My Hawkish Concession Speech

Q: "Were you surprised by the firing of Dan Hawkins?"

A: "“When you have those questions ... like last week when asked, 'Did it surprise you that your team got crushed by Oklahoma?' No, it didn't surprise me. You look around and you say "He seems like a nice enough guy" and you look at the win-loss record and you go "Wow he lost 39 games in 4 1/2 years." Then you look at the Kansas game and you go "That's bad" and then you realize that you lost count of how many times we've had a delay of game after a timeout. There's a certain energy that comes with having a coach that should have been fired at least a year ago that kind of saps a program, and you have to kind of battle that energy until it flows your way."

Q: "So it appears that the come-from-ahead loss to Kansas was the final straw?"

A: "Yeah, that's the way it plays out sometimes, you have a bad month and lose 70-3 and fire a coach in 2005, but then you look at it another way and suffer through 5 years of mediocrity culminating in an impossible blown lead and finally take the horse out to pasture to put him down. So you see it both ways. But there's an opportunity to finally go, "Ok, I can wake up from that bad dream now." You better flush it."

Q: "What did you take from his last press conference?"

A: "Mostly the sense of relief I guess in terms of putting a helpless, suffering animal out of its misery in a public and humane way. You look at Dan's face and you look at Cody's face and you go, "Why are these guys laughing and smiling on a day when Hawk's been terminated?" and then you realize that these guys know they got paid handsomely and failed at a job that they were never qualified to do, something that most of us, and most of you never get to do. So there's always some of that. So it's been awesome for Hawk. At the same time Christopher Columbus set sail once and people thought he was crazy. Sometimes in your life you have to be able to do that a little bit, and that's what Hawk'll do. That's Hawk's deal. Do your deal."

Q: "What will you take away from the Dan Hawkins era?"

A: "It's not the one or two highlights, like beating CSU, Nebraska and Oklahoma in 2007, or the close calls, like almost beating Nebraska or Okie State or whoever, or the innumerable really bad losses like Montana State or Toledo or Kansas last week. Just the feeling that you get on gameday, you look around at a great group of guys and you go, "Play for the uniform" and by the third or fourth play nobody is playing for anything and the team looks like someone in a streetfight who has never been in a streetfight before and you know how it's going to end. Just the tremendous realization that there are so many other things in life that are important that have been stressed to our kids over blocking and tackling and winning football games. In the end they were kind of cute and liked to run around, but they chewed things up and peed on the rug."

Note: this is (predictably) my last Hawk-umentary. Part I and Part II.

Nice I like it. Glad we don't have to listen to Hawk's post-game comments anymore.

Absolutely classic!
