why hawaii won

hawaii won because of the following:

we couldn't trust our secondary, heads-up. so, brown sent the house on nearly every play. the result was that the middle was wide open, allowing for big scrambles and all the rest.
it wasn't a horrible performance--- it just is what it is. they were trying to cover up a weakness and they got exploited by a very good qb. once he proved he could scramble up the middle like that, it was all over for CU.

additionally, this team just doesn't know how to win. they had a chance to make some plays that would have turned it around --- they were close, and just like the last few years, they failed to close the deal.

finally, i am actually somewhat encouraged. i was really hoping to get a win out of this one. but, at least we appear to have a staff with a plan-- compare this to the montana state debut with hawkins and you'll see we at least have a chance to improve.

ultimately, however, we know what we already knew-- a brutal schedule and not enough talent is going to take its toll this year.

I thought our performance on D was alright. I'd like to have seen better, but Hawaii puts up points. The shovel pass was a great call on their part.

What concerns the living hell out of me was our OL play. Couldn't run block, couldn't pass block. Didn't even seem to care at the end of the game when our QB was getting steamrolled.

this is what concerns me the most.

I was encouraged by the play of the D. Our corners seemed mostly im position, our D-Line had some very obvious successes. We seemed to be able to pressure at will. The play at WR, O-Line, QB, and TE must be better for us to have a shot. To many times tonight did it seem like hansen had no outlet passes and while waiting to find something got flattened. He also needs to work on his touch passes, the one to PRich would have been amazing if he had put it on the proper shoulder. All in all there is a lot to worry about from this game. At the same time there are some encouraging points.

In the past 6 years it sure seems teams have been able to have big gains on plays like this... yet we never do. Ugh

OL play still sucks.

Brown didn't trust the db's for a reason....that Moniz turned into JC Watts on us (more rushing yards this game than last season i think)....was a forced error on our part maybe. lead with your best punch and ours still isn't Ali. not like our coaches saw that on film from last year. at least we forced the action instead of dropping 9 into coverage.

To me, this loss begins and ends with the O-line. That isn't to say lots of other things didn't go wrong...they did. But, IF we get some sort of ground game (and I'm not asking for much, but maybe a reliable two yards with an occassional 6-yard-plus burst), and can protect the quarterback for a few seconds our offense stays on the field. Overall, the D looked okay tonight (I actually had to credit Hawaii for that fantastic shovel pass--whatya gonna do, excpet maybe knock it down?), but they would have looked a lot better with a few breathers in there, I think.

I dunno...to me it was all on the offensive line.

BTW, thanks Greentea.

the big KO return after we score to make it 17-7 gives UH an all-too-familiar short field. outside the macro-can't run the ball a lick/QB getting sacked factor, that special teams blow it really cuts into what might have been some CU foothold on Uncle Mo.

The OL play was the biggest disappointment to me, Stewart didn't even average 3 yards per carry. Sure, UH has the best front 7 in the WAC, but well, it's the WAC. Why didn't any of the other RB's play?

I liked the DL play and especially their aggressiveness and I don't think anyone, the coaches included, expected Moniz to do so much damage running the ball.

Horrible O-Line play + Avg QB (at best) = 17 pts. against Avg. defense

Th O-line is a huge disappointment. Doesn't seem like these guys have gotten any better at all since they got here. Baffling

Another concern is, like CarolinaBuff pointed out, no other running back played the entire game. Speedy will wear out fast if this is the plan for the whole season. Are the other backs that bad? On the other hand, the o-line is so bad it might not matter who they put back there anyway.

And I'm sorry to say this but I have never felt like Hanson was the answer. I always thought Cody was the better QB (not by much) although with the oline being so bad sometimes I thought Hanson might be the better option because of his ability to escape the rush. In Hansons defense, if we had any kind of pass protection, he's good enough to have won the game last night and is probably good enough to win many games on the schedule.

So to sum up my ramblings, like everyone else has said in this thread, I blame the loss and my concerns for the rest of the season on the O-Line.

Edit: I just wanted to add some positives to this because there were some positives that I am happy about...

The defense was good. Good pressure on the QB most of the night. They allowed something like 45 yds rushing from their RB's. I thought our corners played pretty good which was a concern. The only real big play the D gave up were the QB scrambles.

Punting was good and this was a real big concern. Very happy about the punting. And CU was 1 for 1 on their FG attempts!!!!

