SMU expresses interest in joining Big 12

Is this kind of like me wanting to **** Kate Upton every day?

SMU is making its case to join a BCS conference and said it has appealed to the Big 12, the Dallas Morning News reported on Thursday.

SMU athletic director Steve Orsini and president R. Gerald Turner told the paper that they believe they have a program, currently in Conference USA, ready to compete in a BCS conference, noting that the Big 12 makes the most sense.

The comments come at a time when conference realignment is at the forefront of college athletics. Texas A&M notified the Big 12 on Thursday that it will explore other conference options, a likely first step to joining the SEC.

That could open a spot in the Big 12 for another school and Houston and BYU are two schools that show up in various reports as possibilities. The Mustangs want to be sure they are considered, especially in light of TCU moving to the Big East, a BCS conference, in 2012-2013.
"We are pushing for it," Turner said, according to the newspaper. "We want the city to know we're pushing for it. We need as much help as possible, even from non-SMU alums. We believe it's good for Dallas."

The Mustangs' football program has seen a resurgence under coach June Jones. They are coming off their second consecutive bowl game and finished as the runner-up in Conference USA, losing to Central Florida in the title game.
Before those two bowl games, SMU hadn't been to one since before the school incurred the NCAA's "death penalty" in 1987.

And the SWC 2.0 arises from the ashes...SMU is looking to be one of UT's bitches.

There is a 6,000 foot UT co-op in SMU's ritzy North Park neighborhood. It's the place to pick up a pink UT t-shirt or burnt orange wedding dress :puke: without having to fuel up the corporate jet for a shopping junket in Austin.

SMU poses no threat to UT's abundant presence in DFW.

I would like SMU to be selected infront of Houston's Cougar High. It's a better school. But I'm not convinced the math works.

SMU is right to make a play for this. I don't like their odds, but you've got to be in it to have a shot.

SMU has a much higher ceiling in my opinion than most, if not all, non-BCS teams in TX (not counting TCU since they're Big East bound). This thing is about to pop under June Jones

Off topic, but please refrain from using that phrase ever again. Ever.

I love this quote out of the ESPN article.

Gerald J. Ford Stadium seats 32,000 but could be expanded to 40,000 by filling in the lower bowl, and even could increase to as much as 60,000 with an upper deck (and possibly suites) on the east side. SMU averaged 23,515 fans in 2010. . . .

Isn't that nearly an identical resume to CSU without any access to an expanded conference footprint? Good luck with that SMU.

if the Big XII had been formed in 1986 instead of 1996, SMU was a no brainer for "token private school" over Baylor. SMU had top 25 teams in football and hoops, with comparable (if not better) academics than BU.

this is true but it would have been a disaster with SMU's cheating

In their glory days SMU filled their stadium and managed to make a lot of money. I can see the political machine in Texas getting solid behind this. I can also see SMU being more than willing to accept second class status in the league just to get into the league, in other words bending over for Texas and OU. Even a reduced share of Big XII money would be way more than they are getting now.

Give SMU home games against the other Big XII southern schools and their attendance would rise substantially, both from increased interest by their own fans and from the proximity to visiting fans. Schools outside the footprint wouldn't do that. They would also be convienient in terms of scheduling all the non-revenue sports.

I agree that it is somewhat of a long shot but not as long as it would appear at first blush.

Craig James hailing SMU as a great fit for the Big 12. I don't know why ESPN airs this crap; it just kills their credibility.

Um, hey, Texas,,,, can we be your bitch again? We promise to sleep in the conference wet spot and not complain. That is, of course if Baylor is willing to share.

Which is saying something, considering Craig James kills ESPN's credibility every time that guy opens his mouth. Seriously, in the list of candidates for a potential Big 12 expansion, SMU is about as far down that list as you can get.

SMU could pony up 40K+ in attendance when UT, OU, OSU and TTU fans roll onto campus. A big chunk would be visitors making a daytrip.

CSU would also get a bump from these fan bases, but in smaller quantities because...it's NOT a day trip.

that was how the SWC was for Texas and ATM. calling TCU, Rice, BU, or even Houston a "road game" when the 30,000 stadium half aggies or horns....

Honest question, how many fans made the trip from Boulder on average from those programs listed? Even if they bring in 5,000. I don't think CSU would have any problem selling an additional 35,000 tickets to watch Oklahoma, Texas or OSU on a given Saturday. TTU might be a different story.

I think CSU should make an effort to put Nebraska on the schedule so you could live the dream.

Nebraska is the monster...capable of bringing 12K.
I'd guess the B12 South would max out at half that much.

That's what Wyoming has been doing. Texas two years ago and Nebraska this season. It's helped Wyoming dramatically inflate their season ticket sales, because those fans just buy the season ticket packages in droves rather than risk not getting a single-game ticket.

Hey that would nearly double the attendance at Hughes! CSU wouldn't have any home games though, which would be awesome. Oh and, **** those goat ****ers!
