Buffs vs Idaho State

88-80 Win. Thought it was a pretty sloppy performance, and surprisingly undisciplined on the offensive end. Somewhat expected with a new coach/system I guess. Thoughts?

Here's my quick analysis:

We seemed to have dead legs tonight. Team needs to get into shape.

We can't defend the post. This isn't likely to change this year.

Nate is not capable of playing man defense on Big 12 level point guards. Shannon needs to get back to form and find a jump shot so he can take over or our defense is really going to suffer. Without Shane, we don't have a last line of defense anyone needs to worry about. Plus, the energy level of the whole team seems to go way up when Shannon enters the game. I do like the way Nate runs the offense and the way his jump shot is a weapon from deep, though. Had some nice assists tonight, too.

Levi's hustle and efficient play were HUGE tonight. He's such a valuable guy. Can't say enough about him. Seems like the kind of guy who will be a really great coach some day if he wants to go that direction in his life.

Austin had a decent first game, especially in the 2nd half. We need him to play well to give us something on our defensive interior. Also, when he is shooting well and finishing around the basket, it keeps the opposing team's big from collapsing and helping on Alec and Cory. That's huge for us.

Marcus still gets out of control at times, but he's a great option as a 3rd scorer. Potential to explode for 20+ on any given night. Just got to play within the system and he'll be great. Very few 3s or 4s who guard him can stay with him off the dribble. He creates major matchup problems.

Andre was a major late pickup for the Buffs. 11 rebounds in 21 minutes. He's just going to get better. I love this kid.

Mills is a scrapper and has some offensive skill. He needs to gain 40 pounds. Gonna be hard for him to compete in the Big 12 this year, but looking a couple years ahead in the crystal ball we're going to like our front line with Shane, Mills and Cain.

Cory and Alec were off tonight and still got their points. Love the consistency we get with them. I think Alec may have gotten a bit taller and he has definitely gained some muscle (still skinny, though). Each had a roof raising play on a breakaway tonight.

Lots of different rotations that will work with this team, but the one that will be most fun to watch will be when we have Shannon, Alec, Cory, Marcus and Andre on the court. That group will jump passing lanes, run, and play above the rim.

ROBERSON is really a stud. Guy has athleticism and talent. Hard to tell his shooting skill by just one game though. But he is a huge pick up by us.

Alec and Cory were cold in game. Hopefully they will be better in next few games, which should be the case

-First game always is what it is, but rebounding is going to be a major issue again this year unless we get some better contribution. Gilchrest was an impressive player for Idaho State, but giving up 80 points and letting a 7-22 Big Sky team from a year ago shoot 55% isn't good. The defense definitely needs to show some improvement or we won't win at Georgia.

-I love the tempo and the offense. It's a great brand of basketball, and our passing was beautiful. This truly is an extremely fun team to watch, and it's incredible to see the talent/depth on the court compared to just a few short years ago.

-Crowd was great considering it was Idaho State. New video screen and ribbon boards are a crucial addition. CU basketball has definitely caught on with the students. CEC is going to get loud and rocking come conference play this season.

-Georgia is going to be a good test. They only beat MS Valley State 72-70, but they're supposed to be much improved with many picking them Top 25 and a March Madness team.

Appreciate the info from everyone. I figure there will be a few more tomorrow.

CUBuffs.com reported the attendance at 6800+, did it look that full to you?

Also, this Gilchrest kid -- is he just that good? Did anyone get any defensive stops on him?

Thanks again from a distance-challenged Buff fan. I hope to get to one game in late Dec when we visit.

There were definitely 6800 in there, imo.

Gilchrest is a baller. We had some nice takeaways at times, but overall they had lots of success taking it right to the rim with our players not contesting it the way coaches would want

I was impressed with Roberson and Levi last night....Cory didn't force things like Alec did...Burks has to understand his points will come and not force at times....defensively they are going to be a work in progress...it takes half a year to get the rotations to be more natural..help defense and rebounding were not good

solid first game. at least we didn't lose like wake forest :smile2:. Burc's looked like he was playing to impress the NBA, not win the game. But he's definitely got more hops this year and looks way stronger. That dunk was the most amazing thing I have seen in the keg. ever.