Good points above and the oline was brutal. Tyler was not very good either. Could have easily had a 3rd td to Richardson just didnt throw a good ball, I know it was the wind lol. I cant stress enough how big the running game is for this offense. We were ****** on 3rd down for a reason, usually cause it was 3rd and 7+, that cant happen. Find a way to run the ball or we have some major problems. If we ever play Hawaii again, please find another annoucer, that HA VY II **** still has my ears ringing.

Hawaii won because PRich is the only good football player on our team with the possible exception of Miller. Not a whole lot more to it than that.

This is a fragile team mentally. By that I mean they hope to win, want to win, but are just not sure they can win. They start out with a bunch of mistakes and get no offensive momentum then it is downhill from there. I will defend Tyler Hansen here, the OLine was the most disappointing thing to me. Early in the game the rush was intense and if a QB is constantly under pressure he is going to get happy feet (no setting up in time to throw the ball - that is why he held the ball too long sometimes) it happens to even Peyton Manning and Tom Brady - and Tyler does not have the history of success to bolster his confidence.

I agree with a lot of the comments...the big plays were given up because of the sell out blitzes with no one back to fill in the gaps. The big KO return was a killer for momentum.

Overall - this team is lacking play makers. Team speed is not good enough and the OLINE has bad feet.

RU serious? Miller and his buddies were the reason we lost. Does anybody know what happened to our LT? I'm hoping that his departure led to the complete disruption of our OLine cohesion. Will he be back for the next game?

I'm actually encouraged going forward. I thought we did have a pretty good gameplan on offense, called some good plays. Penalties and lack of blocking prevented those from working. But the plays themselves were nice. I think that will help with recruiting. We NEED to recruit some OL!!!

I thought the D did pretty well. Like somebody mentioned, we blitzed a ton because we were worried about our corners, when the blitz got home, we looked good. When they picked it up, there was NOBODY at the next level so that QB could run. I had no idea he was a runner, it seems our staff didn't know either.

Steward did pretty well, when he got room.

Hansen did NOT play well, it's not all his fault though because he didn't get much time. Very inaccurate. Especially on some of those deep attempts to P-Rich (who looked like a real player).

We had a chance to win in the 4th quarter, I never really felt like we were out of the game until there were about 7 minutes left or so. Not bad.

Let's beat Cal. Go buffs

We were f'ed as soon as Hansen fumbled the 1st snap and Jaffee muffed the kick. I got the sense of "here we go again."

I don't know how good our QB play is, our running game or our receivers....why?? Cause all depend on run blocking and pass protection and we have very little run protection and ZERO pass protection. It all starts up front and those guys could make for a LONG year. I was encouraged by our defense, couple blown plays on uncharacteristic runs by the QB, I'm fine with that. The O-line got blown up on 80% of the plays.

Couldn't agree more.

Miller did not play very well last night. He was getting pushed back into Hansen's lap in just about every offensive series.

I think you're about right on. The only other major thing I saw was the D not staying in their lanes trying to get to Moniz. Brown had the right idea bringing pressure, but our DT's kept getting led around the outside. It did look to me that Brown/McGhee got that corrected at halftime and he had a tougher time wiggling free in the 2nd half. The O Line looked like they started to get their act together too for a little bit after halftime but lapsed back into bad habits.

The playcalling from EB was fine. We had PA rollouts, and deep posts called at the appropriate times when UH walked their safeties up, but just didn't block well enough for Hansen to get into a rhythm. I don't think it's fair to judge Embree's first game against last year's squad, so we'll see what gets fixed and what doesn't as the season goes on.

The Hawaii Offensive Coordinator and Moniz did a great job adjusting to the Buffs defense.
Hawaii didn't have to beat CU in the air. They beat CU on the ground. More specifically, Moniz beat CU on the ground. When CU lined up in the corners, Moniz ran effectively up the gut. It's unnerving that a prolific passing team can beat CU on the ground. Hawaii's O-Line was new and less experienced than CU's D-Line. But they didn't give up as many sacks. Moniz had lots of time to watch the play develop, check down his coverage, run through a few arm tackles, and gain big yards. I don't understand why CU didn't put a spy on Moniz. He was able to fake hand-offs and make big plays on keepers. CU's DB's were running to where they running to where they thought the ball was, hook, line and sinker.

