We are in trouble now

I am now 100% convinced Mike Bohn dragging his feet WILL cost this program in the long run more than it already has. I no longer believe CU can attract a coach with any potential of being a HC at any other BCS school. After several weeks of national embarrassment, coupled with years of lackluster play have completely dropped us off the map. I know this cause I moved to NC last year and NO ONE IN THIS STATE EVEN KNOWS WHO CU IS ANYMORE! No coach with any serious potential will be coming to CU to get his name and career destroyed. IF Bohn would have fired Talkins earlier it MAY have shown we have some dedication to winning and developing a winning program. Now we just look like a bunch of gutless has beens with no desire to put fourth a winning team. Now lets look at the evidence....

Guz Malzahn- was one of the leading candidates for the job months ago. He was by all accounts interested in the position. After the past few weeks sources have indicated he is no longer interested in CU. Although we do not know for sure if he lost interest or if Bohn is no longer interested in him, I am guessing it is not Bohn not wanting him!

Les Miles- Ex CU guy who would love to get out of the pressure cooker at LSU. However, in the past 3 weeks we have literally destroyed any remnant of our national image and the mad hatter has solidified his place in LSU with a few big wins. The only chance we had to get him was pursue him before the season.... but instead we stuck with Hawk and his band of losers

Mike Belotti- We may have been able to get him. He has said is is interested in coming back if he situation is right. Before this season the conditions may have been right. HOWEVER, last week he was quoted as saying he doesn't know much about CU except for the embarrassment we had on national TV. That sure doesn't make him think this is a good situation. We embarrassed ourselves one too many times for Belotti to be interested..... again thanks Mr. Bohn for the Hawkins firing delay!!

Jim McElwain- Not much has been said about him lately. But again I cannot imagine he is interested in coming into this mess when he can probably become HC at any number of schools after this year.

WHO CAN WE STILL GET?

1) Mac- probably our best choice. He exemplifies what CU should be, but at 70 not sure he will be able to give the time to turn this thing around.

2) Calhoun- He loves colorado and this would be a nice step up for him, but AFA is not likely to easily part with him

3) Eric Bienemy- No HC experience but looks like at this point we may just have to deal with that.

BOTTOM LINE- if Bohn would have acted quickly (aka last year or at minimum after the embarrassing OU loss) we may have been able to pull of a major coaching hire. We would have at least shown the world we are not interested in mediocre teams and it is not acceptable to lose. Now we have shown the world we are no longer committed to winning and we don't care about athletics. I don't see anyone big risking their career to come to CU now. That is my opinion at least.... interested if you all agree with me.

Or possibly our Athletic Director has a plan in place, and wants all the details confirmed before he makes his announcments. Kind of like he did with the conference alliance shift.

I'm not in a position to know one way or another, and can only hope that the OP is false.

Someone wake me up when this nightmare is over.

We have an AD?

The whole point was that he has waited too long..... every big name that has come up can now pretty much be thrown away except mac.... If this is all a clever trick by Bohn I say F**K YOU BOHN- we are all trying to support this team but for God's sake get rid of Hawk. You are costing us so much by not just doing it. We have lost all national respect and CU has lost a ton of fan support. The longer he waits the more shi*t he brings on this University and football program.

Believe it or not, I got your point the first time.

My point is, that unless you have credible inside information, you don't really know if the delay is costing us at all. I understand your argument, but without a broader picture, it's difficult to understand how all of the pieces fit.

I dont know if it will cost us, but the delay has turned this whole thing into one big nasty story.... another one to tack onto CU's history of such blemishes

The coaching fraternity is pretty tight. They do not necessarily view things in the same manner as fans do. While what you say may have some merit, there are still only a certain number of BCS jobs that will be available after this season. There are only so many chances you get at BCS coaching jobs.

The one thing I'm hoping/praying for is that the coaching candidate options are still really murky right now, and a ton can change in the next month. Guys like Les Miles are still in the realm of possibility(he still has a tough road game at Arkansas), stranger things have happened. I think maybe, just maybe he his holding his cards close to his chest so that while Hawk is still drawing all of the heat, Bohn is not drawing heat on who he is interviewing and dealing with pressure as a coaching search drags on. This is again my prayer and if true, I hope his patience pays off, as I am 100% with everybody here that this nightmare needs to end.

No offense, but your post just doesn't make sense to me. Firing the coach a week ago, this week or in three weeks makes no difference in the coaching search. Sure, Hawkins is an annoying prick and I'd love to see his arrogant mouth stuffed with a pink slip, but...

1. An employed coach can't start until after the season is over.
2. By not announcing now, shows the AD is not just considering Mac or someone like Dave Logan, who are available immediately. I would think this would please everyone that the AD is doing a wide ranging search.
3. Not firing Hawk now, actually shows the AD to have some class, which will help attract a new coach.
4. Not firing Hawk now, let's him hang himself even more, making him even more unemployable later ( for those of you who truly hate the man)
5. Jumping on Mike Bohn makes no sense, since it's been widely reported that he would have fired Hawk last year if not for being overruled due to budget issues.
6. While not an ideal situation, we have a small recruiting class to fill this year so a good coach does have a chance to fill it out even on limited time.
7. The AD may be discussing a reduced buyout now (unlikely, but you never know)

Point is, none of us knows what's going on behind the scenes, but I seriously doubt mike is scared of firing Dan Hawkins. The dude fired a hard ass like Barnett, you think he's scarred of a pussy like Hawk?

