Drescher won the Fall Long Snapping Camp held by Chris Rubio (Nov. 2010).

Scout story

The overall winner of the Nike Fall Camp in TX was long time Rubio Long Snapping student JJ Drescher of Southlake Carroll HS. JJ is a legacy as his brother Justin, University of Colorado & NFL free agent, also went through the Rubio ranks. JJ was nails all day and showed a great deal of confidence and strength. He continues to be a very fluid and consistent long snapper with tremendous size.

Justin's little bro and he's taller? Sign him.

Absolutely, would be an immediate upgrade and lock the position down for 4 years. God knows our kicking game can use all the help it can get.

Buffnik,

I didn't add him to the recruiting index, because I don't know the interest level, I was just fascinated to learn Justin had a younger brother who was a snapper.

I put him in. We should be recruiting him. Let's hope we are.

Let's hope the new staff reads Allbuffs!

Bieniemy made a comment about using the internet as a resource for recruiting.

If I was a coach, I'd use Rivals, Scout and ESPN. Excellent databases of who has given commitments, interviews to get a feel for where they may be leaning, verified measurables on some guys from the sponsored camps, and video footage for initial scouting purposes.

Be kind of silly not to use every tool.

However, you should stick with the tool you know best.

I agree with SB on this one as well. I know you're not really advocating abandoning traditional recruiting, but I'd just like to explicitly state that coaches cannot rely heavily on internet sources. They need to go out there and see kids in person. They need to develop relationships with coaches and kids while doing their own personal evaluation. They need to go to camps and see with their own eyes, making their own opinions. Internet sources can help aid in certain aspects, but it is shouldn't be the primary method. I remember reading when Shannon came on at the U, he was appalled by how coaches were sitting there perusing Rivals and Scout...

problem with this, dyemeduke, is that our new coaches aren't going to have time between now and Feb. to evaluate in person at games, and camps.

Wish they did, but they are going to HAVE to depend on the experts at Allbuffs this year.

Also, exactly. The info is out there - use it. Obviously the primary work has to be visiting the kids, talking to them, going to games and watching tapes, etc. But if they're talking to a kid they think they're solid with, and the kid is telling Rivals that he's still interested in another school, they need to know that.

You do have to talk to the kid, though, as it's easy for a Rivals or Scout "reporter" to ask the questions a certain fan base wants asked, and to wrap the answers a way that they want to hear. Kids will often go along with a reporter just to be friendly --- these are high schoolers, not all media saavy yet.

I asked a kid once why he said he liked "X" school when I knew - KNEW he didn't want to go there - ... he said he didn't want to disappoint the guy.

I hope someone finds J.J. Drescher and finds out what he is thinking. He must have come to Boulder to see Justin play at some point.

Southlake Carroll is an unbelievable powerhouse school. Jump on JJ.....we need to get our special teams play in order, and this is one required component.

In the video I think I only saw one really high snap. The rest were about hip height or so, maybe face.

Alferd, is it easier for kickers to adjust to high snaps than to low ones? This past year we seemed to have a lot of low snaps. Also, how is the velocity in his balls? They seemed a bit slow, but that doesn't seem like a very difficult problem to fix. More reps and more time in the weight room. Justin's velocity was awesome, but then again by the time I took notice he was 21-22 so it's not really far to point out the differences between that and a 17/18 year old.

Consistency is so important. If the punter never knows if the ball will be high, low, left or right, he's worrying about that instead of timing and other critical issues. The ball should come just above the waist/hips, so that the player can drop the ball immediately: doesn't have to pull it up into the air to drop, doesn't have to reach up to secure the ball and then get balanced before he drops it. It should arrive exactly the same spot nearly every time.

We had some twisting, reaching, scooping off the ground this year. Makes it impossible to know if the punter was the bigger problem or if the snaps just made it look that way. On a few of the snaps/bad punts, we really have to give credit to the athleticism and gymnastics it took not to have a safety or blocked punt.

A real question here is what are the odds of getting him to walk-on. With the small number of schollies available and some definite needs that have to be addressed quickly I don't see us using a schollie on a snapper, even if he is a legacy and even if he is or could be very good.

Can he and will he come to CU for a year on his own dime or on academic schollie or combination of both with the idea of earning a schollie next year. If so I would love to see him come.

Iverson did. And J.J. will know better than anyone what the payoff might be, since his older brother is playing pro.

Probably depends more on other schools' needs for a snapper. We gave Justin a schollie because we had a severe need for one that season. Last year we we had Silipo (non-schollie) but needed someone to come in and challenge for the job but be the future. I'm certain Iverson is promised a scholarship, and even if that was the old staff I'd hate for CU to go back on its word to him. He did play as a true freshman, so it is possible to get a 2-year separation between Drescher and Iverson if they RS JJ in 2011.

I don't want to turn Drescher's thread into Iverson's thread, but as with all PWO, you have to earn the scholly. If you don't pan out, you don't pan out.

It's saying "We like you and if you earn the spot, we will try to find a scholly for you." But it was a promise from Riddle/Hawkins to their PWOs, and those guys are in a tough spot with a new staff coming in with their own ideas. The question is, given our limited schollies available: did Iverson's performance warrant a 3-year scholarship?

That's something Embree and the new ST coach need to determine -- and quickly.

Very true, I know it seemed like we got a good kid in Iverson when he came here, but obviously he was a true freshman so it would be a developmental situation.

If you were to look at both of these kids' HS senior tapes (I know you already have) as if they were both prospective commitments for 2011, who would you pick AJ?

Lets hope for a PWO. Kid has skills, has size, is a legacy.

Coming in with a new coaching staff and a clean slate, could potentially be a four year starter if he is good enough.

By the way older brother should be making enough in the NFL to help out his alma mater and little bro at the same time with some tuition funds. NCAA couldn't argue with a brother paying for school I don't think.

And....this guy has likely been snapping a football since he was three....it is the Southlake Carrol way. Give him a scholly, and we are set for four years at this critical position.
