Dear CU Buff Faithful,

I read a detailed report on Yahoo! Sports today regarding a scout who
has been able to parlay his relationships with elite Texas RBs into a
small business that's now over before it starts. This story is not
uncommon. We are all familiar with the supposed excesses of college
sports. It goes back a long time. In the not so distant past, our
own alma mater, "Dear Old CU," played this game. I was at CU when we
had some very good teams -- recruits and players were always serviced
by the hottest talent in Boulder. We'd be kidding ourselves if we
thought that the players on those teams didn't receive special benefits.

To recruit and win at the highest levels in college football, you will
have to firmly bend the rules. Elite players and/or their parents
have received cash handshakes all along the way. Elite players have
had the finest hotties give it up ever since they were 14-15 years
old. They see the lavish lifestyles led by their idols on TV and
online. They want their piece.

Kids from CO are no different. Have you been to a high school
recently? Girls don't look the same as they did when I was in school.
They expect hotter versions when they get to college. I've had the
pleasure to visit some of the campuses that have our nation's best
football team. Nearly without exception (Stanford is the lone
exception), the women are unbelievable. The difference between CU and
those places? The girls are (no longer) being used to recruit. We as
boosters (no longer) make sure that players are never lonely. We as
boosters (no longer) make sure that players are never without "walking
around money."

Yes, our coaches are awesome. Yes, they will eventually find and
coach the kids up to be excellent football players.

One day, the program is going to have to ask itself a big question:
are we willing to (again) join the dark side? Are our coaches willing
to look the other way when we boosters buy a table of players meals on
Pearl Street? Are our coaches willing to look the other way when we
boosters hand over $100K to a RB who runs with crazy power and speed?
Are our coaches willing to employ street level adults who are able to
convince a kid to move states to be eligible for his scholarship? Are
the coaches willing to call in favors to get minor issues like parking
tickets forgotten in the circular file?

It's certain that not EVERY kid signs for the wrong reason at a great
school. But, when kids see the program winning and all the guys are
walking around with strong arm candy, saying no is really difficult.
Buff nation: before we bitch and moan about our current recruiting
class six months before recruiting season is over, let's also consider
the price of success in today's college football game.

So you are blaming the sluts for our lack of success instead of Dan Hawkins.... This might be a fun bandwagon to join.

:bang:

Dan Hawkins tried and failed to "do things the right way." It doesn't hurt that he was a terrible coach who made a disastrous decision to start his own kid. In order to win, you have to have the best players and good coaches. The best players do not want to go unless they get theirs.

I've read a lot of bitching and complaining about recruiting in July. In looking at the landscape of college football, I only see the schools who are willing to pony up cash, girls, and cars as the ones who are getting the best players.

Are we as boosters willing to walk down this path to see our team win? It's a big question. It's not one we should answer lightly.

That's right. And, without the prospect of going to a bowl for two years because of illegal benefits given to a former player, their recruiting classes run circles around ours. The QBs on their bench are better than any we have on scholarship.

From this thread, it's clear that y'all think that we have a shot to recruit and win without getting dirty. That is an impossibility in today's day and age of college football. Go down the list of big time programs. They intensely bend the rules and often break them. When we were big time, we intensely bent the rules to get the best players available.

SC has 4 and 5 stars around them like we have 1 and 2 stars around us.

Those kids can go anywhere they please and yet they stay home to go to USC. Why?
The stone cold best kids in CO almost always choose to go elsewhere. Some of them are especially inclined to go to programs who have had recent suspicions of seedy activity like Auburn and Oregon. Why?

Let the excuses about location stop. Either we get our hands dirty or we don't. If we want to be big time, we are going to have to play like the big boys do.

based on your original post, auburn and oregon have the hottest chicks and the coolest cars.

so, do you think our recruiting priorities should move in that direction? maybe we should be recruiting miami beach/rio de jeneiro/sydney and detroit/germany/italy?

I know you don't want to take me seriously, which is fine because I'll answer your questions pretending like you have a point.

Auburn had a QB whose father admitted that he asked for over $100K to hand over his son. Somehow his son did not know about the money. Somehow Auburn did not engage in a pay for play even though his father demanded that they get paid to have his son sign out of Blinn CC.

Oregon is currently under investigation. The door is just beginning to open. If they're willing to authorize a payment of $25K in moments to a guy who delivered James and Seastrunk, the money flows freely.

And yes, the ladies in Eugene and Auburn are prime time.

What should I recruiting priorities be? They should continue as they are going. Recruiting at CU will progress slowly but surely with our current staff. There will come a time with elite level recruits when we'll have to answer some important questions about how much we want to win. As boosters, we will play a role in determining the fate of our team via the level of support that we provide the program.

Perhaps we should decide now if we are willing to play the game or if we are okay simply being above average. Perhaps we shouldn't be so naive about our own program's past indiscretions when we were at the top.

Are you a cop? Cause you have to tell me if you're a cop.

Funny, but an urban myth. Has the Pac 12 instituted some sort of Narc squad to try to clean things up...odd timing for this post to show up today from a brand new poster. Lol. Maybe one of our new opponents is doing some online trolling/snooping?
