Discussion on Scholarship Limits

We have no reason to save scholly's for next year with 23 Seniors on scholarship, we will be able to bring in 25 max, even if we had 30 available.

I am not seeing any other walkons in line right now for a scholarship, so I'd expect that if Embree see's a guy that can help, he will offer up. Bottom line is we got 23 seniors right now and 19 months to lose another 2 guys plus whatever we need to lose before Sept 2011 to get under 85. I don't think it will be a problem as coaching changes always result in a few kids leaving. My bet is that we lose some RB's after spring practice....

You can't actually sign more than 25 guys into a single recruiting class. You might be able to get some early enrollees to back them into the previous year's class. You might be able to convince some to grayshirt so they count against the following year's class. But generally the reason SEC schools sign 30+ is because they take a number of academic risks, stash the worst of the lot in JUCOs of their choosing, and then re-recruit them a couple years later if they're any good on the field and do well enough in the classroom. That wouldn't fly at CU. It's literally an entire conference employing the KSU model.

You can sign any number you want to LOI. But you can only admit 25 per class max and 85 on scholarship at any one time.

So as Buffnik points out, we aren't up against the 25 for the 2011 class, but will be up against the 85 limit in the fall as we currently sit. That's before attrition.

In the 2012 class, we already have 23 slots coming available, plus any further attrition. We will be limited only by the 25 limit next year. We will only be able to have 25 new players in the fall of 2012 period. So saving scholarships from this year to 2012 doesn't really help us in the near term.

At this point, Embree is trying to find players that fill needs without going over the 85 limit come Fall 2011. Who is in fact counted in that 85 limit is currently very fluid between now and the end of Spring ball IMO.

sorry, I'm being lazy and don't want to look into it when I'm pretty sure some of you know the answer off the top of your head. I thought it worked that you can only have 85 players on scholarship, and you are capped to 25 players/class over a three year period. Thus, you can save scholarships from this years class and sign more next season. You can also sign less in 2013 if you want to sign a lot in 2012.

There must be a way around what you wrote, because there are classes larger than 25 all the time. Anyone?

25 is the max class for any particular year. 85 is the max players under scholarship at any single time.

As I posted above, there are ways of manipulating the numbers a bit, but 25 is the max. They'll sign more on NSD, but they won't admit more and have them all count within the same class.

okay...so if 25 is the max, how do Embree and staff oversign next season? They can greyshirt to count against the 2013 class. Are early enrollees though eligible to be counted against this year's class? I don't think that's the case, because Katoa was part of his class if I recall correctly. So, is the only way to overesign by greyshirting towards the following year's class?

Thanks buffaholic for the correction and Buffnik for the clarification...the things I learn at work..... ... ...speaking of which...

You can count people toward the previous year's class if you can get them to enroll early. For instance, CU could choose to count Alex Lewis and Brent Burnette toward the 2010 class if we wanted to.

But I don't believe we did because Embree wanted them to be his guys and part of the 2011 class. That means we have 19 guys signed to the 2011 class.

As it stands now, we're 1 over the 85 limit, so some attrition is expected (or has happened already and we just don't know about it yet).

The senior class is 23 guys. Assuming we just need to replace those guys, we only need to sign 23 next year and we're at the 85 limit.

However, let's assume that we have some attrition and need to sign 28 guys to get up to 85. Since we only signed 19 in 2011, we can have as many as 6 2012 guys enroll in January and count as 2011 signees. Theoretically, that makes it possible for us to sign 31 next year if we have a lot of attrition and need that many guys.

As far as grayshirts, there may also be the case that we find some sleeper prospects late in the process that we really love but know will need some time to develop (no way they'd play as freshmen in 2012). We may then ask some of these guys to delay their enrollment until the following January. We can then count them into the 2013 class or the 2012 class if our number for 2012 ended up below 25.

I'll stop now before it gets too confusing and I start rambling.

You can read some more in Stoudt's Recruitipedia.

Eric Richter is moving from Guard to DT. Hopefully we will be able to get some use out of him on that side of the ball with his strength.

That was more than on off-the-cuff suggestion on the Rivals board?

Edit: I like this move, btw. Richter could be a very solid NT in a 3-4 defense.
