Embree: Physical nature exposes some Buffs

Nick Kasa may have a torn mcl or something of the sort. He got x-rays after aggravating it during the first day of pads today at practice.

I disagree. I think this tough approach is drastically needed. In the past couple of articles I've read in the camera all of our big key guys seem to really be buying into it. I've read quotes from Tyler Hansen, Tony Clemons, Jon Major and Rodney Stewart all of which said they like the new style and think its "much more professional". Don't get me wrong, there will be some guys who might quit but I wouldn't put it past 3 or 4. Look at the quote regarding Forrest West. He obviously has responded well.

These guys are all type A personalities and from my experience in combat arms, the tough demanding style works best for this type of person, especially when you are coming into a situation where the unit's performance is sub par. Whenever you are a new leader, the first thing most of your guys will do will be to test your limits to see what they can and can't get away with. You have to set the standard from the beginning and not deviate from it. If you deviate or fold, then you will lose all the respect from your men. The good thing about this approach is that both Embo and EB are also handing out praise when the players do something well. If it was all negative and no positive I would be a little concerned but this is not the case as even the Daily Camera writers have said how both coaches are quick to praise when our players do something right.

Sure, because the touchy feely lets all hold hands and be friends approach has worked so well over the past five years.

This team is soft. They aren't used to putting out maximum effort all the time. How many times over the past few years have we seen the Buffs get beat because they had a quarter or a half in a game in which they got dominated. On the other hand how few times did we see the Buffs go out and just step on somebody and leave no doubt about who was going to win the game.

Are we going to lose some players, no question. Any time you have a coaching change you lose some players because guys just aren't as committed to the new coach as they were to the old or guys who who didn't have the commitment to the game itself get exposed. When you have a staff like this one that makes such an utter change in expectations and culture you are bound to get more guys admit the they just don't want to do what it takes to be part of it. Truth is that most of the time these guys aren't the ones who you were going to be able to count on making a positive difference anyways.

This is a program that needs rebuilding. This doesn't mean just schemes and new players. It means a new way of thinking. The coaches right now are establishing a new set of expectations for the players and themselves. Once they have that established in everyones minds then they can back off a little but for right now alienating a few players is not a problem, it is a neccessity to establish that the old is gone and the new is here.

Ya this.

The players that dont wanna play shouldn't. Most will recognize that this is what is expected at a pro level and will embrace it. This mentality and intensity will be ingrained in them by 4/9 that way the players keep it up themselves over the summer when the coaches can't be with them. They all seem to love blacken which is a good thing and all of the key players are really liking this new brand of football. I like the idea of having a handful of run plays that we do over and over and over again. In a game situation when one of those is called the offense will have extreme confidence in them and the execution will be almost perfect each time.

I can't wait till the spring game.

He will alienate some players, but I honestly do not worry about it. The intensity in practices needs to improve.

I think where Embree will need to find more of a middle ground is in the games. Somewhere between Mike Stoops and Dan Hawkins will suffice.

I would have to agree with the others onthis one. Hawk had developed what looked like from the outside a culture of softness where losing was OK, as long as you tried. If some on the current roster prefer that, maybe their leaving isn't such a bad thing.

i expect that's the intent, to a degree. i generally assign written work due the first Friday or Thursday of a new class for that same reason. a class of 45 will drop to 38 or so before the class even ends. kids dropping on-line in class.

If you can't deal with pressure cooker practices, you can't be trusted when the game is on the line.

I am 100% in support of Embree's approach.

as i recall, reading articles about when Stoops took over from Blake.....half the team was puking in trashcans at the end of the first few practices "warmup" the new S&C guy had Blake's players doing. after ATM waxed OU one of the Blake years, i also remember RC Slocum commenting that he had recruited a lot of the guys on OU's roster and thought they were in better shape in HS. sometimes, more work is what it takes.

while i do know for a fact that Hawk's practices were enthusiastic and such, but we WERE playing egg toss and stuff. we were in shorts 2 days a week during the season. my old gf lived in fam housing, and i saw practice. these guys are not used to hitting. and, while it was a nice theory for the post-Walsh, Shanahan types....not sure not hitting at the college level makes for physical Saturdays. Hawk didn't disprove this.