On defense, Hawaii shut down the strong side. The Warrior D stopped everything on the left side. Their DB's are fast and were able to rush Hansen all day long. It was a rare series when CU didn't go backwards due to a pourus Oline. CU's poor execution on center to QB exchange, slippery footwork and various penalties showed that CU has lots of work to do yet. Hawaii was the more disciplined team.

Agree with this post.

We actually had them on the ropes. Had the offense been able to stick the ball in the end zone rather than kick a FG after the fumble recovery in the third quarter I think that Hawaii would have folded like napkin. To their credit and our fault we let them off the hook and even though the FG brought us to within a TD they could take momentum off the field because they stopped us.

Hawkins left a few good players but for the most part this team has a lack of talent across the board including a distinct lack of playmakers on both offense and defense.

The O-line had a terrible night. They simply failed to consistently control the line of scrimmage on both running and passing plays. I saw some attempts to be more physical than we are used to but missed assignments, poor coordination, and inconsistent effort doomed the game from early on.

Speedy had a few good runs (including a couple big ones that got called back for stupid penalties) but overall danced to much, missed holes when he had them, and went down with little to no contact on multiple carries.

Hansen was Hansen, he is a servicable FBS starting QB, he isn't a difference maker. I disagree with the earlier post that said Cody was better, Hansen can do and does more on the field. He has better mobility, a better arm, and makes better reads. He lacks some of Cody's accuracy but Cody lost that edge due to his lack of vision. Hansen was not able to make something out of nothing and at times missed some opportunities but averall he was neither the problem or the solution.

PRich is a difference maker, unfortunately to do his thing requires time for him to get downfield and the QB to find and hit him, this was lacking and with the failure of the running game Hawaii could overload on him on to many occasions. McCulloch looks like a serious contributor for the future as well, gets open and catches the ball in traffic. The fact that Cefalo was our other WR with catches shows exactly how devoid of talent Hawk left this position.

TEs as a part of the offense was good to see. Five receptions, three from Deehan show that the TE is back in the passing offense, unfortunately the TEs were less than effective as blockers on a frequent basis and Hawaii took advantage. Our TEs have to get better if this offense is going to work.

D-line Inconsistent as well but some sparks to provide optimism. A number of the big plays for Hawaii came when the D-line forced Moniz to break off the play and the LBs and DBs failed to follow up. DTs did well and we got some pressure from the outside, tackling could have been better.

The LBs were very inconsistent as well. Outside of Major we simply lack athleticism at the LB spot. Way to many situations were they were a step behind and a reaction late. With our problems in the defensive backfield these guys simply have to take care of their responsibilities because the safeties are going to be to busy trying to cover for the corners.

Not unexpected but the defensive backfield struggled. The pass coverage actually wasn't that bad but they missed multiple opportunities to make plays and it just didn't happen. Coverages were missed, tackles where blown, and they failed terribly to recognize when plays broke down and to respond to the scrambles. Sandersfeld also could have put the nail in the Hawaii coffin when he flat dropped an interception on the drive after the Buffs pulled to within 7. He would have been off to the races and had the tieing TD in his hands and Hawaii would have folded at the time, instead he drops it, Hawaii scores and game over.

Our punting was very good but a bit slow, we need to get the punt off faster, protect better, or we will have some punts blocked. Place kicking was good as well, better than the adventures of the past. Our return game shows the lack of athleticism, didn't contribute much through most of the game. We didn't give up any returns but I worry about that part of the game as well.

Overall I was disapointed, CU should be beating teams like Hawaii soundly but I did see some signs for hope. If we can survive this year I saw a team that was adapting but getting better in a lot of ways.

absurd. he would have been caught from behind at midfield

He would have had a full head of steam and a 10 yard headstart before the Hawaii guys even got turned around. If he didn't score he would have been very close.

Sandersfield had a clear path to the end zone. Nobody was going to catch him. That play was the pivotal part of the game, although our o-line's ineptitude certainly tipped the scales in UH's favor. The O-Line was atrocious yesterday. Simply atrocious.

Hawaii spread the defense out and created running lanes for Moniz. They knew the CU linebackers weren't fast or athletic enough to catch him in the open field. The game plan looked sound to me, just not enough talent to execute it. Hansen needs to get the ball out quicker, perhaps they need the RB to sit in the flat all season as a safety valve. The team has a serious lack of speed all around.

Agreed....reminded me of the 2001 Big 12 Championship game, when we had the pick 6 that at the end was the difference. We need everyone to step up. He had a ****ing TD and he blew it.
