Any one else losing the passion?

I have been a Buff fan forever (Eddie was not the coach yet). Many of the players whose names you hear about as old timers I saw many of them play. I was one of the first posters on Buff boards...The Buffs have been one of my biggest passions.

The last 7 to 8 years have been really trying - I have seen the program go through hard times. I have also seen people I know and like be damaged by fan backlash. Now we have a program that many around the country do not think is relevant. I think CU is at a crossroads as a program and I know it is at a crossroads with me.

I use to anxious await gameday and if it was at home we would be packing the vehicles the night before so we could be early to tailgating. I no longer look forward to gameday and we still get there early for tailgating but it is not the same for me. I know the message boards are not as busy as they use to be and different people are sitting around me every week in a premium section - that use to never happen - tells me those people who use to be regulars have dropped their seats.

I told my wife that I was thinking this would be my last year going to CU games...she was shocked but I do not feel like I am part of the program any more. I do not know what the agenda is at CU but if you think it is to win football games and be a major player in college football you are sadly mistaken. And it has little to do with donors stepping - donors have stepped up for years.

I know that Hawkins is going but I would not mind seeing Bohn go also...he is a hollow suit, IMO. CU has gone to style not substance across the board and it is unappealing to me - I hope there are more dramatic changes coming than just changing coaches...maybe that will rekindle my spirits.

I have been a huge Buff fan since I started at CU in the late 80's. I followed every game, when I lived out of state in the early nineties, I used to have family and friends VCR the games on Ch. 4 and mail it to me to watch after the fact. I used to get pretty amped on game day, hate it when I can't go, and would rearrange my schedule, including my kids' stuff to go to the games. I no longer do that. If I can make it, fine. If I can't make it and it's on TV, fine. If I can't make it and it's not on TV, I might listen to the radio and try to catch the highlights.

The absolutely inept hadling of the "scandal", hanging the FB team and GB out to dry, the hiring of D II and his subsequent utter and complete failure to effectively lead the FB program, the arrogant, combative, condescending crap directed at fans and those of us passionate enought to spend time every day discussing our favorite team has just about gotten to be too much for me. I resent the AD's approach to the situation, a completely crappy product, for five years, and then tell us, essentially, shut up, pay premium prices and don't question anything. Frankly, I have just about had enough....

I am right with all three of you. My patience has run out. There better be MAJOR changes in the next four weeks. Problem for me and probably all of you is that I will love the Buffs forever. I can't just rip them out of my very being. However, I am sick of the heartache and excuses.

During the last decade, I've transformed from CU Fan to CU football tourist.

The worst football weekend is still better than most days at work.

I'm relishing the opportunity to take in the sites around the Pac-12.

But watching year after year of low-production offenses is taking it's toll.

CU game day has changed from a celebration to a ritual.

It's been painful to watch CU get left in the dust. While every other conference partner has been actively engaged in an arms race, CU built a medical center.

It's not as fun cheering for a medical center.

I feel alot like that.

yeah, i really thought CU was in a position to seize control of the North in 01-04ish, but since then pretty much every other Big XII team (esp in the North) has improved (minus KU, but they are only 3 years removed from a BCS bowl win and they are, after all KU) and we've done the opposite. in a big way. ISU, shot at bowl eligible. BU, same even likely. MU is a top 15 type program over the last 4-5 years. Tech and Poke State have been in the Holiday or Cotton Bowl. OU and UT=OU and UT. ATM has regressed as well i guess. K State probably treading water.

If we could have a truce just for a minute. Keep your chin up it will get better. You have the excitement of going to the Pac 10 and knowing CU will be back with the next coach. Everyone knows CU is a good program that usually fields a tough hard-nosed team and you are going through one of the worst coaching hires of all time. (NU hired Callahan I know what I am "tawkin" about) ANY coach will be an upgrade when you can Juicebox.

In 2007 NU fans felt like the world was coming to an end and we are headed back up. Since NU and CU are parting ways, I am pulling for you all and hate to see your team this down. (Seriously) It is more fun when CU and NU are both good and our game means something. (Not that I don't think CU will give us a game despite your record come day after Thanksgiving.)

