Thought it would be good to have a place to post updates as they happen....

Pittsburgh and Syracuse, once flagship programs of the Big East, have been accepted as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, extending the league's current membership to 14 schools, the ACC announced Sunday morning.

The ACC Council of Presidents unanimously voted upon the decision. The invitation followed the submission of letters of application from both universities.

Big 12 football: West Virginia is the final hope

West Virginia is the final hope for the Big 12. Any chance to salvage the Big 12 rests with West Virginia. The Mountaineers, if coupled with fellow Big East members TCU and Louisville or perhaps Brigham Young, would add a little dash to the Big 12. Which might, might entice the Sooners to stick around

That Texas to the ACC stuff appears to have been a bluff after all

Lets talk about the politics of this in this thread.

You can see whats going to happen. Soon there will be 4 major conferences The Pac x, The Big x, The SEC, and The ACC all with 14 to 16 teams. They will have a playoff and then a less mythical NC game with a playoff somehow involving our 4 favorite bowls. You, see they have to get to 64 teams because that will give them enough of a majority among the 117 FCS (D1) teams to over rule the have nots.

How long before they only allow interleague play between the 4 super conferences to tighten the noose further? That way all the games matter and there is more TV revenue for the bankrollers.

I can't see the NCAA and congress siting idly by much longer. The NCAA in particular is being sidelined and disempowered. From a congressional point this is pure market manipulation where a private company is penalizing certain public government institutions while rewarding others and all of it is on the backs of unpaid workers. Those marginalized schools have a lot of alums that will not like this. Sure, There are have nots in these conferences that will benefit. Schools like Oregon State, Washington State, Wake Forest, Miami, Vanderbilt, Univ of Mississippi, Northwestern, Iowa (small schools with low enrollment) will benefit while schools like Kansas, Missiouri, West Virginia will be marginalized into irrelevance. And when that happens it will take a toll on other programs like basket ball (why the NCAA should become more concerned).

The problem I have is this; the BCS is now affecting the regular season by manipulating the conferences.

The NCAA should have stepped in years ago and created a post season.

If somehow this 4 conf playoff system comes through, I see college football start to wither and die a little bit. All the fans from the FBS schools on the outside looking in will turn to Sunday to get their football fix.

I agree with this more from the perspective that it further turns college football into the NFL. I recognize the NFL is a very popular league, but I for one, much prefer college football to the NFL.

this^^

There is a reason why I dont watch the NFL anymore

we'll see what happens. i think we will end up with more than four 16 team conferences. they'll establish guidelines for how the others can band together and become a superconference as well. this will be their way to try to avoid the antitrust issue. i think the really ugly part of it will be that some of the conferences assembled from the left-behinds are going to be WAY less competitive than the pac, big 10, sec, and acc... way less. so, unless you add another round to the playoff so that more than one team from a conference can make the playoffs, you are going to have some really ridiculous results. hypothetical example: usc wins the pac west and ou wins the pac east. they are each ranked in the top 5. ou beats usc to win the pac champ. they go to the playoffs and face conf. champ. boise state who has just won the also-ran conference. totally silly result that usc would sit at home and boise state will continue to play.

if they head down this superconference path, they are going to unleash a bunch of unintended consequences.

I'm a Broncos fan, but I can't stand the NFL. I'm a CU fan, but I'm also an avid college footabll fan. I like watching schools like U of Houston, Boise St, Navy, or others put together great seasons and upset some big boys. I really don't like the way college footbal is going. A school in a superconference will probably have a schedule like this:

9 conf games. 1 or 2 game against another super conf. 1 or 2 warm-up game against a complete cupcakes.

IMO, this will morph CFB into NFL-lite, where $$$$$ will be the only consideration. The golden age of CFB could very well be fading into the past before our eyes. I don't watch the NFL at all now. It's boringly, homogenous, pre-packaged, micromangaed and designed to drain every conceivable penny of revenue. It is the No Fun League.

I enjoy virtually any good CFB game, because the product has not been completely designed for marketing purposes only. There are personalities, quirks and imperfections in the game that makes it seem real and engaging. Hell, every team in the NFL runs the same O and D and you can't tell them apart half the time. Add in the mantra of "parity" has completely removed the possibility of an upset and you have a vanilla league that appeals to the broadest base possible, but develops no passion. A mile wide and an inch deep as the old saying goes. It would be a shame if CFB got ruined like that.

That's what I was trying to say, but Lefty did it better. Clearly not an engineering major...

