How much better would the MNC game be

If they didn't wait six weeks to play it? The delay has a huge impact on the quality of the game, I think. Also makes it anticlimactic and somewhat boring. Not to mention it's a stupid Monday night game.

Agreed. not so much anti-climatic however, just that the "momentum of the season" has slowed down.

With NFL playoff season, the CFB bowl games should be finished on New Year's Day.

I would much prefer to drop the "rotating" title game, add the Cotton Bowl to the BCS mix as the "5th game" and then call them the traditional bowl games once again. I'm not sure what happens to the Fiesta Bowl's Big-12 tie-in at that point, but that bowl game has always been a trailblazer, maybe they would be happy with a first choice of At-Large schools (I'm sure it is better than getting stuck with the Big East champion). Or maybe the Cotton would lose their Big-12 automatic tie-in?

Anyway, get all the bowls over with on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day!

It sucks just getting home in time for the kickoff. It's much more fun watching a couple of games, getting the chips and dip ready, a case of beer or margaritas, and kick back to watch the game. Instead, it's get home, watch the game, maybe catch the news, and hit the sack. In a word: BORING!

Supposedly the game on Monday set a new ratings record for a show on cable.

But still fell off 11% from last year's network game ratings. (link)

ESPN doesn't need to draw better ratings than networks, due to their revenue model but it can't be good for CFB to have a smaller audience for the biggest game of the year.

Interesting stuff, Scotty. We're witnessing such a monumental shift in media right now. I can't help but think that the sports, conferences and programs that get it right can make major moves. On that note, I'm feeling really good about the Pac-12, not so great about the NCAA, pretty discouraged on Plati, and undecided on Bohn.

3 weeks should be the max. It seems Offenses really lose timing over the longer period and Defense really has the advantage. I know NU always talked about that when they ran option and how the layoff affected them until they stopped letting kids leave for break and kept practicing.

You kind of heard the same stuff from the B10 when OSU made the Title game and their last game was November since there was no Title game. That is a huge layoff.

All Bowls should be fit into a 3 week window.

Of course, the obvious solution is a playoff beginning two weeks after the regular season with the championship game being one of the big 4 bowl games. The remaining bowl structure for teams not in the playoff can just remain status quo.

I prefer to have a championship game the week after the bowls end on New Years Day.

Why are you discouraged by Plati?

Just a hunch, but it might have something to do with Plati's head-in-the-sand approach to new media. We're going to need people who not only accept new media, but embrace it and use it to their advantage.

they need to throw him in a broom closet and let him crunch stats...let somebody else be the SID

I wouldn't say boring because there have been some good championship games in the past, but there's no doubt in my mind that the long layoff has an effect on the quality of play. Waiting until New Year's Day has always been the case so I'm ok with that, but adding another week-plus for no reason at all is simply ridiculous.

I completely agree about it being anti-climactic and the fact that it's on a weeknight. It's almost to the point where I have to remind myself, oh yea, the NC game is coming up. And the fact that it's on a weeknight is just ridiculously stupid. And now they're trying to ruin the Super Bowl too with the late Sunday kickoff, they need to seriously look at moving up the start time anywhere from 2-4 hours. Or go to Saturday night as we've discussed on here before.

Personally I think Plati gets a bad rap in this area. Most of the reputation in this area has to do with the media credentials battle with Ted Smith at netbuffs about 10 years ago. That argument had little to do with the new media and had more to do with what qualifies as legitimate media. CU has embraced the Internet...they have the online broadcast, they have hired B.G. Brooks to write articles on cubuffs.com and Plati writes Platitudes periodically.

Of course I like Plati so I am biased. He is one of the good guys in my book.

Seems like the reason the National Championship game is played a week and a half into the new year, is because there are so many other bowl games out there. So as a fan, the overall quality of the game may be diminished, but it also means that if your team has a marginal season, it can still get to one of those lesser bowls. It will be tough to get back to a New Year's Day championship game if the overall number of bowls remains the same. There are a number of people who would have some heartburn about reducing the number of bowl games, though.

Do you see the theme here? New media is inclusive and has content that is created by all kinds of sources, open discussion, things going viral, etc. The three things you pointed out were examples of Plati thinking that the way to capitalize on new media is to figure out a way for the AD (specifically the SID) to completely control it as it relates to CU athletics. That's a pretty screwed up strategy that shows a complete unwillingness to embrace things as they are.

And how is what CU is doing any different than any other school? You cannot let this be a free-for-all. You have to control your messaging and make sure it is consistent. Could you give a concrete example of what you are talking about? Not ripping on you - I am just trying to see if this is a perception or something specific.

The perfect example are the comments on the Daily Camera articles? Ninety percent of the comments are made by the same A-holes which add nothing to the discussion. Why are the message boards moderated? Inclusion is great until it turns against you.

Real question...why does Plati get the blame? Mike Bohn actually gets to set the agenda not Plati. I think many here over interpret Plati's role in the AD. The SID's role is to make information available to the media in an honest manner and I think that people in the business would tell you that Plati is one of the best.

BlackNGold - here's an example for you that hits pretty close to home.

I'm sure you would agree that AllBuffs goes out of its way to be a friend of the CU programs. We hype events, we encourage donations, we try to keep the tone positive, etc., etc.

Do you think that the hundreds of visitors who come to this site every day would like to see AllBuffs start interviewing different coaches, administrators or players? Do you think that would be a positive thing if we submitted questions, got answers, and published them for the readers here?

Guess what. We can't do that because Plati is the gatekeeper for those interviews and the only way we can get these types of interviews is if we have a press credential. And the only way we can get a press credential is if we require every AllBuffs member and registered user to make his/her real name public in his/her profile. My understanding is that the only college or university that has a similarly draconian policy is BYU.

Well, nik, its your job to change that!
