Excessive celebration??

Someone please explain to me why Clemons was flagged for excessive celebration against CSU. Are you kidding me?! I know they're trying to clamp down, but come on! It's way too subjective. Hansen's celebration on the first TD seemed more excessive than Clemons if you ask me. Thankfully it didn't end making a difference, but can you imagine scoring a late touchdown in a close game, doing exactly what Clemons did, getting docked 15 yards on the kick off and losing because the other team had a short field? Ridiculous.

It's not because it was "excessive". It was because he "taunted" the opposing team with his little walk waddle. Still a stupid rule, IMO.
 
Equally stupid were the "sideline interference" calls against csu. They helped, but ...

Announcers were ragging on the ram who touched the blocked punt downfield, saying he made it a live ball. I thought it was a live ball the minute it was blocked

Our DBs had a real good game

Not allowed to draw attention to yourself. You can celebrate with teammates like a crazy person but God forbid you ham it up for the crowd.
 
If the ball crosses the line of scrimmage on a punt, even if it's blocked, all the kicking team can do is down it, unless a member of the receiving team touches it. Same as any other punt.Incidentally, the same holds true for a blocked FG.
 
You can't so much as look at the fans in the endzone without getting flagged it seems...

Let the guys play, you can't expected somebody to not be excited after scoring a TD...

It seems in general that if the celebration appears to be spontaneous, unplanned, and celebratory in nature it will not be called. If it looks pre-planned, practiced, taunting, or intended to draw attention to oneself it will be called.

This becomes the judgement call of all judgement calls though because it means the official has to assume intent. Also if a guy does something without opponents around it is one thing, put an opponent close and now he is taunting. Also some guys could practice for weeks and not do the little dance Clemons did, on the other hand others could do it without having done it before and without really thinking about it.

Bottom line is that it is a rule that is impossible to apply fairly and impacts the game without the cause of the penalty having any real impact on the game or danger to the players.

Agree. I can see why taunting would be flagged. If Clemons got in the DB's face, sure throw a flag. But what he did was completely harmless. Way too subjective
 
At least he didn't do it before going in the endzone..... they'll take the TD off the board now. Has anyone seen that happen yet this year?
 
Terrible rule. Kid scores a touchdown and he is supposed to just walk off the field as if nothing happened. As if he didn't just leave the opposing team's corner in the dust for a crucial touchdown catch. Seeing Clemons compete with emotion is worth the ridiculous penalty.
 
I don't mind the rule. Act like you have been there. Toss the ball to the official head to the sideline and celebrate with your team, not as an individual.
 
This is the only point in the the game that ,upon reflection, I am ashamed of my behavior. I shouldn't have repeatedly shouted "**** YOU REFS!" and when the CSU fans sitting near me turned and looked in disgust I shouldn't have shouted "WHAT THE **** ARE YOU LOOKING AT?" FOCUS ON THE GODDAMN GAME LIKE IT'S A GOAT'S ASSHOLE!". And when my wife gave me the "that look" I shouldn't have called her a "traitorous skag" and stormed off to buy a hat.

I HATE the post TD celebrations. Always have. That being said, TClem's "celebration" was nothing. The penalty was a joke, I thought. I saw the rammie RB do more after getting a first down. Why not flag that? I mean, why just flag them after TD's? Why not after a post sack celebration? Or a post big hit celebration like Polk's?

What I think is that prior to TClem's TD, there had been some chippiniess and a couple of unsportsmanlike penalties. I think the ref was trying to send a message, which is BS. BTW, did you see the ref delay time at one point to talk to Hansen and the rammie defensive captain? I assume that was about the unsportsmanlike stuff.

Yes, and that pissed me off. We already came out and showed our formation before they called the captains over.
 
The rule is entirely too subjective, and it should be abolished entirely.

The refs already have plenty of power in determining plays. Subjective rules make it way easier for them to have an inappropriate influence on the game. Subjectivity has no part in college football. Objectivity does, and that's it. I know there is a "subjective" interpretation of an objective rule, but let's not give refs carte blanche here...
