This should make you mad. What is SI's beef with CU?

stewart mandel is not a believer. Prove him wrong is all Embree can do.

Also, Mandel graded the Hawk hire as an A. So I consider this good news.

Bah - I'm not angry about that. The hire, for those who haven't taken a little time to digest it and listen to Embree, should be a head scratcher. I care a lot more about what they will say about the hire in another 5 years than I care about what they say about it now. Remember, Hawk was a "home run" hire. That turned out great.

Yep. If Embree is as much of a failure as Hawk was a home run then I think we will all be happy.

Mad at whom? CU? or SI?

I think you know where I fall on the "whom." I guess I don't see a uniform standard here given the fact the Stanford guy is a "Homer" and they gave him an A. Why? Because he was Harbaugh's coordinator? Do you really think Harbaugh let someone else run the O? That said, I am an unabashed "homer" myself and have no objectivity when it comes to my belief and expectations regarding Embo's tenure. Next year will be rough but it will get progressively better after that. I expect a 8-10 win season in year 2 following another 4-5 win season next year. In year-3 I believe we will contend for the P12 South.

So, Frank, to answer you question directly, . . . I say FU SI!!!

It isn't a totally invalid take. We all want to get behind Coach Embree, and we should, but the other coaches on that list have either extensive head coaching experience or big time collegiate coordinator jobs. CU hired a position coach from the NFL to be its head football coach. Now, I know it isn't that simple to us, but on the national level that is how it is viewed. Embree having gone to CU only makes the situation worse to the national perspective if people view it as nobody else wanted the job so they had to hire one of their own.

Like I say, it isn't that simple, and I truly hope that Coach Embree has the greatest of success to prove SI wrong on this. However when you look solely at the resumes of the new head coaches on the BCS level, frankly Coach Embree's is the weakest of the bunch.

tend to agree here. though, do seem a little harsh. the "A" hires seem suspect to me. anybody but Bear Bryant or Darrel Royal to Indiana can't be an A.

from a national perspective, JE is not well known. and, i'm cautiously optimistic but i don't think it's a "done deal" we are gonna be a perennial top 10 type team for a significant run....

Exactly...Pretty much the equivalent that saying every 5* recruit is a sure-fire NFL candidate, simply by what they've done with their previous squad...

Taken by itself in a vacuum, I would agree. But when you compare it to the Stanford hire which they grade at an A, despite the fact that he's only 38 and also has no head coaching experience, that invalidates much of what they say, IMO.

But at the end of the day, it's up to Embo to get out there and win games.

Hard to give much credibility to the man who thought the Rich Rodriguez and Dan Hawkins hires were brilliant. He's a frontrunner. Opinion is on the level of an average fan's, not an insider.

fwiw, Coordinator experience is absolutely not correlated with success as a head coach. Especially offensive or defensive coordinator. Special Teams Coordinator is actually a better training background because the guy works with the entire team. I'll take Embree's background of having coached offense (different positions and passing game coordinator), special teams (including kickers as a position coach) and defense over that of many coordinators. Plus, he's also started and run a charitable booster donor organization connected to the CU football program so he's got important experience in that area where a lot of new HCs get bogged down.

I agree that Embo has a lot to prove, but I'd hire him over a lot of coaches on that list. Jerry Kill? Who the **** is that?

I could care less. Embree has exceeded my expectations so far since he has been here...which doesn't mean a lot until they start playing games.

**** mandel!

i am fine with folks questioning the hire for all the reasons that have been regurgitated, but, compared to some of those other 10 hires, i have a hard time believing that embree is the worst one. that guy at stanford is no magic-maker.

assholes.

I have a hard time getting angry about what some random columnist writes about a coaching hire six months before the guy's first game.

i wasn't angry until i opened the link. he's got embree listed 11th out of 11. therefore, he must be castigated. it is the natural order of the innerwebz. try to keep up.
