Chip Brown says Texas counts for 3, which is why the Big 12 had trademark the name Big 14 years ago.
Meh. It doesn't really have a choice if it wants to maintain its brand and the goodwill associated with it. Certainly, if there wasn't already a BIG 10, the BIG 12 would have changed its name, but it's kinda stuck now. Would've been smarter not to go with a BIG # to begin with.

...as was Big 8...as was Southwest Conference, but everybody sure as **** dropped those names (which had 40 and 82 years of history behind them respectively) when the number and geography no longer applied to those leagues. Those were the banners under which a lot more competition was held and significantly more national championships were attained under.
The Big 10 at least has 115 years of branding as the Big 10 to fall back on as the excuse for retaining their name. The Big 12 has only 15 years of marketing and branding behind it. Don't try to represent that the Big 12's history is comparable to that of the Big 10 Mr. Beebe, at least not with a straight face. 15 years is nothing to sneeze at, but if the Pac-10 can change to the Pac-12 to accurately reflect the number of teams it represents, you can certainly pick a new name for your league...so sorry the name you want is trademarked.

I agree they are probably looking to add. However, if UT gets paid the most (and controls the league), ATM and OU get the second biggest slices and the rest are relegated to the third tier, would the new ones get fourth tier treatment? I am sure there are plenty of non-BCS schools that would want to join the Big 12, but man that would be an iffy proposition. Fourth class citizen in a dying league.
I wonder if TCU would think about joining them. A DFW school would be a good addition. (even though I would love to see the Big 12 go down in flames). A Houston or SA school would be good as well, but there aren't any good candidates in those cities.
Texas State in San Marcos is about to join the WAC, that school has about 35,000 kids, is undergoing a major facilities upgrade, and is 30 min from Austin (well within Deloss's control).
If, for instance, they added Memphis and CSU (just as an example), the payouts to those two schools would immediately quadruple. Most non BCS schools would gratefully accept fourth class citizenship in the Big 12 for that kind of bump in revenues.
I doubt TCU would be interested in being UT's lapdog. They just got a big bump in revenues from joining the Big East. If the Big 12 expands, I suspect it would be outside the state of Texas. They need more televisions. Memphis, Tulane, UNM, CSU, Air Force, BYU would all be possibilities, IMO. None add substantially, but would bring some television sets that they don't already have.
I dont' see them expanding outside of Texas. That would be the smart thing to do - that's what Larry Scott would do. The Big 12 has Dan Beebe at the helm... :doh:
Excellent point. You're absolutely correct. Beebe (re: Dodds/Mack) would probably prefer to add North Texas and UT-San Antonio so they can get the championship game and not really have to pay anything more for it. Please accept my apologies for thinking rationally.
Apology accepted. You keep your rational thoughts to your PAC-12 conference, full of nerdy academic excellence and intelligence.
Living down here so long has allowed their ways of thinking to seep into my brain. There is a little voice in my head with deep Texas accent that says: "to get to the champ-yun-ship, we need-a add some other state in-stit-u-shuns. we still keep the money in the UT system and dont have to worry about losing to any competitive teams."
I know a ton of people in Austin who were very excited about the new Big 12 because it is less competitive and there is no longer a championship game to have to win to get to the title. They don't care about the quality of the games they see at all, they just care about getting 12 W's. I couldn't disagree with them more.
