Dave Logan turned UNC down

I think this should, pretty much, put to rest any thought that Dave would want to coach college football.

That would have been a great stepping stone job for him. He could have recruited in the area and built UNC up to be respectable again and grab an FCS job. He is probably very happy with what he does now, good for him.

They offered him a 4 year deal ( I thought everyone was given 5 )

I would be interested in knowing just what the offer was for... money wise and his reason for saying no.

Dave Logan seems like a great broadcaster and obviously he can coach. I wish people would stop bringing up his name as a HC at CU. He's not willingly to work his way up and there is something extremely bothersome about that. If he proved his worth at UNC and say Embree didn't work out for whatever reason, he could be right in position to coach here. He's unwilling to take the step back though, to take two steps forward.

Logan is getting too old to be working his way up the ladder or ever be in a position to coach CU. He'll be 57 in a little over a month. The earliest CU opens up again, Logan will be in his 60s with no college or pro coaching experience.

I really hope I never hear his name in this context again. It's ludicrous, always has been, and is going beyond that now.

And it pisses me off that I can't just celebrate the guy as one of the greatest ever Buff athletes.

Well, you shouldn't be pissed at Dave. Its not his fault his name keeps coming up.

I don't get it. He was a great Buff, in multiple sports. He's great at what he does, and apparently really enjoys it.

Why is he obligated to fullfill your vision for his career? Why not be happy for him and celebrate him as the great Buff that he was/is?

Wally, I don't have a vision of his career. I'm talking about the Denver media's obsession with trotting his name out for every CU opening, the idot fans who go along with it, and how this causes me to explain (again and again) to people why Logan's isn't qualified for the position, why it would be a mistake, etc. I feel like I'm ripping on a guy who isn't even publicly lobbying for the job.

UNC is a really tough job. There are some big-time FCS programs in the Big Sky.

Logan is conflicted...he really wants to be a BCS-level college HC. (CU is about the only job that he would have a shot at and that is a long shot). But he has been very successful doing other things and makes very good money. As a result he has never taken a coaching job as a career choice and worked his way up. He turned down the UNC job because of money. Part of him wanted to take the job but the pay cut is just too much (it would be for most people).

But nothing to feel sorry about here...he has a good gig and makes money most people would only dream about.

Like Nik, I get irritated because when I say that Logan is not qualified to be CU's head coach I am labeled as a Logan Hater. I really like Dave Logan but that does not mean he should be CU's HC.

Still a bargaining chip with his current employers. He can now go back to Mullen and KOA and the Broncos and ask for more money - because another job was out there.

Really?

If an employee came to me and said he interviewed for another job, but it paid less money so he turned it down... so now he wants a raise... I'd probably be laughing so hard I'd forget to fire him.

Interviewing for a job you don't necessarily want isn't all that uncommon. In many cases, it's just a way to test the waters and see what's available. He may have felt like it was a job he might like prior to the interview, and afterwards felt like it was not in his best interest.

I'd be very surprised if Mullen or KOA fired him for interviewing at UNC

You guys are spot on. If Dave wants to be a HC, he needs to be a position coach first and work his way through the ranks. I don't understand his mindset.

Mullen is a drop in the Bucket to what he makes so he has no reason to approach them - he donates that money to his assistants anyway. Probably 60 to 70 percent of Logan's income is generated from promotional spots which he and his agent negotiate directly with the sponsors. I would not be surprise if Logan makes over a million year with his various activities. I don't think there is any bargaining chip in there. I think he wanted to see if they would say anything interesting.

Montana State and Eastern Washington, for starters. I think Toledo is in the Big Sky too...

Seriously though. MSU and EWU are tough, and on top of that you have Montana and Utah State in there and Jerome Souers gets quality wins out of his Northern Arizona teams every year. Finishing middle to bottom of the Big Sky, albeit a good conference but an FCS regardless, won't bolster head coaching stock much. Offensive position coach or coordinator at an FBS would be the way to go at this point in his career as he's getting up there. But I appreciate the job he's doing for CO prep football right now. Hopefully he can develop a killer relationship with Embree and staff as long as he's comfortable where he is.

Except that if his name is consistently put forth as a legitimate candidate for a job, he must be a legitimate candidate for the job. I love how you feel that YOUR opinion is somehow gospel. I don't know what you do for a living, but I can tell you that with 12,249 posts you aren't an AD or an assistant AD at a university - therefore you are LESS qualified than the AD at UNC to make a decision on who is qualified to be a coaching candidate and who's not. If UNC believes that Logan is qualified to coach at an FCS school - then he is. If he wasn't, they wouldn't have made the offer. That's how that works. Qualified=Make offer. Not qualified=Dont make offer. Whether he would have been a GOOD coach is certainly up for debate, but if CU is bandying his name around (And Im not sure that they ever were), then he was qualified for the job at CU. Just because someone gets one division 1 job, that doesn't mean they are qualified for another. Embree's name was on the lips of NO ONE prior to CU hiring him, he isnt qualified for the job at Miami, or Bama, or any other premier program in which cachet is an important part of the position.

I was talking about CU, not UNC.

CU did not bandy Logan's name about. His Denver media cronies did.

And Embree was well-known as a candidate by just about everyone. He was the only guy besides Hawkins who was interviewed the last time around. He was on the interview list this time around. If you want, you can look back and find threads on this site about him as a candidate during this season and during last season.

P.S. I challenge you to find anywhere where I have written that post count = knowledge. The majority of mine, anyhow, come from building the profiles in the recruiting forums and updating the season data in the different forums. If that's an issue for you, then so be it. I guess you've got a problem with me for some reason. Hopefully that will change. Please, though, try not to make assumptions about what I feel or read tone into a message board post. You're likely to be wrong and it does no one any good.

edit: I just re-read the post you responded to, JD. I did sound kind of dooshy. Holiday travel with a toddler and a mother-in-law probably doesn't have me at my best.
