CU DEFENSE- What went wrong and why no heat for collins and bandison?

This defense played pretty well the first 5 games and even then not many sacks from the DL.

But the last 3 games the defense has been awful. Our DL is getting no pressure or sacks and we can't stop the run.

CU has 16 sacks this season, Pericak and goree have 1 sack and the freshman diribe has 2 and half sacks. You could put hartigan in there as a de/lb type with 3. That is not cutting it.

I don't know what's going on with herrod but why do our players play well 1 year and the next year they play worse? Players should be improving and getting better not regressing.

Jalil Brown has not played as well and jimmy smith, despite having some decent break-ups and has been solid overall has ZERO PICKS?

It seems the LB position is becoming a non factor with these spread offenses because our lb's aren't making the plays like years past. With Major out, that isn't helping, along with perkins.

I've never liked Collins or Bandison but it looked like things were coming around and now they can't stop anyone. Why can't these coaches develop players from year to year so they IMPROVE?

I'm pretty sure this board's been putting heat on the entire coaching staff for some time now. If you're asking why hawkins hasn't put any heat on them, well, it's likely because hawkins doesn't have a ****ing clue as to what he's doing.

because they are on the field for so much longer??? now that we have a QB that only throws.... we have a lot of 3 and outs....

Regression tends to happen when the other 2 units don't hold up their end of the bargain. We've seen the usual bend don't break approach until it's obvious that the O and ST aren't gonna do anything but sh!t the bed over and over again. The D is just on the field too much.

I think the DL depth is really being exposed (again) as the season wears on.

There was a huge dropoff when perkins went out. He gets everyone lined up. Polk is usually lost, and the true frosh that replaced perk are also lost. Terror smith gets tackles, but hes often totally bewildered. Once perkins went down, the ds cohesion fell apart. Not to mention perkins usually took reallu solid angles. Jered bell really struggled with that. Terror is better, but struggles to make the open field tackle due to his size.

I would agree but we haven't had any injuries to the DL at least that I'm aware of and this unit is a year older, more experienced yet they have played worse.

Same thing happened with hypolite and the other dt from their junior to senior years. We need to get bigger and stronger up front for sure.

Not just 3 and outs either, drives by the offense - when they can actually put them together - that result in no points really deflate a team.

Injuries certainly haven't helped, but prior to the last 3 games I thought the D held up as long as they could. I get the feeling that the D has got to be fed up (along with the rest of us) with the offensive lack of identity, red zone ineptitude, lack of big plays, etc.

I think the D has been more of a victim of the offense and special teams, though they definitely have struggled recently. But when the D has played their asses off the offense hasn't seemed to hold up their end of the bargain. Maybe there's a big divide between the two, don't know if they've got each others backs--and neither can be happy with the kicking debacle.

Check this quote out from Brooks's article after the 1990 CU-NU game:

As sections of oranges were being squeezed over players' heads and randomly thrown, Garten and his offensive teammates chanted "Dee-fense, Dee-fense," while the Buffs defenders answered with chants of "Off-fense, Off-fense."

I'll wager that you won't see this year's squads supporting each other like that.

Dline talent is not nearly as good as we are led to believe. Secondary is a sieve after injuries and our lockdown nfl corners are not lockdown nfl corners. We've been overvaluing our talent on both offense and defense for quite some time.

Jimmy has not looked bad. He got beat on that one weird fate route where his legs got tangled, but overall hes been a special teams phenom and a solid corner. His problem is that the coaches have not matched him up against the other team's best WR. So the other teams just put the other WR on the opposite side of the field from him all day. Hence you get AJ Green and Ryan Broyle's production. Stupid stupid coaching.

Yeah, hawk's explanation of why jonathan hawkins was on broyles was as puzzling as his 5 years here. Jalil has been burned a ton but you would think 2 nfl corners would have more than 3 picks, especially when 1 of them jimmy smith has none.

As Snow said, losing Perkins really hurt. It's not the whole reason, but we fans have never valued him enough. He's a damn good football player and was the quarterback of our defense.

