What Happened to Us?

Let me begin by saying that any of those top three candidates could potentially come in and become the third member of the Holy Triumverate already consisting of Coaches Crowder and Mac. It could happen. In 20 years we might speak of Jon Embree--as a coach--in the same hushed tones we currently reserve for Coach Mac.

And also that I recognize that the Search Committee and Bohn were forced to wrestle with fiscal and political realities that we aren't in a position to fully understand. They were privy to interviews and information that I was not.

However, I remain underwhelmed with our top three (as outlined by the BDC yesterday).

Our Program: Remains a top-20 in all time wins, and in the last two decades spent years at a time in the top 5/10 positions in the polls. Less than 20 years we had the highest paid head coach in college football.

Football is practically our sole revenue-generating sport (guessing on that one...anyone?). All of Colorado's sports and student-athletes are somewhat dependant on a successful football program.

It's what unites us as a state, as alums and as a fanbase. A successful football program helps link us to our University, and generates excitement and donations for our school.

We want to be proud of our football program.

The Top Three: To this fan, our top three candidates would all constitute risky hires. None are proven as Head Coaches at the college level. Two out of three have no coordinator experience. None would be considered "hot hires".

At a down time in our program's history, an exciting hire would reignite (presumably) dwndling excitement for our program. None of these hires (apologies to the pro-EB crowd, but I don't really get that one) excite me.

As screechy internet fans... we shouted down qualified candidates. Not that I believe that it influenced the hiring process. But some of those candidates that qualified as "meh" (or worse), not too long ago include names like Calhoun, Hoke, Richt and Fitzgerald.

I'd place any of those proven candidates over the three that were selected. Not that they were beating down our door, or were interested on any level. But still...

For Christ's sake, Kansas chose a somewhat proven D1 HC. Have we sunk below Kansas' football level? Their fanbase would probably think so, but I think a survey of college football fans outside of Kansas would disagree.

How did we get here. When did we abandon the driver's seat? What factors influenced this process that resulted in this list of unproven candidates.

If our hire comes from these candidates, it will only confirm what other fans have been telling us for the last three years: We are a broke-dick athletic school. The hiring of any of these three will be most newsworthy initially, NOT because it will demonstrate our committment to winning, but rather it will show the world exaclty how far we've fallen.

No disrespect intended to the candidates. This is about qualifications, not the people themselves (to of whom are great Buffs).

Meh.

this is what happens when you stay "in the family"

100% agree with everything in here. It is a bit perplexing, do we chalk it up to a lack of potential available candidates?

I think we chalk it up to influences in & around the program that made it impossible to do a nationwide search.

I chalk it up to narrow mindedness of both the AD and the fanbase. People just HAD to have someone in the family. As a result, quite a few good candidates were ignored or bashed endlessly because they weren't from the family. Now that people see what the "in the family" candidates bring to the table, it's not impressive enough for a BCS level HC job. If EB or Embree are the candidates CU is taking a monster risk, one that could sink the program for quite some time. They are leaving the football future of the school, at a pivotal time (switching of a conference) to somebody who will likely be woefully underqualified... but rationalizing it because the person loves the school and was a good player here 20 something years ago. Love for the Buffs and playing here does not equate to being a solid head coaching candidate, regardless of how many people want it to.

You may be right. There may have been a strong push for a politically safe hire. Cash had to have been a factor too, no?

Oh Hoke, what might have been...

What happened to us? I don't know, Wally. I've been thinking about this too. Sometimes, late at night, when I can't sleep. I mean, we were so happy for a while. Everything seemed perfect. But then, it seemed like things changed. Nothing was the way it used to be. The passion was gone. I think we started losing it when we started hanging around that little blond prick with the guitar. He was charming and seemed nice, but it seems like we just stopped being happy. For a while I thought we might find it again by spending time with Barney. Remember when the passion came back? We starting thinking about the dominants coming back and everything... It was nice, but it didn't last. It turned out Barney and the blond guy both had some bad habits, and people found out about them... I think we all kind of got caught up in the crossfire, and whatever feelings we started to have just got lost again.

Then there was Dan. He was supposed to be the answer to all our problems. He was going to help us get over what happened with Barney and with that blond dude. He was going to teach us how to be happy and how to love again. The problem with turning yourself over to somebody like that is that, well, sometimes they're just frauds. Dumb**** assholes who just want to take your money, and in the end leave you worse off than ever. Not only are we not happy, but we've forgotten how to trust. The love is still there, but the joy is gone. The passion still burns once in a while, but it's more like anger now. It's full of pain and hurt.

I don't really know who to blame. The blond prick and Dan, of course. What a couple of ****ing assholes. But it isn't just on them. Everybody played a part. Us included. We've all lost our way in one way or another. I'm not sure where we go from here, to be honest.....

I think you can trace a lot back to Rick Neuheisel leaving for Washington. I think that move set in motion a lot of instability in the program. We are looking at our fourth head coach in just about 15 years. Not good.

We chose a somewhat proven HC the last time as well

Same as Nebraska, or OU in the 90's.

A big name is not necessarily the best hire. I was a student when Fairbanks was hired, and I skipped class just so I could hear the press conference. An NFL head coach and former great at Oklahoma coming to the Buffs!!! There was lots of excitement. We all know how that turned out. When Mac was hired the mood was generally "Mac who???"

CU has an advantage over other down trodden programs in that it DID win a national championship in the not too distant past (1990). Why not hire someone with ties to that past, who understands the unique challenges of winning in Boulder, rather than an outsider? I wanted EB but I'm OK with Embree.

:iagree:

Not just somewhat proven, but a really hot hire. That's why everyone was down on Calhoun and other current head coaches. It's probably not reasonable, but we got burned by hiring the resume last time, so I'm OK with hiring potential this time.

And we both know we are not those programs, so I am not sure their struggles are relevant to our current struggles.

I think OU's struggles are similar to ours now. Sure, we don't have the support and money they do, but OU went on a slide because of scandals. Plus, it took OU 4 hires since Switzer to get back to glory. This is our 4th hire since Mac. Just sounds good!

BTW, I agree with you, was just pointing out that.:smile2:

Pretty abomination post, bro.

I think that the Barnett scandal plus the adoption of TABOR as a state policy has changed the mindset of the people at the University.....I mean seriously what quality coach can sell his assistants to come here the way things are currently set up

Whats this "potential" I keep hearing about, because by AB definition it would seem anybody that played or coached at CU prior to 1994 has "potential". Some of the dumbfux on here crowing about EB's potential wouldnt know anything about football that they didnt hear somewhere else. The great thing about our choices is that we dont have to worry about some other program snapping them up before we hire them. We are the only team looking at them for HC.

Rodney Stewart worked out for us. Darrell Scott didn't. FACT!

What has he done to show he has so much potential? Have a fiery attitude and recruit a few players?

EB is gonna be a great HC somewhere someday. He is a great coach, motivator and recruiter. I just hope it's us that gets him.

You are selling EB short. USC wanted him as an OC and the Vikings gave him a promotion. That doesn't sound like some other guy.

Add into the fact EB was considered one of the top recruiters in the country when he was at CU and UCLA.

Oh, also EB has better hair than Calhoun.
