He is transfering from florida 1 yr after leaving cal. Anyone know what his deal is or is he just one of those players who doesnt love football.

Best I can remember, he spent his final year of high school with extended family in Aurora, CO. Word was that there were a lot of bad influences back in Oakland he wanted/needed to get away from.

A 2010 class recruit, he was then going to attend Notre Dame, but after the coaching change there he opened things up and was convinced by Cal that he should come back home for college (despite a lot of negative comments he'd previously made about Cal and going back).

He did not adjust well with being back in the Oakland area and realized it was a mistake. Not sure what all was going on, but when he decided to transfer to Florida in July 2010 (after signing with Cal in February 2010) he was quoted as saying, "I would like to thank everyone who has been supportive of me through my crazy mental episodes. A special thank you to my mother and father who have supported me no matter what. I love you both. God has granted me a second chance. A chance I cannot mess up. With that said. Go Gators. Thank You to everyone and all the coaches who showed their interest in me."

He redshirted at Florida under NCAA transfer rules, then was charged by police in January with misdemeanor marijuana possession. He's under a deferred prosecution agreement, so he needs to avoid another run-in with the law or that will come back to bite him. The reasons given for the transfer from Florida, according to Coach Muschamp, are that his family wanted him closer to home.

Talent-wise, they thought very highly of him in Florida. They were expecting him to be a playmaker as a RS-Freshman as an edge rusher.

CU would have to gauge whether "closer to family" could mean back in Colorado where he didn't have any personal problems. But he did complain a bit about the weather (which made his initial verbal to Notre Dame a surprise to a lot of us who follow recruiting closely). If he'd like to come here, the coaches would have to decide whether he's a good fit for the culture being built. I don't think the talent's in question.

Here's a recent photo of Martin (I think from the spring game):

Just read some stuff saying that he absolutely killed it in the spring and the issue is that Muschamp gave the job to Ronald Powell regardless. Martin doesn't want to be forced to sit for two years behind a sophomore who was the #1 prospect in the country.

If the kid is willing to come to CU, let him come here. To my knowledge, he hasn't done anything like vandalize a lockerroom or anything. If he has talent and a willingness to bring it, get him in here. We need all the help we can get.

I can't imagine saying "Gee, we have too many athletes rushing the passer. No thanks." Especially when we haven't had a winning season since 2005.

I thought he was in Grand Junction when he played his senior year? And Jens, the thread (just recruting last year--not sure it even metions Florida at all-- stopped when he signed with Cal) didn't give an indication as to the Cal Florida and leaving Florida thing, which is what I was asking about. Buffnik, on the other hand, explained everything beautifully. I better go rep him.

Grandview in Aurora.

I would think he can get better weed in Boulder than Gainesville...

Don't forget he enrolled at Cal first (and is from Oakland). So clearly that isn't as much of a determining factor as his rap sheet would lead us to believe...

It would appear that this kid is incredibly physically gifted and incredibly immature. I would not be surprised if he goes to a JC for a year and then does a year at a BCS program (I THINK he's now lost 2 years of eligibility with two transfers, but I'm not positive).

forgive me because i'm poker drunk, but i don't believe he was penalized for leaving cal before attending classes.

He enrolled at Cal, so he lost a year. I believe that last year, which he was required to sit out as a transfer, was considered his redshirt year. Now that he's transferring again, he'll lose another.

That article doesn't really say if that happened though. If he did lose eligibility then that was a bad decision to enroll in those summer courses. Kid seems snake bitten.

As Martin had already enrolled for summer classes at Cal, his status for the 2010 season remains unknown.

At this point, it doesn't really matter if he lost eligibility due to enrolling @ Cal (and he definitely did)- players have 5 years to play 4 seasons and he was enrolled but didn't play at Florida last year. He will have to sit out a year to transfer to a D1 school no matter what and then have 3 years left to play 3 seasons of football. He could also enroll in a CC and play for one year, then transfer back to a D1 school so then he wouldn't miss a year of competition. Another thing- he could still turn pro three years after graduating high school, and if he is as good as reported, he may very well look into that, especially since it seems he has some problems with the whole college thing. So a D1 school that looks at him could be looking at just one year on the field. I think Embree would have to sit down with him and decide whether it's worth the risk because there are some serious red flags. If Embree takes that risk and tries to figure out a way to get Martin's head screwed on straight, it could be really good for CM and CU in the end.

As for summer classes at Cal - the 'Summer Bridge' program is a required program to get kids up to speed on academics. One great thing is that students are around campus early in a more structured environment and can participate in voluntary player organized summer workouts. If you look at the violations that Boise St football was hit with (essentially they were having 'voluntary' summer workouts where soon to be freshman were crashing on current player's couches... which was the horrible 'impermissible benefit' of free housing), I'm not sure why more programs wouldn't do some kind of summer program for both academic and competitive reasons. First semester at school is a hard transition for anyone, and doing some summer work would take some pressure off athletes in the fall, especially considering the amount of time devoted to football.

I don't know the kid, but from the sounds of things like; he's "trying to avoid bad influences", blah blah blah. Maybe the person at fault all along was him.

He will have to sit out the 2011 season and will have to 3 to play 3. If he is interested in Colorado then Embree needs to sit down with him and see if he fits into what they are trying to build in Boulder. I do not see anything worse than what happened with Paul Richardson...

Some kids just "grow up" later than others as well. If he wants to be a Buff and Embree is convinced that he is ready to do what it takes to be a contributor it is hard to argue with the raw talent.

As long as he promises not to sing, and leaves Gwyneth Paltrow in London, i'm cool with him coming to CU.
