I've never joined an opponent's message board, but with this being our final conference game together, it's a bit sentimental to me. While most Nebraskans don't fully embrace a rivalry with Colorado, primarily because of the overall lopsided series record, I am here to say that I will miss this series.
Cornhuskers love to live in our time machines and look back at the glory years, but many of us, too, realize that Colorado has seen the "top of the mountain" too. You're our only Big 12 North partner that has won a National Championship, a Conference Championship and even a Heisman trophy winner. The KSU fans and Missouri fans love to point out how they've "caught up to Nebraska"-- especially during our irrelevant Callahan years. But the difference between them and Colorado, is that you guys have been to the top--those guys haven't.
I'll miss this competive series because of the good, hard hitting, close games. Seems like the winner always gets it with a little bit of luck. Not always.. there's been the blowouts (and I sure as heck remember 62-36)--but over the last decade, the games have been fairly close; regardless of either team's record.
I'll never forget sitting with my dad in the freezing rain in Lincoln in 1990 watching a hard fought NU-CU game. We were up 12-0 to start the 4th quarter, but Eric Bieniemy couldn't be stopped in the 4th as Colorado rallied for a 27-12 win. At that point, I elevated Colorado to the ranks of Nebraska and Oklahoma.
I was also in Boulder for that crazy 65-51 game to close out the big Callahan debacle.
So here we are facing the last game. Nebraska is prime for an upset. Here it is Wednesday, and we're still griping about the A&M loss with our tinfoil hats talking about conspiracy theories and reading interviews in the Omaha World Herald with sports psychologists discussing why the Pelinis may or may not be nuts.
Taylor Martinez-- who is our entire offense-- will not play. Niles Paul-- our hot and cold receiver, will not play. I know you guys have lost your starting QB too-- but the difference is that you guys are moving the ball. We're not.
Take away Martinez, you take away our offense. Anyone who doubts that-- just look at the A&M game. In the second half, NU chose to play a one-legged Martinez over a healthy Cody Green. Does that tell you about our confidence in Green's abilities? Cody Green has been a complete bust and has not had a good game in the 2 years that he's played.
Our defense is solid against the pass, but a little porous at times against the run. I'm very surprised that most of our opponents haven't just lined up and tried to run at us. Iowa State, Texas and Texas A&M did it the most-- and look at the results.
My prediction is a low scoring, defensive game--similar to the A&M game. I think the game is a toss up. You guys are riding high with some new found spark, and we are a big fat question mark on offense. We have some playmakers-- our problem is the play caller.
Obviously, I hope for a Husker victory. We want the fairy tale ending of hauling off the Big 12 trophy in our final season. We haven't touched the darn thing since '99--so it sure would be nice.
Good luck in the PAC-12! Hopefully you guys can show them, and we can show the Big 10 that some good ol' Big 8 teams can play some football!
GO BIG RED!
