Position changes this spring?

What position changes do you think we'll see this spring?

We heard already about both Mobley and Moten wanting to try out at QB. Do you think either sticks? If not, what position do you think each moves to after the QB experiment is over?

Some others that have been mentioned on message boards:

Deji Olatoye back to Cornerback from Safety
Paul Vigo to Safety from Cornerback
Trea Jones to Safety from Running Back
Cordary Allen to Fullback, Linebacker or Defensive End from Running Back
Nick Kasa to Defensive Tackle from Defensive End
Dakota Poole to Defensive Tackle from Defensive End
Vince Ewing to Linebacker from Safety
Ray Polk to Running Back or Linebacker from Safety
Tyler Ahles to Fullback from Linebacker
Derrick Webb to Fullback from Linebacker
Zach Grossnickle to Placekicker
Will Jefferson to Wide Receiver from Running Back

I doubt Polk, Webb, and Ahles make a switch to the other side of the ball. Polk has been a 2 year starter in what will be a unexperienced defensive backfield and Ahles and Webb saw a good amount of playing time for a core that lost Spilli and lost Major again to injury. If Rippy were to reclaim his old spot maybe Ahles would get switched over.

I hope most of these don't happen. I really hope Tui and McGhee teach Kasa some pass rushing skills, because Nick is a great talent. He should be a DE. Olatoye should be a CB...I think he was only switched due to all the injuries last year at S. He was getting rave reviews from teammates as a freshman CB, and we now need CB help.

Pretty much, I think Olatoye becomes a CB again, Vigo, Jones, Poole and Ahles moves also make sense to me (I hope Rippy comes on strong, and I think he will).

I'm not sure the WillJeff move would be wise, even with BLock returning healthy. Will has the most experience at rb after the 2 seniors.

plus I thought he was better than Lockridge. Jefferson is a great athlete, and we need RB depth - for the next two season.

With the additions of the two QBs from this class, I don't think either Mobley or Moten will be making that move. I definitely see Moten ending up back at CB based on his athleticism. Not so sure where Mobley ends up, but he seems like a guy who you want to get on the field in some capacity. The Polk move back to RB is about two years too late. He has been a bit rough around the edges for the safety position at times, but he is experienced and has improved. Cordary to FB actually seems like a pretty decent idea.

Polk moving to LB intrigues me. Really feel like we need more speed there.

This is what i think should happen given my extensive experience at a high level of couch coaching.

Deji- wanna see the talk about him last year being the next big cb
Vigo- don't really know. I thought i remember him being a little bigger so it makes sense to me.
Trea Jones- Stay at rb
Cordary- stay at rb if not then ok with move to fb
Kasa- stay at de
Poole- don't remember seeing him play so no opinion
Ewing- ehhh? maybe again don't remember seeing him much
Polk- STAY AT SAFTEY!!! I don't want to see his cfb career basically screwed up b/c he always switched positions and couldn't learn the position
Ahles- Stay at lb
Webb- saty at lb
Grossnickle- just make the field goals
Jefferson- move to wr but become our all purpose guy.
Moten- ^^^ would like to see him get involved with the offense.

I basically don't want these guys screwed up because they couldn't learn the positions.

Moving Polk would be disasterous. The last staff screwed the pooch on that one already. Don't make it worse. He's playing well at safety.

I'm not opposed to him staying at safety... but are you serious with that last statement?

would you two idots please read sack's sig line? :smile2:

I love Polk's speed/athleticism and I think he has potential to a be a solid safety, but I thought he was one of the bigger disappointments for the 2010 season.

The whole team had a lot to be desired last year. I thought Polk played well, all things considered.

I would agree. I thought that they put Polk in some very difficult positions. The play of the front seven was inconsistent at best and more realistically severely lacking at times. It also made things very difficult for Polk when Orms got hurt right off the mark and we had a string of injuries following at the nickel. A lot of times Polk looking bad was the result of trying to cover up the mistakes of the nickelbacks while still maintaining his safety responsibilities, a tough task for a guy with a lot more experience at the position than Polk had.

No.

I'd much prefer Kasa to stay DE, Polk at Safety, Cordary Clark at RB/FB, Olatoye at CB, Ahles/Webb stay at LB.

Any of the other Sophomore/RS Freshman can move, IMO, as it is still early for them to learn a new spot and we haven't seen what they can do anyway.

Vigo and Ewing need to go wherever they can make an impact as it is getting time for them to challenge for a starting position, or become a special teamer only.

Actually one of the toughest decisions would be Grossnickle as K. With Castor already there, I would like to see him get the chance to step up and we don't really have another option at Punter.

As far as Mobley, I would like to see him move to DE. When we recruited him I thought this would be a good spot for him. He is aggressive, has perfect size, and we have a need for underclassmen at the DE spot.

One more "switch" that needs to be watched is Gus Handler. He came in as a guard, but played some center last spring and looked pretty comfortable there. With Stevens graduated, Iltis being a Senior and only Alex Kelley signed as an incoming freshman at the position as natural centers, he could be a three-year starter at a crucial spot.

Move any player where he will make a bigger impact than he does now. Need to find better safties. Perkins is good vs the run but too slow in passing game. Polk should go back to rb.

so.... who replaces Polk then?

Perkins is not the problem with our defense. We better hope he comes back 100%, because we need him to lead our secondary in 2011.

I think that the biggest position that changed was Dan Hawkins becoming a fan and Jon Embree moving to head coach...

Yes we need him, very young at the corners. Smith played well and hopefully orms will be 100% also. Olatoye?

Right now, I believe they're thinking our starting corners will be Pugh and Bell based off their performances in practice last year. But it's a wide open competition. I'd like to see Olatoye in the mix, too, and I think Moten is costing himself a huge opportunity by asking to try out at QB again. Our true freshmen will get a shot, too.

That position scares the hell out of me heading into this offseason.

Polk struggled a LOT last season, but that doesn't mean he needs to switch positions. He just needs more instruction on how to take on angles. I thought that was his biggest problem - the wrong angle on attacking a guy in coverage or tackling. He is athletic though, so keep teaching him at S. I don't want to see him moved for the same reason that someone else mentioned - don't screw up his college career just because he's struggling at a position. He switched once already to help the team...now teach him how to use his athleticism out there. Brown is a great proven coach.

I see Trea switching to DB. No way Webb switches to FB full-time he looked like a future star at LB. Polk will stay at S he is just too quick to play LB and isn't an instinctive/physical tackler.
