Much like last year when Ambrose had two NFL corners and thus superior talent, he was outcoached today.

His DB's gave up play after play and had no answer for P-Rich. Double the guy? Triple him? Nope, let him run wild.

I'll go on record that right now he is a great recruiter, as his 1-year experience looks impressive on paper. But Brown did much more with less talent today.

If you're a high school cornerback right now thinking you got a chance to go pro, take a long look. Jimmy and Jalil were made by Greg Brown. Cal's db's were pretty atrocious today, given the talent level.
 
I'm sorry but didn't Greg Brown play a hand in recruiting much of the "lesser" talent in the secondary? So why do I need to give him any credit again?


And Ambrose doesn't call the defensive coverage.


And if you going to cherry pick this game on Ambrose, fine let's go back to the Toledo, numerous Missouri embarrassments among other blowouts for the "Vince Lombardi of defensive back coaching" in Greg Brown.

Lets temper the argument between the both of you... Greg Brown has shown flashes, but he's also shown some bad. This is his first stint as a sole DC iirc (co-dc at zona right?) and Im pretty optimistic. Looks solid to me, we'll see though.
 
Give credit where credit is due. Who ever coached up Jimmy Smith deserves high praise. That guy turned into a of-fly good DB and was projected as the number 1 overall talent at his position by a few scouts. Above Patrick Peterson even. I am looking forward to following him on Sundays and I expect him to make a couple Pro Bowls out of that Ravens Defense.
 
Brown has to take some responsibility for where we stand at DB. Little to no depth at safety and our CBs look lost at times. There have been injuries that have hurt (Bell and Harrington), but we have to get better athletes back there, sooner rather than later.

Only said that if you are a HS senior, deciding between Cal and CU, it's really no contest.

From what I saw in that game, AA can't coach em up. We should have had the #1 pass defense in the country last year or close.

LOL you are aware that the safeties also play a part in pass defense too. Greg Brown recruited most of what you see in the secondary. None of the talent is that good which means talented recruits aren't buying your assessment that they should come to CU because of Greg Brown.

Greg Brown's recruiting has been horrific. We are playing 4 safeties when we are in nickel, a couple of which have no business playing D1 given their natural abilities. Henderson is probably the only true CB that is getting any playing time.

Watching Henderson, Orms and Sandersfield cover Cal and Hawaii's receivers shows really good coaching. They have had a few cases where they've been isolated and beat by more athletic guys. But in general, they are so sound that they make up for lack of size/speed and get it done. Cal has two of the better WR's in the conference.

Contrast that to the much better athletes that Ambrose is working with.

We have a huge talent gap here, which is almost solely a Brown issue. But he can coach lights out.

Sorry not going to give a pass to Brown for coaching limited talent due to his recruiting. (not sure what great technique you are seeing since most of the time I see our DBs names on the back chasing the other receiver) If he can't recruit maybe he should go back to the NFL and we can find a coach that can coach and RECRUIT.


And they aren't making up for the lack of talent and speed. We are giving up over 30 points a game and we played two average teams at best. Sorry not seeing any positives of Greg Brown's secondary coaching here. Just seems like a bunch of wishful thinking from you.

Hmmm. Maybe it is whishful thinking, but I still agree with Dio and Buffaholic. Imo Greg Brown has been very good as his blitz pacakages have been extremely effective, but perhaps largely contibuting to the secondary's play. On the note of blitzing my new Favorite on defense is Rippy. When they send him he is extremely disruptive.
I didn't get to see the second half of the game, but the first half the CAL Quarterback was just making rediculously accurate passes on the run.
 
A very common misconception in this thread, assistants recruit by geographical area not necessarily by position. Now the position coach can help close the deal.

What was going on in recruiting the past few years had little to do with any of the assistants. Hawkins refused to offer early in a lot of cases and had a very haphazard approach to recruiting - how many top recruits even tripped to CU in the last few years. Add the fact that Hawkins was a 2 year lame-duck coach, CU's recruiting was down across the board.

IMO, it is silly to blame anyone on this for the lack of talent including Cabral or Brown.

Time to look forward.
 
Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy -- Los Angeles, a portion of the Inland Empire (San Bernardino, Riverside, Redlands, etc), Houston, New Orleans.

Quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer -- Will recruit quarterbacks nationally as well as Washington and Oregon.

Offensive line coach Steve Marshall -- San Fernando Valley (California) and Houston.

Tight ends coach and special teams coordinator J.D. Brookhart -- San Antonio, Dallas-South and Colorado.

Wide receivers coach Bobby Kennedy -- Dallas.

Defensive coordinator Greg Brown -- San Diego, Las Vegas, Arizona.

Inside linebackers coach and defensive run game coordinator Brian Cabral -- Orange County, Inland Empire and Hawaii.

Defensive line coach Mike Tuiasosopo -- Northern California, Central California the Inland Empire and Hawaii.

Outside linebackers and defensive ends coach Kanavis McGhee -- Houston and New Orleans.
 
Yes, recruiting is broken up by region, but the position coaches do have a certain amount of responsibility in helping close deals at their position. It is okay if you want to look forward, but then the DB recruiting does not exactly blow you away either.
