The theme in yesterday's presser from Mike Bohn was that CU needs $$$ and availability of funds will dictate who's the next coach.

With this in mind we need to eliminate some names from the 'pool' of candidates.

no Gruden, no Bellotti, no Les Miles

next we need to eliminate Leach as he's too crazy for Boulder...

so who does that leave ??

McCartney
Bieniemy
Calhoun
McElwain
Logan

McCartney - Old
Bieniemy - No HC experience
Calhoun - ?? on BCS qualifications
McElwain -
Logan - NO - Oh my Lord in Heaven, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Everyone on most of the "lists" (excepting Logan from this) each have good qualities and some sort of baggage. Right now, I just don't see any name that jumps out as "the one".

I am leaning towards Calhoun at the moment, i want to see EB back but he will need strong OC and DC who has had HC experience

Knowing his job is riding on this hire, I think Bohn is going to spend more than most people think. He may even spend more than the AD can really afford. If he gets the right guy and we start winning it should pay off in the form of attendance, donations, TV appearances, etc. Combined with Pac 12 revenue, it should pay off. If the next guy stinks, Bohn will be fired and the fact that he's put the AD in a financial hole by overspending on the HC will be the next guy's problem. It's hail mary time and I think we're going over $2M with this hire.

You gotta spend money to make money. I think that should be the philosophy for this hire. Get a guy who can win like Malzon or Miles, you're going to make a butt load of money if your team is on national TV, ranked, and winning there but if you hire a guy like Logan who I doubt can win, you a taking a chance to lose a large chunk of money. Just my $0.02.

If someone from "inside the family" doesn't get the job, I'm in the camp of Veneables right now. He currently makes 440K so we should be able to upgrade his salary and Stoops isn't going anywhere soon.

Has anybody done research on Dave Doeren?

wasn't some group of boosters supposed to donate $50 million last year? we could hire a pretty good coach for $50 million

Given Veneables' KSU ties and CU moving to a different conference, this might not sound so bad after all.

i think the more heat Bohn feels, the more it aids a McCartney hire. hiring Mac buffers Bohn from criticism with the donors/boosters/fans. if he goes out on his own and lays another egg. he's gonzo.

I'm thinking the most CU pays will be along the lines of $1,750,000 -
that figure would put the new coach in the top 5 or 6 in the Pac 12

Veneables scares the hell out of me. If he was all that and a bag of chips he would have been a HC by now.

not me. BV's defenses have played uninspired and unemotional as of late. Sound familiar?

......and Stoops isn't going anywhere soon.

He's gettin' some heat right now, particularly regarding their road woes. Hmmmm, Bobby S as a candidate?
Has anybody done research on Dave Doeren?

No, can you fill us in?

RedDirtBuff,

I had the strangest feeling about Bob Stoops coming to CU. I know he is very sensitive about his children just like Miles is sensitive about his family.

he is my #1 candidate. Has improved the Wisconsin defense every year he has been there, is a good recruiter and if we don't get him this year some other school will get him in the next year or two.

RedDirtBuff,

He's been getting blasted by the media recently. Everything from the night-and-day look of the team on the road vs home games, in-game decisions (fake field goal last week and the 2-pt try at mizzery), preparation against seemingly inferior teams (see also Utah St). The natives are getting a bit restless.

I dunno, Nash. I'm not sure CU could afford him, but if that $ wasn't an issue.......

Oh, and he seemed very much in favor of the P10 move when it looked like the B12 might break in half. So, who knows?

Tante -- I really like the idea of a DC as next HC. 2 great examples; Mac and Stoops. They just seem to have their priorities and emphasis in place. OC's seem to be hit or miss.

Stewart Mandel on SI.com put in his two cents worth this morning. He ripped the idea of Mac, based mainly on how long he has been out of coaching. Mandel supports the "hot coordinator" theory especially Malzahn the OC from Auburn but he also mentions Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables or Utah offensive coordinator Dave Schramm as known great recruiters. This is similar to the point Woelk makes this morning about not needing a CU guy. At least we are getting national press for a second.

Hell I would just like the guys that promised to buy out Hawk's contract if CU fired him to step up. Where do those guys hide when this stuff goes down?
