I AM GOING TO STATE THIS UPFRONT, EB MAY BE A GREAT COACH AND THE NEXT HEAD COACH AT CU; A COACH I WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY WITH. I AM NOT AN EB HATER.
I have heard all of the rumors about EB over the years but started doing some investigating and here is what I have found.
a rick reilly (i know, take it with a grain of salt) SI article from 1989, titled "WHAT PRICE GLORY?" Pretty damning towards the culture around Mac’s program.

EB portion
Kanavis McGhee, Colorado's 6 ft. 5 in., 230-pound sophomore linebacker, and Eric Bieniemy, also a sophomore and the Buffaloes' leading rusher last season, were arrested in a bar fight in February 1988, after McGhee sent a 5 ft. 7 in., 158-pound bouncer, Roger Hogoboom, to the hospital with a fractured cheekbone and cuts that required plastic surgery. McGhee said he was angry that Bieniemy had been called a "little ******" by a bar patron. Hogoboom was injured when he tried to separate the combatants. Both pleaded no contest -- McGhee to a charge of second-degree assault, and Bieniemy to charges of disorderly conduct and fighting in public. They received deferred sentences and were ordered to perform community service. They were also subjected to unspecified disciplinary action by McCartney.
An April 2004 article in the Daily Bruin -
This goes into several negative and positive EB aspects, worth the read.

Here is a list of things I have been able to find out on EB
- was arrested in feb of 1988 for a bar fight
- 1990 arrest after a skirmish with the aurora fire department at his parents home (bs by all accounts, he was sticking up for his parents when the fire dept wanted to knock holes in the wall) ultimately suspended for the first game of the 1990 season, the Disneyland Pigskin Classic game against Tennessee in Anaheim
- 1991 charged with speeding and driving with a suspended license
- 1994 allegedly choked a female parking attendant at a Colorado football game and was subsequently banned from the university for a disputed length of time
- DUI in April 2001
- Marcus Houston transferred primarily because of issues with EB
- UCLA running backs Tyler Ebell and Wendell Mathis both transferred after not getting along with EB
- EB is going to be a love him or hate him coach from a players perspective
