Academics chime in.

Mick if you read this, please chime in regarding the faculty. You say they don't worry about athletics but they run around have to make resolutions about the coaching hire.

Sorry to be cranky but those who claim the academic side is not the problem are just plain wrong.

I wonder if the faculty would be willing to pass a resolution stating that they would be willing to spend time with and help struggling football players maintain a higher GPA

Faculty resolutions at universities generally amount to somethng similar to that smoldering manure pile in the state to the northeast of Colorado. What percentage of the CU faculty attend football games?
effete > soft, decadent and overrefined

seriously, what else are they going to say? Hire a guy who doesn't give a crap about the classroom? i repeat my opinion that the BFA has very little actual power. i don't think it's nearly the issue that people think it is....a convenient, all-purpose scapegoat mostly. frankly, most faculty are WAY more concerned with themselves to have any real purpose to undermine football at CU. this seems like more smoke than fire to me.

but, i can tell that most of you like the "evil, all-powerful" faculty angle. if you think the faculty at Texas or Florida are all big football fans and it's somehow diff at CU....I think you are very mistaken.

**** em! Hire a guy who wants to win and bring back prestige to CU. Academics are important but as the last 5 years have showed, winning is what a coach is hired to do.

I didn't think the article read all that bad. Plus what is a faculty resolution going to do anyway? Seems like a bunch of nothing to me.

Not a problem, what football coach isn't "for academics". This is like the politician that is "for schools". No one is going to come out and say they are not for academics. Just like no politician will say they aren't for education.

When the time comes though, they need to focus on football just like the politico will cut funding for schools if it means good press on a tax break.

It's all talk either way. If the team is winning and going to championship games no one will care if they have a low GPA. It is on the players to realize that they can get educated will taking their shot at the NFL.

i'd also like to beg off on being the token, "speak for the faculty" person at AB. i realize that i've offered my opinion and sometimes inside info on these matters of my own volition much of the time.

i just want to read and post. not be the spokesperson for some unofficial perspective. i just think there are times that if someone outside your profession started telling you all about how to do your job or what it means or how it could be done better....you'd probably respond as well. i realize most people went to CU or college here and imagine that affords them insight into how a university actually works.....but that's sort of like saying because you find your gate and fly to O'Hare on a plane that you know how to fly one.

jmo.

How about they just don't say anything at all. It comes off as they are trying to stick their nose in something when to be honest we haven't seen a lot of support from the faculty in the papers or media for the team and the program in general over the years.

Asking college students to pay attention to academics.......the unabashed nerve of these people.

****'em they should be going out of their way to help student athletes not just football players but all athletes.

One of the paragraphs in the article:

"At CU-Boulder, the average grade-point average of student-athletes is 2.79, compared with the campuswide average of 3.0, according to a new report from the athletic department. Football players maintain an average 2.43 GPA, which is the lowest team average on the Boulder campus. "

They're harping at what? Okay, maybe this is a bit too literal, but the non-athletes average is a B, the athletes (in all) average is a B-, and the football players average is a, what, almost C+?

I suppose this could just be an attention-getter. Perhaps the academics figure that the FB team isn't doing to bad in the classroom, and they just want to keep it that way.

This.

I know this comes as news to some of you but CU is, after all, first and foremost an academic institution.

Academics should come first, and there's nothing wrong with the faculty saying that.

Having the faculty say they want someone to emphasize strong academics is akin to the Secretary of the Treasury, Tim Geithner saying he values a strong dollar while Ben Bernanke prints trillions in fiat currency to support our spending habits.

The faculty can talk all they want, and we should nod politely. I doubt anyone in the football office wants a bunch of non-qualifying, non-graduating thugs running around anymore than they want a team of weakling brainiacs.

We need to just chill over this, it will all work out.

I don't have a problem with the faculty wanting good academics, but they need to also keep in mind that their inflated paychecks and pensions would not be nearly as big without big time athletics drawing interest to the University.

Marshawn Lynch and Desean Jackson went to Cal enough said. I would bet that Mac had more academic All Americans than Hawk doing it the right way.

That "resolution" was pure apple pie. It means nothing except that they noticed there will be a new hire.

I want our players to be respected both for what they do on the playing field as well as for what they do in the classroom. Not only that, I think athletes who are intelligent perfrom better. However, if we want to be a perrenial top 25 program, we HAVE to allow some at risk guys into the program and that may end up hurting our bottom line gpa. I can live with that.

Good luck connecting those dots.

Great post. I think alot on here use academics, like you said, as a scapegoat. I did my undergrad at an SEC school and the faculty, if they even paid attention to football or other sports, were not supportive. It's that way anywhere you go.

You are totally missing the point. The faculty resolution is like the old "Do you still beat your wife?" The resolution is a slap in the face to the AD. For the last several years the AD has been emphasizing the GPA of the athletes to the point of ridicule from fans. The faculty is acting like the AD has never mentioned academics. It is a typical cheap shot from the CU academic side.

BG, you asked if it irritated anyone else. Some of us say no. Relax.

From the article:

The measure states that CU's football program "has demonstrated commitment to the principles of, and shown improvement in, academic performance as well as citizenship." The department this year has new programs in place to improve the academic performance of football players, who have the lowest team average GPA on the Boulder campus.

So I guess I'm having a hard time really seeing the problem here. Including what I quoted above, it really, to me, sounds like the measure is just saying, "Keep doing what you're doing."

That's how I read it to. Sounded to me like the things the article mentioned is a good thing for student athletes in the way of more academic support.
