BB, question about Auburn

Unleash Hell

Saw Phil Steele had them last in the SEC west. I too think the will have a huge dropoff from last year, afterall they lose their star on both sides of the ball, but last in the SEC west seems like a steep dropoff. Behind Ole Miss and Miss st..

Your thoughts on the Tigers this year?

I'm also eager to hear what BB has to say. But there was a lot of chatter that last year's team had .500 SEC talent if it weren't for Cam Newton.

I think getting to a bowl game is going to be a struggle. Last year's offense carried the team and Cam Newton is gone, along with an experienced offensive line (graduated four starters). The talent at RB and WR is very good, and I have all the respect in the world for Gus Malzahn, but QB and OL are major question marks.

The defense is still a liability, especially minus Fairley. The secondary was really bad most of the time (108th in pass defense last season) and I do not expect that to change much in 2011. The really talented players on defense are a year away from making a major impact-I think there are 6-7 sophomores that will be starters on that side of the ball this season.

Most importantly, the schedule does not break the way it did in 2010. Auburn only played four road games last season and the really tough games outside of Bama were all at home. That changes for 2011. Road games at Clemson, South Carolina, Arkansas, LSU, and Georgia. Then there are tough home games against Bama and Mississippi State. Plus LSU and Bama are going to be really good-top 5 good. Finally, just about every break went our way in 2010 so I cannot see it happening two years in a row.

My best guess is Auburn and Ole Miss fighting it out 5th/6th in the division. If you are looking for a darkhorse in that division, watch out for Mississippi State.

I know Ole Miss tends to recruit better than their record ever indicates, and Dan Mullen is pulling off unthinkable upsets at MSU, but Auburn for last? It may speak to outstanding competition in their own division (which is true), but that's also a total blast to Gene Chizik's coaching ability, which I think deserves a little credit.

minus last year with Cam Newton, Gene Chiziks headcoaching record is 13-24

Chizik's only there because he was willing to play ball with the boosters who wanted to buy wins. Malzahn's the brains on the Auburn coaching staff.

Malzahn and Grimes are the best coaches on the Auburn staff, but I think Chizik is pretty solid too. I think even he would tell you that taking the ISU gig was a mistake in hindsight.

Overall, the defensive assistants pretty underwhelming and it starts at the top with a mediocre DC in Ted Roof.

So I asked an Auburn friend of mine on FB the same question and he thinks Auburn finishes 3rd and beats Alabama.

Hope it turns out that way, but I doubt it. If Bama gets anything out of the QB position, they are going to be in the BCS championship game IMO.

I agree with you. Not because of talent, but because of coaching. Give Saban LSU's roster this year and I think they might win every game by double digits.

Bama will tear Auburn a new one this fall while Auburn goes 5-7 without Newton and Bama will be in the national title game vs OU.

****, he pretty much has that same roster at Bama

No doubt. Both teams are stacked. LSU has better WRs while Bama has better LBs/DBs, along with the best overall player in Trent Richardson. The rest of the positions probably break pretty even.

Grandpa on my mom's side went there for a couple years before enlisting and my dad got his master's there. My parents lived there for 5-6 years after he graduated before moving out to Colorado too. My mom never went to college so Auburn has always been her team. Most of my mom's side of the family still lives in Alabama, though they are mostly Bama fans.

Part of being a good coach is getting good assistants to come work for you. He's been able to do that and last decade was DC for two undefeated teams. ISU is ISU. Left too quickly before we can judge if he was going equal what Dan McCarney did there or even what Paul Rhoads may be able to do there in the next few years. But I think he and staff will continue to recruit and coach talent that keeps them from finishing last in anything. Until the NCAA has their say.

In addition to everything that's already been pointed out, I read where AU loses 31 lettermen from last year, which is among the most in the nation (if not the most).