Wish it was the 90's again for the both of us but times change. Coaches change as well keep on fighting and you will be back.

I can't believe I am going to do this...rep.

Seriously, your words are appreciated. I could take the lack of competitiveness better if I didn't feel our AD viewed us mere ticket and gear buying fans (and in my case alumnus) as an annoyance.

EDIT: extra credit for the phrase "can juicebox"...

I am, and always will be, a CU fan. I absolutely love the University of Colorado. I was here long before the current crop of degenerates and incompetents came on board, and I'll be here long after they're gone. I'm one of the constants of CU football. Coaches, players, administrators and officials will come and go, but I'll always be here. I may get pissed off (I've been pissed off a lot lately), but my passion for the University of Colorado will never wane. So long as there is a breath in my body and adequate funds to pay for the tickets & the tailgates, I will be there. I absolutely refuse to allow Dan Hawkins to take that from me. Screw Dan Hawkins. He isn't the boss of me. He can go pound sand for all I care.

I never thought I would have as little passion about CU football than I am now. I havent even considered giving the school any money in two years. Hunting trips, Lake Powell trips, lots of lost Fall Saturdays were put on hold until last year. I spent the last two weekends hunting above Telluride. Ive been on long distance motorcycle trips in the desert. Mountain biking, fishing, finishing projects around the house. I still find myself sneeking peeks at the Buff games on TV, but I watch other teams a lot more frequently than I used to. Its not worth the high blood pressure I get watching something that used to be so great, be so terrible. The cost of keeping dickhole dan an extra year far outweighs the cost of his buyout. I'm not sure that the school will be able to retain my attention, and money, in the near future without a miracle hire, and something to show a commitment to the program. If the admin doesnt care about the program, all the boosters in the world wont make it better.

The good news, though, is tickets to CU are really cheap.
Seats in section 118 (45yrd) are selling for under $100 on stubhub.

Inferior product = bottom basement prices.

Baylor sideline seats are harder to get!

I understand your frustration with the AD. CU has always had issues with the local media and even the University showing their support of the football team. All I can say is that when you head back up you will enjoy it immensly and appreciate it that much more. Thanks for the reps and the extra credit :)

Good luck in the Pac 10 I am looking forward to watching CU in your new conference.

You just need to get the **** rid of Hawkins. He's a horrible coach. Your defense plays with no passion. Your offense is slow and predictable. He still thinks he's at Boise State where every team he played was High School caliber and he could just do QB Draws and slant routes all day and win 40 to nothing. Get rid of that goon.

You'll come back up don't worry. Look at NU and what canning Calla****tits and then hiring a decent coach. Complete turnaround.

Getting rid of Hawkins is only the first step. It's a necessary step, and one I'm sure is coming, but it's the beginning, not the end. Once we fire him, we have to hire somebody competent. Then the real work starts.

This is the first year I missed a home game since 1996 but I have not lost the passion. As soon as the that ****stick Dan Hawkins is gone I will purchase season tickets again.

Broadcast message to UT and NU fans:
The darkest days of Callahan were much, much brighter than 5 LOSING SEASONS IN A ROW under Hawk. CU's blue period is like NU's down years, but with even more futility, less stadium sell-outs, and less offense.

Hey Longhorn fans, boo-hoo. It may look like a down year, but y'all are going to a bowl game and can still get your game televised. After you clock a few losing season, then come back and talk.

Both NU and UT have commitment to winning and would never tolerate FIVE LOSING SEASONS!

When was the last time UT or NU went 2-10 or 3-9? They haven't.

Thanks for the sympathy, but believe me. NU's and UT's darkest years would be celebrated in Boulder, because they didn't generate 2-win and 3-win seasons!

Barf.

Thanks for the encouragement, though.

Great post. It gets so frustrating watching this season knowing it could/should have been avoided by canning Hawk last year. We have been stuck with this hopelessness for 2 whole seasons which feels like a lifetime. All signs point to change at the end of this season, but I will only breath a sigh of relief when I see Hawkins firing made official.

I agree...and no ****ing way do I feel sorry for Texas. They consistently have the #1 recruiting class.....very loyal fan base....oustanding facilities etc etc etc.

