So how do they recruit at AFA? They are a run team right?

If Calhoon is the man, how is he going to recruit? I am under the impression that the way AFA recruits football players is waaaaay different than how the rest of the college football world recruits.

Will Calhoon be able to be a great recruiter?

And is the AFA still running that wacky triple option run attack they used to run with Fischer Deberry?

Doesn't Air Force have like 200 players in their program? I seem to recall reading that during Fisher's days and that was one of the reasons why they were so successful because they always had "experienced" teams each year .

That could be... Aren't all the AFA cadets technically on scholarship? I am under the impression that everyone is more like a preferred walkong at AFA. Does he actually have to go into living rooms and tell them why AFA is better than USC and Cal? I mean how many times has he been able to talk a kid out of going to a another school to be a football player to coming to AFA and being a cadet that plays football for a few years before serving 4-10 years in the Air Force?

EB can recruit and that is the most important thing that we need. I can't see this guy beating out EB when USC or UCLA hires him as their head coach in another year or two.
 
All AFA cadets are on Federal grants, therefore they are not limited to the 85 max scholarship rule. The last time I remember a count, was that there were 105 to 110 players on the team.

AFA has a rule that no true freshman can play in a game (I'm certain, but not 100% about that), so that narrows it down a little bit in regards to who is eligible to play in games each year.

It is essentially like having an unlimited number of walk-ons.

Not being a Calhoun-backer here, but he has to do more than go into living rooms and "sell" AFA, he also has to get the kid to get letters of recommendation an sponsorship from either a Senator or Congressman (or both, can't remember exactly).

AFA does not go "head to head" in recruiting with the big dogs of the CFB world, that is certain. It is a different animal altogether.

The argument of a service academy coach not being able to recruit at a BCS level school isn't one based on anything but "fear". Don't pigeonhole a guy to say that he can't do it.

Paul Johnson is doing at Georgia Tech.

Now, that doesn't mean he is the right man for the job.
 
That makes sense... I think his job is a little more difficult actually but again like you said, a different animal for sure. He has about the same recruiting experience that we need as EB has HC experience. For me though, I think recruiting is the most important thing for the HC. Xs and Os are good but that is what the OC and DC and assts are for.

Not saying he couldn't do it, but if we want to get the best possible guy in the job EB has by far the highest ceiling, but he is probably far more prone to say things that the stiffs in charge don't like.
 
Calhoun was on the radio earlier this week and was asked about getting his team up to play NM and how does he do it. His response was easy, I tell everyone to remember that not a single player on our team was even recruited by NM.

You "recruit" a completely different individual to AF.
 
I doubt those last 20-25 guys at AFA would even play a snap for CU, ever.

I think CU needs to make a spash with the next HC hire. Not sure if Calhoun is a splash, probably not.
 
I really don't think that CU needs to make a big splash with the hire. What we need is a guy who can recruit, can bring in a solid group of assistants, and can communicate well with fans, players, boosters, administrators and the media. I really don't have a preference who we do hire, so long as whoever it is can do these things well. I'm not certain Calhoun is a guy who can do all of those things effectively.

That's true. I guess Hawk was pretty splashy hire and that turned out to be a disaster. I look at UT hiring David McWilliams, former player on a UT national champ team, rock solid guy, loved by everyone, "fit" Texas perfectly in style....terrible head coach. So, basically, I don't know wtf i'm talking about and neither does anyone else. It's kind of a crapshoot.
