MIKE BOHN: Buffnation deserves a better coach than Logan or Calhoun

I can't think of a single good reason why this would be in the recruiting forum.

*moved*

I really don't think Logan is on anyone's radar as a HC. He may try for it, but I doubt will be taken seriously

If Logan wants the job so bad, why is he afraid to work his way up to it like everybody else? A HS coach who has this "all or nothing" attitude towards the Buffs is absolutely insane to me.

Heartily agree with the previous two posts.

EDIT: Has Logan actively pursued the HC position? I don't listen to KOA except for games that aren't televised.

Didn't Calhoun turn Tennessee down last year? And didn't most of us think he'd do well there if he had accepted? Why aren't we as high on Calhoun for the CU job?

Has Calhoun ever won his conference? Has he ever finished in the top 2 of his conference?

Calhoun had a pretty decent rookie debut - but since then, what has he done? He beat Notre Dame his rookie year, but he's never won a game against a team from a BCS conference.

I guess if your opponents are going to be CSU, Southern Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, Army, and UNLV - he's a great coach. Otherwise, he's never really done anything.

Take a deep breath and think for a moment how hard it is to win at Air Force. Calhoun should be in our top 5.

You're right.

Calhoun never has to worry about players being academically ineligible.
Calhoun never has to worry about his players getting in trouble with the law.
Calhoun never has to worry about his players transferring to other schools, or getting home sick, etc.
Calhoun never has to play any BCS teams.

It must be TERRIBLY hard to win at Air Force. Certainly much much much much MUCH harder than coaching at Colorado.

Slade's just pissed that Air Force almost won in Norman this year.

I guess a better question would be, if he is such a catch or hot commodity, why is he at Air Force? I'm sure he is a good game day coach, but we also need a great recruiter....lets not forget, it all starts with recruiting. You can coach the hell out of scrubs and still lose.

he turned DOWN tennessee last year.

There was a lot of speculation that Calhoun was taking the Tennessee job. He then met with his team. Later that day, he released a statement that he was staying at Air Force.

Going back to 2009, Tennessee interviewed Calhoun and he ended up being their 2nd choice behind Kiffin. It was probably his job if he wanted it in 2010.

Um, yeah. Name another school where all the kids are walk ons chosen by someone other than the coach?

AFA has high academic standards, and unlike most schools, no "easy" majors. And football players don't get a free pass.

Perhaps you've forgotten a little rape scandal at the AFA? No players involved, but it's not impossible for cadets to get into trouble.

I was watching the aTm/Baylor game for a while earlier. They were talking about the aTm MLB being an AFA transfer. Last week against Army, one of the Army players was a former AFA cadet. In fact, plenty of cadets decide after the first couple years that Academy life isn't for them.

And while Calhoun may not have to play any BCS teams (I guess your Sooners dropped down to FCS?) they have faced a top 5 BCS team each of the last two years. CU has not.

Most games, AFA is at a size/athletic advantage against anybody they play. That's not recruiting, that's the nature of the beast at the academy. Kids who want to play in the NFL aren't going to give you the time of day in recruiting. Kids who don't meet the academic standards don't get in. But yeah, what could be hard about that???

That is incorrect. The service academies recruit just the same as other NCAA schools do. Coaches still have in-home visits, go to high schools, etc. They just have more stringent academic / admission requirements.

Can't wait to watch Troy Calhoun be a head coach at a BCS conference school. I enjoy watching coaches learn on the job, it usually goes pretty well.

You're right BB. Calhoun needs to go be a RB coach until he's ready for a BCS level HC job...

But yeah, what could be hard about that???

There's nothing hard about playing a bunch of scrub WAC / MWC teams - that's one of the reasons why Calhoun's record is as good as it is. All this hard-on for a coach who hasn't ever even finished 2nd in his own conference boggles my mind.

Maybe CU should go after George O'Leary from UCF. He is leading his division in Conference USA and he has BCS head coaching experience. Or maybe the head coach at Temple - they are currently leading their division in the MAC. Hawaii's is currently 2nd in it's conference - maybe CU should go after their head coach?

There are plenty of really good coaches out there. No reason to settle for a guy who isn't a proven winner just because he's coaching at Air Farce.

It's always best to consider travel costs when conducting a coaching search. Luckily, all Bohn has to do is hop on 36 until it reaches I-25, and then it is straight shot down to the Springs. Less than a tank of gas and we have our coach.

What does the WAC have to do with anything? Calhoun doesn't coach in the WAC. Never has. He has, however, finished second in the MWC. His first year, 2008. They went 9-3 (6-2 in conference) and finished a game ahead of Utah. The 3 years before he took over they were 5-6, 4-7 and 4-8 and hadn't been over .500 in conference since 2002 (easy as pie to win there, you know). The years you talk about them finishing 4th, you could also point out that the top 3 teams finished ranked in the top 25 each year.

He has also coached in the NFL. He's even been a coordinator - 2 different colleges and in the NFL. And a HC. Lots of names on the list with less on their resume'.

And I'm really not sure what you're talking about when you talk about people having a hard on for him?? There's as much support for bringing back Hawk as you can find for Calhoun around here most days. Calhoun definitely isn't my first choice, but it absolutely blows me away that people are creaming themselves over a RB coach but somehow act like a guy who has brought about vast improvement in a service academy team, dealing with all the restrictions incumbent in that job, is Forrest ****ing Gump....

Oh, btw, the HC at Temple might very well be coaching @ Penn State very soon. But he's at Temple, so I guess they'd be stupid to hire him, right???

I'll take our I-25 hires under Bohn over our national searches. Going national happened with 2 hires and yielded Kathy McConnell-Miller plus Dan Hawkins.

A national search of a former Buff and the HC at Boise State is another way to cut down on travel costs. Most schools interpret "national" to mean across the country. But luckily, we think of it a bit differently at CU.

P.S.-We are ****ed if Air Force ever decides to drop sports.

Yep. Because the 2 interviews that were reported must be the only 2 candidates who were looked at or spoken to.
