What exactly is the benefit for the universities if all of the conferences to go to 16?

First, seeing what Scott was able to pull with the Pac-12, and the SEC and Big 10 able to renegotiate their TV contracts within the next 5 years, who's to say the pieces of the pie will actually get larger, instead of smaller with more members, than if the conferences just redid their deals with 12?

Second, if we go to 4 superconferences and ditch the NCAA, doesn't that remove even more of the oversight and leave the U$Cs, Ohio States, and Miamis free to cheat even more while leaving schools who try to do things the right way in the dust? It seems to me that superconferences are paving the way to big-time college ball becoming little more than minor-league ball, and you'd think some of the presidents of these institutions would see that. Sure, some (SEC schools) aren't going to care, but you would think that the Stanfords, Michigans, and other top-notch schools would.

Finally, wouldn't TCU kick the Big East to the curb in a heartbeat if given the chance to join a refurbished Big 12?

Answers:

First, there is certainly no guarantee of a larger TV contract. However, we do know what the Pac-12 television contract $$$ will be, and it can safely be assumed that adding Texas to the mix is going to greatly increase the footprint and TV markets of the conference, thereby generating increased revenue for the conference.

Second, is seems to be that $$$ are dominating most of the expansion talk these days.

Third, the Big 12 conference has almost as much stability as a 2 minute old colt - i.e. none. The conference lost two members last year, at least one member this year, and who knows what OU and Texas are going to do in the future. For all of Beebe's posturing, at this point it appears that it is "every man for himself" in the Big 12 conference, which is not going to look all that inviting to TCU and BYU and such teams.

this is a point i've tried to make a few times. while the Pac has the state of the art TV deal now....there will be an equalization move over the next couple years from the Big Ten and SEC. the advantage we have now, as the conf "first to market" is not a guarantee that we control markets when other make entry. right, Betamax?

I feel like we are playing a game of risk. We are all scrambling to advance our armies as fast as possible. And we all know how this ends. We spend all of our energy trying to get a part of Eastern North America, then the next thing you know some asshole from Kamchatka breaks through our weak defenses in Alaska and because we didn't properly secure Alberta, and we end up having to bail through Central America to try and get restarted in South America. We've all seen this one before. How come no one will learn from history!!

So you're saying that we should build up Australia with all of our armies in SE Asia and wait until everyone else has exhaused themselves before attacking? Always worked for me.

Hang back in Queensland with some rare Toohey's Blue or some Victoria Bitter (VB). Watch **** unfold and then laugh at Baylor that they are getting served some humble pie....

Back on topic though.

I still havent heard a good argument for this expansion that explains how we will be that much better off, or how we will be worse off if we dont expand. All of the arguments seem to basically say Texas is worth alot of money and everyone else is doing it so we better get on board or die a horrible death, without any evidence.

I imagine there's a clause in the 12-PAC tv deal that addresses future realignment and/or expansion. I just don't see Larry Scott overlooking something like that.

I find it hard to believe that there will be 3 other 16-team conferences anyitme soon (SEC, Big 10, ACC or Big East). I also don't see how not being in a super conference would be detrimental. Regardless of how many teams are in your conf, you still only play 12 games. A PAC-12 team will have a schedule full of good games just like a super conference team. We may get a slightly larger junk of cash with other BIG 12 teams coming in, but I don't see how that outweighs getting stuck in an east division with a bunch of ***holes.

I'd say that the evidence lies in how big of a cash cow March Madness is to basketball and that a lucrative ($) playoff system would be the eventual outcome of four 16-team superconferences. Colorado itself wouldn't be significantly better off, but we wouldn't be left out of the bonanza.

We drew an additional red line from Japan to New Guinea, otherwise every a-hole and their brother tries that strategy.

I always played with Ant and Artica. Lines from Argentina and West Aussie to the bottom of the board. Use the joker cards to assign the country, worth one army for the "continent". It allowed for flow in the southern Hemisphere and kept the Aussie contingent honest.

in re reading this post I realize that I am in fact a huge nerd

intriguing..

The idea is very simple. 4 super-conferences of 16 teams each = 64 teams to split the pie. Currently, there are 120 teams that split the pie.

The teams in the super-conferences will get much more than before, while the teams left out will get much less. It is really that simple.

= lawsuit from the leftover teams like the one filed against the current BCS set up. At least with the current set up, they can claim that less confs and independants have a shot at a BCS bowl.
