would it be legal for a private donor to provide additional money to EB, if he came on board?

Also, make the announcement today. It's a huge weekend for college ball and it would be nice if potetial recruits could listen to all the announcers talking about the "new" CU program

Pretty sure that is legal, it's only messing with recruits, players and their families that is against NCAA rules. You can also hire someone for additional duties, such as running camps, speaking engagements, and so on, that will pump their overall "salary."

YES! Exactly! Why wait till monday when the news of this will have much more traction if they get it out there before the weekend!

Because this is a state-run university and they cannot announce anything until negotiations are over and contracts are signed.
Anything else would be premature, which is why Bohn tried to get everything in a row before any announcement was made.

Sigh.
It's not just the HC, it's every assistant who has to accept terms and notify his employer. It's a total mess.

This is perfectly legal, went on for years at Hawaii with June Jones, and likely would have gone on here with Les miles.

Even that isn't illegal. You just need to be a part of the SEC and/or be in the running for the mNC.

Duh. sorry, should have qualified which conferences I was talking about. :smile2:

How's the PAC12 with all this? Reggie Bush? Or do they just make an occasional high-profile example and let the rest of the water flow under the bridge?

That's exactly why you wait until Monday. Don't kid yourself, CU is down right now, the announcement would be a footnote.

You announce on Monday and have a much better shot of enjoying the national spotlight for a day or two.

This is why salaries are broken down.

Hawks actual SALARY was only $300k I think. He got another $500k from speaking appearances (donations) Another $300k from Nike (donations) another $400k from camps (donations), etc...

*Those numbers are just for the purpose of discussion and aren't the actual breakdown of the salaries.

There will be a lot of college ball discussed next few days, with conference games etc. at a peak. You're right: CU will garner more attention Monday with an announcement.

Hopefully the announcement is loaded with details about the staff that is coming as well. Would definitely add weight and interest to the story.

Not true people work for months on LOAs. Hawkins did not sign his contract for several months after being on the job.

Legal is the a strange word in this context. All money has to funnel through the University to the employee regardless of source - that is why things like Nike money, etc are earmarked but they flow through the University. I do not know without doing a lot of research but I think it has to do mostly with not allowing outside employment...The University wants to own the relationship with donors and sponsors and not have the coach own that relationship.

A donor could give money to the AD and request that it be used for increasing coaches salaries ( Charitable donations are tricky if they have too many restrictions).

I would think that is one of the reasons that they picked Monday to announce -- to give them time to verify a lot of the staff -- and be able to announce everything at once.

If you read coach contracts from around the nation, it's pretty common that a good portion of the compensation usually comes from sources other than the athletic department.

My guess is that the wait until Monday is so that Embree (and hopefully EB) can coach their teams on Sunday one more time.

Not saying this would be a great idea, but how about if CU took out some ads in So Cal papers, sports sections, the day of/after the announcement, informing P12 fans that the Buffs are loading up and getting ready to kick ass with their new leaders? Obviously not phrased just that way, but something that visually, and with words, would let recruits know the Buffs will be a viable force in the league.

Gop Buffs!
