2 man race for punter

Major surprise here. It looked like he was running with the 1's. Embree trying to force all Hawkins players out or what?

i hope that isnt the case here. That was one of Dan's mistakes, I'd hate to see Jon make it.

That said anyone who had to work with the riddler probably needs a red-shirt year to recover. Kent Riddle = metaphoric ACL tear

Let's not go that direction. It looks to me that Embree is having an open competition. Obi and Rippy were both Hawkins recruits and are looking as likely backups turned starters. Grossnickel struggled last year and practice reports have indicated that he nails a 50 yarder then shanks the next one. I'd take the guy who consistently gets 40 yards over that.

Edit...those are your frickin practice reports I'm quoting.

Hopefully Zach considers this, takes the redshirt year and works with a kicking specialist to improve on both his punting and PK game, and the mental side of it as well. Great to have a local guy who wants to be a Buff. Would love to see him come back and battle Darragh in next year's camp and take the gig if he proves himself.

Just found out that there was a "Punt off" for second place at afternoon practice today. I was told they both did pretty bad. D is just gonna keep doin his thing and the job will be his. Brundage just flat out cant boot it as far as him.

grossnickel fumbled a snap on one of the first goal line punt attempts. Embo then said that one would be eliminated today. grossnickel then boomed all of his punts. Distance, height, spiral, turning the punt over. He was by far the best. He has a freakin leg.

 Ok, now I'm confused.

This makes it sound like Ringo was wrong and Grossnickel is actually running first team and O'Neill and Brundage are punting off for second team.

this couldnt be further from the truth. what about the next punt grossnickle had where he shanked it and yelled "S***" after?? doesnt sound like a good reaction to me. and whatt about darragh punt that turned over and went out at the 2 yard line and P rich loved it.
Gross punted terribly today. his last two punt where decent. thats him MO. INCONSISTENCY. darragh didnt have a bad punt all day. and a punter with 4.5 4.4 speed, are you kidding me? no brainer. D is flat out better

I've watched the punters now at several practices closely and I'm not surprised by this selection. Here is my thoughts fwiw:

-Embree is looking at a couple things us fans might be missing.

1. Getting the punt off in the allotted time, every time. He will not tolerate blocked punts.
2. consistency. 3 nice 45 yarders, are completely negated by a 15 yard shank.
3. where they are now and where they were at 1 and 2 years ago.
4. Overall -

As for 1 above, I don't have a stopwatch and I have no idea.

Grossnickel: 3rd year punting at CU. I think Embree saw way too many shanks and inconsistencies from his performance last year. His progress as a Punter (I think he was more accomplished coming in as a kicker being a soccer player) has been slow. Year 3 here. He was a lot better last year than as a redshirt, but he wasn't nearly consistent enough. More progress this year, but not enough.

O'Neil: Little experience as a punter. Fantastic athlete (this kid was one of the best local basketball players I watched, and I hear he was just as good at soccer). Kid didn't look that good to me in the spring but on day 1 of fall camp, I was pretty knocked back by how far he had come. I think he's been more consistent than Grossnickel, with less bad kicks. Grossnickel's best punts seem a bit higher and deeper than O'Neil's, but that is difficult to tell as we are always watching from the end zone. The kid is way ahead after 5 months than Grossnickel was after 1 year for sure. Plus he can take off and run with it like nobody. I actually think they should try this kid at CB.... He's got to be more athletic than a couple of our guys over there...

Brundage - he's punted in games at D1 level. He is said to be suffering a dead leg right now as his power is not great. Embree can easily pull up game tape of him in game action at Rice and evaluate what he has. Compare this to Grossnickel's tape and I think we all expected Brundage to be the punter this year. No competition.

Grossnickel should go kick. O'Neil is the punter of the future and assuming Brundage gets his leg back soon, probably is most ready to punt now.

Embree will take average with no blocks and no shanks over inconsistency that puts us in a hole and costs us a game.

Gotta go with consistency every day....seems pretty cut and dry as you simply cannot afford some of the shanks that Grossnickle was accustomed too last year and if that inconsistency is still the case from him then he shouldn't be a part of the conversation. Not to mention that while he may have bombed a few 50 yard punts as others denoted, I also remember hearing the same thing last year in practice yet don't remember seeing a single one of those punts in a game.

That. Embree is really big on "game pressure and performance".

Brundage has done it.
Grossnickel has not.
O'Neil - ? (but I think Embree wants to find out. The kid doesn't have a lot of back down in him and just looks like he's tough). Embree has been around enough to know what he likes in the spinal column.

I think Grossnickel is the most talented of the three, but as stated earlier, he's just not consistent. I was watching him closely yesterday. He hung his head and sulked off the field after almost every punt, one time tossing his helmet. I don't think there's any doubt that Embo takes that crap into consideration when selecting the players who will represent this university. Hopefully the kid figures it out and picks himself up.

After reviewing film last night, Grossnickle and O´Neill are now the finalists.
