QB Recruiting - Is Hirschman the future?

First one to commit would be happy with any of the 4 QB.

1. Bart Houston
2. Shane Dillon
3. Cyler Miles
4. Travis Wilson

Looks like we will take one QB in this class, and then look to add QB through the Juco ranks if there is a need for depth.

The only problem with all this is that he seems in little rush to make a decision. We cannot afford to be left out in the QB sweepstakes and put all our resources toward Dillon.

True, but of the 4 who else has seemed extremely interested in CU? We can't afford to wait to long either and let them all get away. People around here want Miles, however I haven't read anything that has him leaning towards CU at this point. Its not a good situation to be in.

Bart Houston is going to visit soon (or at least that was the plan). We'll know more after that visit. But honestly, we are not in a good spot right now overall.

I agree, the QB situation is bad, very bad. It looks like NH might be able to fill the gap for a year but I would rather not have to count on it. Either we end up with the first guy to verbal, or we don't get any of the 4 this off-season, which would be awful. Hopefully Houston enjoys his trip as much as Dillon did.

I disagree we are in a good situation in regards to QB.

Hirschman showed promised in the spring game, and will only get better

Dorman is going to develop into a starter one day, Sherer will coach him up.

All we need is one guy in this class, and most pro-style QB will choose CU, becaue they get to work with one of the best QB coaches in football. I will take either Dillon or Houston. That will give 3 good QB in the system in 2012, that is a good situation.

In a bad situation because behind TH we don't have anyone with D1 starting experience. So everyone besides TH is an unknown.

That's the situation pretty much everywhere in college football (or worse).

True I guess based on what I have heard about spring ball this year I am just not confident in our backups at all

What u have heard is not painting a good picture. Why don't you go and watch the spring game on cubuffs.com. Hirschman played really well, his mechanics has improved, he is going to be the starter in 2012 and i am confident with time with Rip Scherer as QB coach, Hirschman is going to be better than Hansen.

around here again, even if its over the top. last offseason was lame cept for pac12 stuff.

When Hischman becomes a senior, and he has about 2 or 3 years of playing experience, he is going to be better than Hansen, bookmark this thread.

I like Hansen, but that isn't really saying much.

Your optimism is awesome! We have a great QB situation because Hirschman looked ok in the spring game and Dorman, who had 0 other offers, is going to be a starter? I love it.

Yes i am optimistic, but i have good reason to be. Comparing Hirshman performance from last year spring ball to this year spring ball. You will see remarkable improvements in his footwork, you can see his confidence growing. Hirschman has talent, he can sling it, all he has to do is continue to work on his mechanics and the playbook, and i have no doubt Hirschman is going to be a very good QB. And he will be more pro ready than the likes of Tim Tebow, Cam Newton coming out of College. I also like what i see from Stevie Dorman. Big strong athletic QB that can make all the throws.

I am with the band, I was there lol. NH did look good at the Spring Game but that was one good out of the rest of the spring so I still am skeptical

Maybe I'm alone, but I thought Hirschmann looked ok at best in the spring game. He threw some floaters and at least one in the dirt. He's got a long way to go IMO, but fortunately has another year to get there - but we gotta hope Hansen doesn't get hurt. Depending on Hirsch at this point is a scary thought. Ideally we'd have a junior with experience in the offense to step in, but it is what it is. Not a good situation at all.

Hirschman seems to be a gamer. He just needs to pull it together so that he's in total command of the offense, has the confidence of his teammates, and can take on a leadership role. He'll also continue to improve mechanics and footwork, which should result in a quicker drop & release with better and more consistent accuracy. Lots of potential there and he does seem like the kind of guy who would step up if thrown into the fire.

That said, it is essential that we sign a quality QB this cycle. Can't have gaps and must have competition + depth.

I have no problem with NH becoming our starter if he proves that he can handle it, nothing against the kid, I just feel a talent like Dillon or Gross or Miles or Houston or any of the assortment of QB's we have been in contact with would either come in and push for the job outright or push NH to make him better. The QB's we are looking at have some very good talent already, and the best part is they can be made even better with our coaches. I am not trying to rip on NH because who knows he could grow and develop a ton in this offense during the season, but from what I have seen he is not ready as it stands right now.

There is no reason whatsoever to NOT recruit talent... every year. I don't think we stop looking for the best fit for the program at any position. If the recruited talent doesn't win the competition with the resident talent, they sit until they can. If the resident talent can't compete w/ the recruits... the incumbent sits. Easy actually, as a concept; coaches must develop talent and make the correct judgment calls. I don't really understand why this is even a real conversation at this point. What am I missing? We will know about NH when it is time to know about him.

Got off season?

a big year from TH would go a long way in making QB at CU a desirable, recruitable position again. for the last several years there's been the Cody factor and finishing last in the conference in total O.....right now we are an unknown on O. however, some big numbers out of TH, PRich, Clemons, and Speedy could give us something tangible to sell to recruits.

So the reason that we are in bad shape at QB is because nobody on the roster behind TH has D1 experience, but the solution is to bring in a highly regarded high schooler?

not necessarily. I know I said that earlier but as nik pointed out thats the case at almost every school. The problem is that I just havent seen "it" from NH

The issue is not Hansen or even Hirschmann. Whoever gets recruited this year is likely to redshirt next year anyways and be a RS Frosh the following year. The problem is that even if Hirschmann turns out to be excellent we are one hit away from finding out what is behind him. With the limited number of games each year in college football you can't write off 3-4 games waiting for your starting QB to return from injury. You also have to be sure that you have a quality player ready to go in a couple of years and depth behind him.

Getting at least one solid QB prospect this year is critical, two would be better. Once some depth is present then one per year would be the norm but right now their is room for more.

Fair enough. And being on out of state guy, I haven't seen any of the spring practices/scrimmages, so you probably have better intel than I do. Hopefully, TH can stay healthy this year; and if we're giving CSU or WSU a good old fashioned beatdown, hopefully we can get Hirsch some tick.

I never knew Tyler Hansen was the standard for college QBs now. Learn something new every day.

He isn't by any means however I am confident he is the best we have right now.

Big bang is hanging on his hat on NH being better than Tyler Hansen. Love that standard.

I guess I expect much more out of the QBs going forward if we are going to be any good. If I have learned anything from Allbuffs over the last five years, our QBs are really good. Too bad it never translates to the football field.

The QB situation is a major question mark going forward. Hansen is the only guy on the roster I have confidence in, and even then, I don't expect him to be a star. No one seems willing to say it, but the coaches whiffed when they signed Brent Burnette. He is simply taking up a roster spot at this point.

Ya I am with you. I think TH will be solid as a starter. I dont see him doing anything spectacular, and same with NH. I am hoping Dorman comes in and is an upgrade over the two and that we get a good qb in here that is a step up over him. All I am hoping for and counting on is solid play from the QB position meaning few sacks and few turnovers.

Yeah, I thought we'd at least get a guy with experience that could come in and challenge Hansen, but all I remember from the spring game is Burnette coming in and immediately tossing a pretty bad INT. It's not fair to judge him on one play, but I haven't heard much here to recommend his play at other times this spring. This is a position that can only be improved over time, which I'm willing to give as long as we see immediate improvement in basic football smarts on the field next year. A couple of upsets would help, too.
