Woelk: Next coach doesn't have to be from family

The only requirement for the next coach should be that he is the best possible candidate (and one that CU can afford).

The two best coaches in Colorado history were Crowder and McCartney. Crowder came to CU from Bud Wilkinson`s Oklahoma staff (where Crowder also played).

McCartney was a Michigan guy. The only ties either had to CU were that both played against the Buffs in their college days.

I think that is a good idea to look at coaches in that light.

100% agree, there are more examples than I could list here regarding "outsiders" becoming legends at their respective schools.

Completely agree. What is this "family" stuff anyways. We are not Notre Dumb. I doubt many other schools do this. Why limit our pool by requiring former CU experience?

Woelk making sense? I am surprised, but he is very right on this.

My stance remains and that is to hire an OUTSIDER.

We are going to a DIFFERENT conference and I believe the road to the Pac-12 championship will be DIFFERENT from what the road to the Big 8 and Big 12 championships.

The new coach doesn't need to have head coaching exprience (Barnett was an exception) but coordinator exprience and exprience within a BCS conference.

That means no Leach (who I support as the next CU coach), no McCartney, no Gruden, no Calhuon, and no Miles. That does favor McElwain, Malzahn, and any other BCS coordinator who could be interested in the job.

Sounds like McElwain could end up being the obvious choice.

NW is a joke. Credibility is like virginity, once you lose it, it is gone. NW has so shamelessly shilled for the AD party line, it's hard to take anything he says as the product of real journalism. What he is good for, is to know what ideas MB is trying to float as trial balloons.

I thought it was interesting when he mentioned certain talk show hosts might be pursuing their own agenda. Was he referring to Klatt, Alfred, Logan??

why i'd be concerned by this article if i were in the big bring back Mac camp. i'm not, however, and tend to agree with not being married to the past or the nostalgia of another Mac tenure.

so it sounds like Bohn told Woelk to 'soften the blow' for fans who are wanting Mac or EB... damn

I agree, MB is laying the groundwork to go his own way on the HC decision...at least if Dr. Phil and Bruce allow him to take the training wheels off his AD desk.

I think Mac is the best choice known to us right now. I could get behind an Al Golden staff or some of the other candidates. Ultimately, I'll suppport whoever gets the job. Some choices will be more exciting than others, some will be downright disappointing (i.e. Venables or Calhoun).

this does bring up something I've been thinking the past few days. As Klatt & CJ & Al start banging the drum louder and louder that ONLY a CU guy can be the choice, what's gonna happen with the fan/alumni/ex-player base if it's not? Do we splinter (again)? Do we withhold support? Do the radio guys start trashing CU/Bohn for the choice?

I hope we can all get on board with any choice (except Logan) and really get behind the program. At the moment though, I'm worried that isn't gonna be possible.

That is exactly why I can't really see this going any other way. There is going to be such an uproar if it isn't Mac that as soon as new Head Coach X has his first stumble (Losing to CSU next year?) Bohn's ass will be on the street.

I understand why Mac wouldn't be high on his list given he is likely to lose a lot of power over the program by bringing in the Patriarch of Colorado football but I really don't see where he has a choice.

Should we as a fans of a program be basically forced into a direction by a couple of ex-players that happen to have control of the CU-based airwaves? I know they want the best for the program, have given their blood/sweat/tears to the program, have helped to make the program great, and on and on..., but I don't think I like how this is starting to play out with what they're advocating (only candidates with CU ties should be considered).

I see your point here too but aren't those ex-players from the time when CU was successful in football? It's not like having to listen to a Cody Hawkins on the radio whle not winning during his days at CU.

Interestingly enough, CJ and Klatt are discussing right now who the who the top non-CU tied candidate should be.

This. While Woelk makes sense it lends me to believe that this was leaked to Woelk from Bohn to put this out there. All of the ex-Buffs on the radio are clamoring for Mac and EB. Bohn doesn't want to be pushed into a corner making this decision. This is all about Woelk looking after Bohn so he can continue to get good "scoops" from the AD. Nothing more.

I have a tough time believing Bohn wants to hire Mac. He has to walk a fine line though because Mac is royalty at the program.

Klatt no likey. "Get him on the phone!"

yeah haha, i was going to post that..

Klatt rips Mackovic because he didn't embrace the past and Mack Brown did bring back Darrell Royal and embraced the history of Texas football but does Klatt understand that Mack Brown wasn't from the Texas family? Who's to say that Brady Hoke won't embrace CU history just like Mack?

While I agree with the tone of the column, I can't help but go back to the thought that Woelk has become a mouthpiece for the AD. As such, I can't entirely trust the motivation for the column. I think it's a plant. Bohn is floating another trial balloon to see what folks reaction will be to NOT hiring McCartney. He probably already has a pretty good idea of what most people's reaction would be if he did hire him. Now he's trying to figure out what, if any, negative reaction would come from going in a different direction.

This guys are winners and have earned the right to make their claims for who they think will be most successful as our next HC. I just don't want them to foster an atmosphere of anger if the choice isn't an ex-CU guy

I don't think there's much of a chance of that happening. They're both Buffs. They'll support whoever is hired, just like the rest of us will (assuming it's not Logan) until it's time to stop supporting him.

I'm hoping they would get behind the next HC, no matter who that is. And it was during the past week when that's all I heard from them that I began to worry. However, listening to CJ & Klatt on the radio today is making me think that they want a CU guy but won't slam the decision if it's not, and either way will support the hire.

Mack wasn't even neutral, he had been the OC for Barry Switzer at OU in the early 80's. and his brother Watson was OC at OU for Gibbs. My step-dad (OU guy) claims Mack would have been the OU coach but for Watson Brown wanting to replace Gibbs. Mack stepped aside for his brother.

The idea that we need to hire someone from the CU family is not only over-rated, but more importantly it limits us in getting the best possible coach for CU. EB and Embree are getting too much play as the next potential coach and they're only getting consideration because they both went to CU.

Pete Carroll didn't know **** about SC and look what he did....he went in and became the biggest Trojan EVAR! And now he's at Seattle being the biggest Seahawk EVAR! You really limit yourself if you look only internally....although there are very good, qualified up and coming former Buffs that are now in the coaching world...I could name one...that would love an opportunity to go back to CU as a position coach...he's fiery and he's good at what he does.