Gilchrest is one of those guys who is not a great player but has the ability on certain nights to flat go off, he did last night and that was what kept the game reasonably close. This Buff team was going to be weak inside as it was and losing Harris-Trunks makes that weakness critical. Tad is going to have to scramble all year to keep us from getting killed in the post.

I looked a lot like the team was still trying to get comfortable with each other and with what they were expected to do. This will take care of itself with some more time. They also looked like they wanted somebody else to play defense at times and this is going to be critical to fix if they are going to have a chance against better teams. Part of why Gilchrest was able to go off is because his quickness would get him past his man and the rest of the Buff would then just watch him do whatever he wanted to do, very little team D going on out there.

You guys know a lot more about basketball than I do. I thought we looked slow and flat. But, yeah, first game under a new coach running a new system will probably get you a lot of inconsistency.

BTW, Wake Forrest lost by ten, I think, to Stetson. Bite it, Jeff. They'll be calling for his head before you know it.

DBT,

It's a long season. You pretty much play your way into shape and figure out your player rotations in these early season games. Basically, except for a few tests put on the schedule, early games are like intense practices that count in the win column unless you lay a major egg. Coaches will sometimes even fool around with things to keep a game competitive longer instead of blowing a team out of the building.

One thing I thought was interesting/neat was that our coach played everybody in the first half. That's when Mills and Coney played. He did that so everybody could get a little "sweat" going. Hopefully that will help with player development down the road.

I totally get and undrestand that. I wasn't anymore ticked off than Tad was.

Not saying that I think CU played incredably well, but Idaho State was a much better team then I expected them to be. From their record, and their road losing streak, I was expecting a 40 point blow out. After watching the game again at home, I agree with most, CU has a lot to work on. But I also agree CU's biggest problem was likely first game jitters, and not completely knowing the role they were supposed to be playing (new coach, etc).

I think Idaho State should do very well in the Big Sky conference this year, much better than they have years past.

Is CU going to get dominated on the boards and in the paint again this year? We have the guards and 4 spot or small forward. Thoughts?

It is going to be a long year on the boards. Losing Tunks really hurt although even with him rebounding would have been an issue. One thing that was evident after watching Friday is that Boyle was not joking when he said the Buffs are going to be an up tempo team. Hopefully, the turnovers can be limited because there won't be much margin for error if we're losing on the boards.

Idaho St. is picked, like, 8th in their conference. One thing that bugged me was how much quicker the ISU kid, Gilchrest, was than our guys.

Yeah I knew this was going to happen. Every team we play is terrible until we play them, and turn into world beaters or sleeper teams after the win.

I will also say #2 smoked us something awful, but lets stick with the "we have a lot to work on because we barely beat an inferior opponent" strategy instead of the "Idaho State is gonna run the table this year with all their first year guys" line. Hopefully by Christmas, we'll know a little more about both teams and we can revisit this.

Good analysis here. Not much hasn't been covered. I don't feel like typing, so that's perfect for me. I'll be posting some long bball things this season though. And Buffnik, we'll coordinate better for next game. I lost track of time Friday before I left for Boulder.

We're out of town for the Alcorn State game.

Which reminds me, does anyone want 2 tickets and a parking pass (lot between the garage and the construction)? PM me and I'll mail them to you.

(And you slackers need to show up at the Club Room sooner than 8 minutes before tipoff.)

I dont think Idaho State will run away with anything, but they were not a BS team. They will likely do much better then 8th in the Big Sky if they play anything like they played friday. CU does have a lot to look forward to, and there was a key thing that Boyle said at half time. He said that even though #2 was beating us pretty bad, he was not going to double team him. If we were in the Big 12, I think we would have played it much differently, but I thought it was a great move that Boyle did by not changing the game plan, instead he wanted the players to learn to step in once he beat his defender. If you watch towards the end of the game, they started to figure it out. That was a great move, teach the players how to execute the way he wants, rather than play the early season game for the big blowout.

In January, I think everyone will start to understand what is expected of them, and we should have a very exciting team.

^^^^This^^^^

Couldn't make the game, but recorded it and watched it yesterday. Biggest thing I saw was a lot of lazy defense. Guess that's to be expected when going from the match-up zone that Bzz played, to Boyle's man to man D. Not too big a deal now, but needs to be fixed by January.