If you can't do decent and are on the verge of not even making a bowl game it's a ****ing coaching fail.

It is a depressing time to be a fan. I use to start to get amped the Sunday after a game waiting for the next Saturday to get here. Now, it is not on my radar. I go to all of the home games and enjoy the time with family and the fun of tailgating but the fire of the day is gone.

My wife used to not want to be around me after a loss. I was in a ****ty mood for the entire next week. Now, she knows just asks who are we playing and was it close.

I will always be a fan and know better days are coming. I cannot wait to get the excited feeling back where Saturdays cannot come fast enough. It will happen but it is going to be a process. These last 5 years have take a big chunk out of me.

It's tough when we're losing and when the light at the end of the tunnel is hard to see. I've never had my passion for Colorado football tested as severely as now. As I posted earlier in the week, the Oklahoma game was the first in memory that I did not finish.

Every major college program has its ups and downs. Every major program that is having success in 2010 has had periods of irrelevancy in the last decade or so, some more recently. Colorado was an ELITE football program for nearly a decade, but that span is sandwiched between periods of dry spells.

We simply need to weather the current storm (one more month left) and turn over a new leaf with a new staff and direction. The program is on the upswing with more revenue and excitement as a result of our conference switch, which will lead to better facilities (our main weakness at the moment). The next hire is critical, but I can't help but believe that we're worth at least 3-4 more wins a year simply by virtue of having new blood and enthusiasm in the program. We're going to be back to annual bowling very soon, then on to annual division contention, then on to annual conference contention, then on to national title contention. One more month, then things start to get very positive.

I don't disagree that what you are going through with Hawk is worse than what we went through with Callahan. Had you fired Hawk last year it would not have been nearly as bad. Good news is despite your admin's apparent lack of effort/dedication in fielding a good team, you have everything you need right there in Boulder to get this turned around fast with the right coach. Recruiting should be a snap in Boulder and the fact that Hawkins can't recruit well there is comical (not trying to be mean I just can't believe Hawkins struggles to recruit well to Boulder) Add in the move to the Pac 10 and it will be even easier with a new coach.

CU will be back and you all will be fine but I can understand what you are going through when you feel so helpless. Dan is one of a kind and the problem was made 10 times worse keeping him around for his lame duck year.

I've lost passion for this season. I'm sure I can get it back next season considering I somehow mustered up the passion for this season to begin with. A new coach will do a lot towards getting me rejuvenated towards CU football.

Yes.

I think what pisses me off even more than the losses under Hawkins is the fact we are a very boring team to watch. It would be one thing to watch an exciting team that plays with passion, but just comes up a little short. We're a long ways from there. I used to wake up on Saturdays and be excited to watch the Buffs and at least having some confidence we would win more games than we lose.

Last Saturday I took my wife out to dinner at the Flagstaff house. We talked, we laughed, we enjoyed the view of Boulder at night and generally had a really good time (and ate really well). I didn't even for one second think about the game. We we got home, I turned on the last 1:30 of the CU-OU game, I saw the score, literally said, "meh", to myself and turned the game back off. In the old days, I would have been slightly, just slightly, unhappy that I'd missed the game, and more than slightly upset that CU was losing and losing so badly.

Now? Meh.

The passion is gone. Long gone.

There are some pretty telling comments here. Some people like BlackNGold and myself go back in time. Back in time for me is the 1960s. One of my high school coaches was a former Buff, Jack Price. I started going to Colorado games and loved the Buffs. It was a long way around, but finally became a Buff in the fall of 1971 and graduated in 1972.
It has not been a lot of fun since the 2nd and 9 pass into the tornado force winds at Iowa State in 2005. I'm looking for a reason for Colorado football to be fun again. 27 November is just around the corner.
Finally, no one had better ever question our loyalty to the Colorado football program.

I'm not losing it, it's long gone. And it's not coming back until the administration shows they care about winning football games. If they don't care, why should I?

yes i've lost the passion. i've only watched like 2 buffs games this year. and the ones that were not televised, i wouldn't have watched even if they WERE televised
