after all the stories we have heard (kickers with dead legs, being the latest example) and all we saw with our own eyes (talent being left on the sidelines in favor of gutty little overachievers), i have come to the conclusion that we have absolutely no ****ing idea what we are going to look like next year, talent-wise.

if smith and solder both go top 10 or, hell, even both round 1, the fact that the staff couldn't even manage a bowl game just reinforces me that they had no ****ing clue what they were doing at all.

i see a lot of predictions about how various players may do under embree, and it is fun to speculate, but when you are comparing to totally ****ing incompetent coaching the last 5 years, it is really hard to judge what may happen.

i do know this... the schedule next year is murderous. if the staff manages to overcome that enough to make it to a bowl and they recruit like CU traditionally has recruited when it is winning (top 25 class minimum), then i will feel like we actually have a staff in place that knows what it is doing.

hawkins makes fairbanks look like knute ****ing rockne. fairbanks sucked, but at least he had an excuse... he was drunk and checked out. ****ing hawkins was, at least up to this last season, actually TRYING to win and failing.

You want this to be a prediction thread about who will come into their own under the new coaches?

I'm expecting quite a few guys to get recognized and see the field in a positive way.

I think Speedy will build on the end of the year and really blow up this year with EB really taking him under his wing. Maybe even making a post season team like the First or Second team Pac 12.

Rong. Speedy has already reached his potential. I'm hoping another RB steps up.

I think the fact that we may have two first rounders says a lot about the individual kids. Good for them for overcoming adversity presented to them in the form of a coaching staff.

My three guys from Denver East should all do better. Thornton showed flashes of getting it, but Hildreth just didn't see the field enough. I am hoping this year will be his chance to show folks he's better than his p.r.

No he hasn't. With all the ****ing tap dancing he was doing? He could have run for 1500-1600 yards if he would just hit the hole.

Or had a better blocking scheme in front of him that left him with holes. This is where the new staff will show how bad our coaching has been the last 5 years.

Given that Embree was a tight end and with his track record of success with that position, I think this unit will be used more effectively next year. I look for them to put up solid numbers with p rich and presumably Clemons demanding attention on the outside.

How'd I miss it?

1/28/2011 - The Buffaloes' leading rusher for the past two seasons was added to the track roster on Thursday and is scheduled to compete in the 60-meter dash on Saturday in the Don Barrett Duals at the Air Force Academy.

But back to the topic:

In the Kansas game (still a sore point with me), Rodney Stewart had 175 rushing and 44 receiving yards.

He had 21 carries in the first half. He was averaging 6.5 yards per carry.

Third & Fourth Quarter combined : Stewart was given 8 carries for 60 yards total.

In the same period of time - the combined third and fourth quarters of the KU game, Cody Hawkins threw about 30 passes (13 or so incomplete or intercepted).

Those 175 yards by Stewart, gained mainly in the first half, would have been Stewart's career high, had he not beat that with a 195-yard game against Kansas State a couple weeks later.

I still wonder two things: how many yards would Steward have against KU if he'd been allowed to run approximately the same in the second half as he did in the first ... and would that decision alone been enough to run out the clock, run up the score, and win the game? He was clearly on pace to have over a 200-yard game if he had 115 yards in the first half, with little resistance by the KU defense.

This analysis of Speedy's KU game and your other post that details the mis-use of Castor and the FG kicking position by the former coaching regime is as painful as it is truthful. Each time AJ's offers a detailed look back on specific situations where coaching got in the way of success at CU is maddening.

There are undoubtedly some more painful insights to be retold about pulling Hansen's red shirt, the Darrell Scott / JFly saga, preparations for Mizzou and Toledo, going for it on fourth down in Ames, multiple losses to Baylor, losing to CSU at Folsom, the systematic distruction of culture and tradition, the media gaffs, and countless untold locker room stories that have yet to be disclosed.

Each tale of woe was painful the first time, and are not any easier to confront now.

I can't wait for signing day and reports of spring practice to help mask the ugliness and sooth the many, many insults that Buff players and Buff Nation have suffered while under the watch of those bumbling boys from Boise.

