Need former CU football player on search committee

Listening to Klatt and CJ on the Ticket. Kyle Ringo was just on and said that although identity of entire committee hasn't been revealed, he understands that an academic is on the committee (David Cough, Rick Pereka (sp?)). He said, and I strongly agree, that it is perplexing not one former football player will be on the committee. This is a terrible oversight, and really neuters a large base of the Mac support on the committee. According to Ringo, Mike Bohn is the only person involved in the day-to-day administration of the athletic department that is on the committee.

Ugh.

I'll reserve judgment until we know who is actually on the committee. But it stands to reason that you'd want football people involved in hiring a football coach.

I agree with you, Nik. It does seem to make sense that football people should hire a football coach.

Unbelievable we are doomed to failure. Whether it limits the Mac support isn't what worries me the most. Its the fact that we have a majority of people who don't know the first thing about football making the most important decision the CU athletic dept faces in the near future. Its not that different from the military. Soldiers can tell within the first few minutes
which NCO's and Officers are good and which are full of ****. Give me some football players and they will be able to tell you within the first few minutes of an interview if potential recruits will buy into and follow our candidates or not.

I am going to take a wait and see approach, but I am very skeptical about this. Number one, MB has yet to hire a winner. Number two, the committee chair is a faculty representative, not necessarily a bad thing, but not exactly a resounding pro-FB choice either. And number three, the timing of this is getting ridiculous. MB said he'd have a committee announced by the end of the week preceding the ISU game, and yet, the info just dribbles out, almost a full week behind MB's timetable. That makes me think the political jockeying to push various agendas is in full swing and MB is not in control. If MB is not in control that means the admin. and the academics have the thumbs on the scale which means the hire is much more likely to be a cluster....

Based on what I just heard on the radio show...we will never know the entire roster of the search committee. I know for a fact that there is a ex player on the search committee.

I hope you're right, Dixon, but I call BS. Ringo is pretty plugged in and said there wasn't an ex player on the committee.

LOL... Ringo is only plugged in to what the AD tells him. Ringo doesn't know or report anything Bohn doesn't approve. I trust the majority of the real insiders more than Ringo... by far.

I am forced to reserve judgment, because my initial reactions:

1) Typical CU bureaucracy. Make an academic head of the search committee. <sarcasm>I'm sure this search will go quickly and focus only on football <sarcasm/>.
2) No former players. At least Joe Romig could be on this committee?

Ugh!

If you're right, then Bohn wants Ringo to report that there are no ex-football players on the committee. Given the sh*tstorm that will elicit from the fanbase, Bohn would prove once again he isn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

I don't think that Ringo's a pawn of the AD. Far from it. I just don't think he's all that dialed in, either. He's got his sources from working this beat every day, but he has been off on a number of things lately. My impression is that he has been blackballed a bit since he had his buffzone chat where he laid out Benson for the decision to retain Hawkins.

i agree with Nik here. at some point about a year ago, Kyle did a 180 on Hawkins and he's been pretty critical of (to borrow Neill Woelk's old term) "the gang on the Hill" ever since. I don't see him as a creature for Bohn at all.

Interesting. Ringo is kind of goofy if you ask me, but I have a ton of resopect for him if he took BB to task over keeping D II. At least he isn't a fanny smoocher like Woellk. I tend to listen to what Ringo has to say far more than Neill....

I nominate buffalo30 to be the former player on the committee.

Given Mac's candidacy, I actually prefer if any player is on the committee that it no be someone who played for him.

I agree, let's keep off the committee players that had more success than any other football players in CU football history. Makes perfect sense. Let's only pick players for the committee that played for sh*tty coaches in CU history. They're best qualified to pick a football coach.

Only Hawkins and Fairbanks players allowed on the committee.

Geezus.

Well, there could be a smidge of conflict of interest if you have former Mac players on a committee that is choosing from a candidate pool that includes Mac

So long as the potential (and it is only a potential) conflict is disclosed to the committee, then I'd have no problem with a player that won the only NC in CU football history sitting on the committee.

C'mon, you have to see why that could be a conflict. Get a Barnett player if you want - not every player that didn't play for Mac is a loser.

Would that conflict of interest be anything like when an AD goes to the headhunter who got him his job and hires the HC that headhunter picks while paying a fat fee to the headhunter in the process?

Let's be realistic here, the CFB universe is pretty small...I wouldn't be too concerned if a Mac player were on the committee.

As long as the potential conflict is disclosed, then a Mac player should be allowed to sit on the committee. The thing that I want to ensure is that the best person for the committee is actually named to the committee. If it's a player that played for Mac, the fine. If he played for Gary, then fine. If he played for Hawk, then tough luck (kidding). I just want the best person on the committee regardless of stupid bright line rules.

agreed.

The other thing is that you want people with open minds to participate, not people with tunnel vision for one guy.

I don't understand your logic. Not similar at all.

I had also thought a major Buff Club person should be on there - likely as a non-voting participant. Interesting that a denver paper today said the expected annoucement of the search committee has been delayed, because no on campus interviews have taken place.

What the hey could that signify?

At $400k a year to run CU athletics, how can Bohn not know who and what he going to do? he's had many months to think about it.

Go Buffs!

agreed.

:yeahthat: There is NO WAY a Mac player should be on the committee deciding whether or not to hire Mac. There are plenty of good candidates from good CU teams who didn't play for Mac. How about somebody from the great Crowder/Mallory teams of the 70s??

There is a Buff Club member named Jerry who should sit on this committee. He has been president of the Denver Chapter and is a pretty strong supporter of what is happening with the BBall team right now (according to Nik I believe). Jerry is a hard core supporter of the program and athletics in general. He would be a very good voice and is fairly well tied politically (which could not hurt as well).

Apparently by "never", Joel and CJ meant "in a couple hours"....