Agree with all of the above. Today, last week or after NU does not matter. It will have not one negative impact on the coaching search. The AD being an ass may keep some folks from considering us but where we are today is not going to impact it at all. All parties involved and the potential candidates know Hawk is leaving and that is all that really matters right now.

I say again, if everyone knows he's gone, what's the big deal in ****ing saying it? Can our AD not come out and say Dan will not be returning as head coach but will finish out the season? Why is that asking too much? I hope fans turn their back on Hawk and Bohn.

Well there are some interesting points here. But I think my biggest issue is that by not firing Hawk we are showing a commitment to losing. You may not see this but I am telling you from my perspective living on the east coast this is the truth. People out here literally think CU football is a joke. They laugh EVERY WEEK at us not getting rid of Hawk. So while you and I may know that Hawk is a gone soon, the rest of the country does not. And every time we are on sportscenter for a record come from behind loss, having another giant letdown on national TV etc hurts our image.... and you are joking yourself if you think recruits and potential coaches don't see that. No coach will risk his career to come to someplace if they are getting one embarrassing story after another coming from this place. The longer Hawk is here and the more embarassing losses he piles up, the less likely we are to get a quality coach and the less likely we are to be able to maintain any recruiting this year.

So I agree in reality firing Hawk mid season does not change anything occurring right now. It will not save a season etc. But the longer he is here the more negative publicity we get and the harder it will become to get recruits and a quality coach to Boulder. No one on the east coast thinks CU football will ever be relevant again.... and these national TV blowouts and epic come from behind losses do nothing to help us. We need to get rid of Hawk to salvage something from this mess.

John henderson in the post says malzahn no longer on colorados list of coaches and belloti doesnt want to be here and les miles aint going anywhere either not after beating bama. the longer you wait then the list of good coaches gets shorter.

I'm in complete agreement in this regard. As a fan, I want the AD to come out and say, "we can no longer tolerate this culture of losing, and to demonstrate our committment to our future we are firing Coach Hawkins and replacing him with an interim coach..."

But my point remains valid.

At the end of the season, perhaps Mike Bohn will make an announcement that demonstrates CU is absolutely committed to winning. It would make the four weeks between now and then seem irrelevant. You don't know. I don't know.

Furthermore, who the **** cares if people on the east coast are literally laughing at our program. Okay, I care because it stings my pride a little, but your OP was about the delay in firing Coach Hawkins affecting our ability to attract a quality coach. Bad publicity on ESPN or people laughing at our program have NO effect on that.

Something we are also showing to potential coaches is that CU is loyal to its Head Coach and will give him time to build the program. That's huge, actually. Knowing that you have a reasonable 4 or 5 years to turn things around at CU versus the 2 or 3 you would get other places will be very attractive to job candidates. It's a great place to live, a BCS program, top 20 in all-time wins, proven to be able to bring in top 20 recruiting classes several times in the past decade, a conference title in that same time frame, and a national championship winner in the past 20 years. There is no shortage of coaches who would absolutely love the CU job.

So Dave Logan, right?

Again though, I'm not completely discounting your opinion, but you are mostly talking about fan opinions here. The coaching ranks tend to view things in a completely different way. As I said, there are only so many BCS coaching jobs to go around. If you are an and up coming assistant, there are only so many opportunities that are going to arise before the next hot assistant jumps over you. It is rare for the truly plum jobs of college football to come open, so if a popular coordinator waits around for one of those jobs, they are taking a big risk.

I'm not saying the current situation is helping us in being more attractive to HC candidates, but I am not sure I buy that suddenly no quality candidates will want the job as a result of Bohn not pulling the trigger.

I think good coaches would look at CU, freshly moving to Cali and the recruting hotbeds there, and the situation now and think 'Hot dman-- even if I have 7 win seasons they will still love me! No downside!'

We can make up all the reasons in the world, but bring Mac here and Cu will come back strong. Bring Miles and recruits will falling all over themselves to play for him. Stop sweating it.

The Church of Dave Logan(TM) isn't recognized by any authorities. Actually, it's just a small shrine that used to be my garage.

If this man is a God, then DBT has to be some sort of prophet or something, right?

No doubt! That photo looks so dated, that he could mistaken for DBT's great-great-great grandson!

Mostly I was referring to the wardrobe, but you bring up a great point. DBT is really, really old.

But you can't tell me it doesn't have a huge effect on recruiting.

But you can't tell me it doesn't have a huge effect on recruiting.

Sure I can. If you announce that Hawk is fired now--effective immediately or at the end of the season--how does that assist recruiting? It's not until we name our next HC that recruiting becomes relevent. Some kid laughing at CU now, won't be laughing if we name a homerun coach. If our next coach isn't a good recruiter than we're screwed anyway. In fact we're just screwed this year for recruiting, so it doesn't matter one way or the other.

So I can tell you that it doesn't have a huge effect. There you go.

So, I guess we'll call not doing anything the "Walrus way" here at allbuffs?......

So, I guess we'll call not doing anything the "Walrus way" here at allbuffs?......

I'd appreciate it if you'd put a (TM) trademark after that.

Truthfully, I'd be very satisfied with an announcment of termination. I simply acknowledge that there may be other forces in play that will ultimately be very satsifying to the fanbase, but nonetheless require some patience.