Seeing as how we're gonna go from scoring 20 points per game to 40, I'm gonna say the entire offense.

If the offense is scoring 40 points per game, the other team will be abandoning their gameplan and start passing like nobody's business to catch up. Our DEs and LB will get all kinds of sacks and whoever plays in the defensive backfield will triple their int stats.

Since we won't be going for it on 4th and 6 from the 45 anytime in the first 3 quarters anymore, our punter will have a lot more punts inside the 20. This should also help our team defense stats since the opposing O will have to go more than 15 yards to get into scoring territory.

Our FG kicker will get fewer attempts because our red zone offense is going to be spectacular, so his stats will be worse. Also, the other team won't be kicking off to us 13 times a game, so we won't lead the nation in kickoff return yards again. Those are the only negatives I can think of. Everyone else will improve.

Someone will step up to fill Solder's shoes at LT: either Ryan Dannewitz, Jack Harris, or Bryce Givens; unless Bakhtiari moves over. I would have said that Givens would really do well under this new staff but he has continued his off-field discipline problems and it might take more time for Embree and Co. to get through to him. Since he was up-and-down under the old staff I figured I would mention him. The other guys are just finally getting a shot at PT after Solder graduates so not really a fair assessment that they will "thrive under the new staff".

We've seen Ryan Miller play a lot over the years and I think he will thrive under the new scheme and the new staff. I suppose there is a chance he moves to Tackle if that is where the new staff feels he is best suited.

The DL is where I would expect the greatest leap in players impact on the game. Nick Kasa and Will Pericak in particular. Not that they were horrible under the old staff but I think they were not used to their best abilities and the defensive scheme didn't help them any. Pericak is my personal favorite to have a breakout year. By all accounts he is a workout warrior, gets good grades, is a very motivated and driven kid who is very loyal to CU. With the new S&C program, an aggressive 4-3 defense, Coach Tui, and Greg Brown calling plays on D; I think they will maximize his potential and we'll see the difference. I seemed to remember the 2009 season when it was rumored that Brown was calling the defense that Pericak really was an impact player compared to when Collins called the D.

With a much less experienced secondary I think the front seven will be very aggressive and those players will respond.

I'm also hoping that Derrick Webb and Doug Rippy take off in a big way, but they are also at a point where you would expect players to take over starting rolls as it is their third year in college.

In regards to the OP, is Goree a guy who might thrive under new leadership/guidance?

Hansen. Who was screwed with more than him?

It's sort of a long list, but he is right at the top. Can you imagine being asked by a reporter why you wanted to red-shirt, and thinking that you were the starter?
How the H3ll do you answer the question, since you either contradict the head coach, or basically say you don't think you're ready to play - when you do?

That group needs to get better. Much better.

I really hope the whole front seven improves because the secondary appears to be the weak link.

agreed. but I was talking about the treatment of them being the same, so I don't really see much changing since Cabral is the lone holdover. Major is the key to the whole unit.

True, although Collins and Foster helped out with the LBs at one time or another. Hope Major can stay healthy.

Rreallllly wish Hawk hadn't messed with Cabral and the LBs.... Don't see how either of those guys would have had anything to contribute over what Cabral was already giving them. Excited to see what Kanavis can bring as the "pass rush specialist" for the OLB/DE's. That has been the one thing we have been missing pretty much everywhere.

Jimmy Smith a first round pick? I'll believe it when I see it on draft day.

Agree with BB, the LB's are very mediocre in my opinion. None of them stand out to me and as a unit they are below average. Dizon is the last guy that truly stood out as a wow player.

Not sold on the defensive coaching staff either but I'm letting it slide for now.

Goree's among the guys who could go either way, imo. Sometimes you have guys who have never produced much all of a sudden get super motivated as seniors because it's the last year they have to play football. Throw in a new staff where everything is fresh and there aren't any opinions already formed about guys.

We'll lose some guys, too, who were just muddling through on scholarship and won't deal well with greater expectations placed on them. Some guys have already checked out.