We've also been playing some really good offenses.

But what gets me is that our DL isn't holding up like it was early in the year. Bandison is worthless. I wonder what the story is with Herrod?

At OU the D was left high and dry. ****ty punting and 3 and outs led to it finally breaking. I don't blame them. It's tough when your offense can't move the chains. We do need more sacks, but the fact is we aren't putting 4 DLs on the line. We are using some weird 3-4 defense with a LB at DE. Sorry, that doesn't cut it. Guys like Herrod and Kasa and others should be in every freaking play. We *never* run stunts so the OL C has an easy time calling out the assignments.

Frankly, our schemes suck. We can't disguise blitzes for **** and our blitz packages are absolutely sophomoric.

Jimmy's been thrown at in man coverage all of what, 3 times? 70% of the passing yards against us have come on ****ing screen passes against our soft zone that we've played. We don't let our safeties or nickles go man against anyone, and the last few teams we have played have always gone 3 or 4 wide. So guess what? Jimmy never goes one on one against anyone unless its with his back to the endzone. Kind of hard to pick a pass off when you are 10 yards off in a deep zone and the othe rteam is throwing behind the line of scrimmage. How many passes towards jimmy was there in the baylor and TT games combined. past the line of scrimmage. 2? 3? GL picking a lot of passes off when the other team can just go deep on your 3d string nickleback against their best wideout.

My favorite part of the OU game: They didn't have to run the ball to set up the pass. They used the pass to set up the pass. ****ing WR screens for 8 yards burn the **** out of you. OU must have watched CSU's O from last year...or the last ****ing 5 years.

We've seen this in past years. D plays reasonably well at the beginning of the year, not spectacular but solid. Over the course of the season, especially as the B12 schedule starts, the D simply wears down in the face of a season of watching the O go three and out, and the ST lose the filed position over and over.

The injuries add to the problem. I don't think any of the D coaches, aside from oerhaps Cabral, maybe Ambrose are worth looking at for the new (hopefully) staff.

To defend Jimmy Smith some more, I can't count how many times he's made TD saving tackles by running across the entire field to catch WRs and RBs. Take Hawaii for example, he makes a TD saving tackle, the D ends up holding, and Hawaii never breaks the game open before our offense gets it going. I think SnowBuff has nailed the DBs' issues completely. They're playing soft zones and half of them are getting their first playing time.

I think Jimmy Smith and Jalil have done a good job. We have zero pass rush. They can't cover guys forever.

It would be pretty depressing to play defense knowing your offense can't do anything but pass the ball two yards and go three and out. I don't have any love for Bandison and Collins, but to me our defense is one of the few bright spots on this team.

The screens are killing us because we're constantly playing man coverage, not zone, so we can blitz to try to get QB pressure.

Because the LB and/or safety, who would normally be covering, is blitzing.

I'm gonna disagree with ya, but thats usual around here. Even if you are blitzing, you don't leave uncovered WR's on the outside in man to man.

Am I the only one that thinks our defense this year doesn't even closely resemble our defense of last year? (Post Toledo)

Last year we played so much more risky stuff, cover zero etc. Much more up in the face of offenses. This year we put our corners 15 yards off the line on a 3rd and 8 and wonder how they convert. I guess since we've been hit hard by injuries the staff might have to do this, but we were doing it early in the season too.

We dont have the horses to run cover zero, we havent since Hawk got here. Remember the 58-0 beat down to Missouri? We ran much cover zero and paid for it. Im not disagreeing with you, just we dont have the talent.

I don't disagree that cover zero is way too risky for what we do, but I'm saying I thought I remember us doing a lot of it last year. I guess I'm saying the idea that Brown was the real DC post Toledo seems to be a possibility to me.

The D has not been great but the offense has been offensive and the special teams are dismal. We constantly put the D in a horrible spot with double digit 3 and outs and even worse special teams. The D could be better but they are not getting any help from the other 2 phases of the game at all.