If it's about money than it's about tv. If it's about tv than it's about ratings. If it's about ratings, which it always is, than it will be only about money money money. Who can deliver big markets. Who can attract eyeballs. And, a la the NFL, aligning the games to get the biggest national markets possible. Imagine your ability to sell advertising into all 4 conference networks which you control at the same time. Im looking at you espn. Kinda like those Coors commercials that are only on the NFL channels.

Don't kid yourself if you don't think that's where this headed. Monopoly revenue streams for the big schools and a big **** you to the Tulsas of the world. This is going to ruin the game. I want to see playoffs but I want them to be all inclusive.

Agree 100%.

What makes the NCAA basketball tournament so great is that a team like Butler can go to the Final Four. If college football goes to these four super conferences, and they try to control college football - the result will not be good.

I'm discussing within myself whether to continue watching CFB or just go with the NFL and NCAA basketball. Something in me has been telling me to shift away from college football for nearly a year while at the same time, increase my support in college basketball. This same thing did warn me a few months before CU joining the Pac-10 about that happening.

I'm a Broncos and Buffs fan...it doesn't mean I have to follow CU football but I can follow CU basketball.

There are two conferences that are getting raided to form the 4 super conferences. The teams that are in play are:
BIG 12
  • Baylor
  • Iowa State
  • Kansas
  • Kansas State
  • Missouri
  • Oklahoma
  • Oklahoma State
  • Texas
  • Texas a&m – SEC now
  • Texas Tech
Big East & Independent
  • BYU
  • Cincinnati
  • UConn
  • Louisville
  • Notre Dame
  • Pittsburgh – ACC now
  • Rutgers
  • South Florida
  • Syracuse – ACC now
  • TCU
  • West Virginia
If the world is changing to 4 major conferences the ACC needs 2 more, the SEC needs 3 more, the B1G and PAC each need 4 more. Since the ACC has made the move to nab the Big East teams, I really don’t see an ACC jumping ship to the SEC or B1G, which means new conference members would come from the above list. This means there are 13 spots for 18 teams. So the question is who goes where and why? If the PAC strikes next and takes OU, OSU, UT, & TTech then there are 14 teams looking at 9 spots. I would guess the 5 teams on the outside looking will be 5 of the 7:
  • Baylor – Small fish in a big pond in Texas
  • BYU – Geography hinders their options and the PAC probably will pass on them
  • Iowa State – Small fan base and foot print, plus Iowa is the bigger draw in state. They do not fit in to the SEC or ACC
  • Kansas State – the second school in a small market state
  • Cincinnati – B1G won’t want them as the Ohio market belongs to OSU. They do not fit in with the SEC or ACC
  • TCU – Small fish in a big pond in Texas
  • South Florida – SEC and ACC already have their presence in Florida, and the B1G will not reach that far south.
Two of the teams have to be included, or else you have to add a Boise State, Hawaii, Fresno State, Memphis, or someone along those lines. So let the predictions fly as to where the final pieces land:
BIG 12
  • Baylor – out
  • Iowa State – out
  • Kansas – B1G
  • Kansas State – SEC
  • Missouri – SEC
  • Oklahoma – PAC
  • Oklahoma State – PAC
  • Texas – PAC
  • Texas a & m – SEC
  • Texas Tech - PAC
Big East & Independent
  • BYU – out
  • Cincinnati – out
  • UConn - ACC
  • Louisville – B1G

Good list, but I don't think there is any way KjSU lands a spot in any of these leagues, much less the $EC. My gut feeling is that the ACC doesn't get through this without a raid by the $EC at some point. Most likely Va Tech, but maybe somebody like NC St. jumps to the $EC. That takes KjSU off the $EC radar, and my guess is that somebody like Cincy or USF might get tabbed by the ACC to replace the school they lose...

I would almost rather see the Pac add Boise, fresno, Byu and hawaii. Over ever seeing anyone from the Big 12 ever again

I was thinking BYU over tech, but that would push us to the ****** plains pod if they went that way. **** that noise.

i have heard the V-Tech to SEC rumor, but a guy in the office says they are pretty tied to the ACC, since UVA and the Virginia legislature helped push to get them in. I was 1 school short for the whole re-alignment and didn't know who to add. I basically made a stab at KjSU to the $EC, but it was just a guess based on the remaining teams at the end.

I still think the SEC will end up pulling 1 or 2 schools from the ACC, although that may be a little tougher now with the ACC upping their exit fee.

We're better off staying at 12 over considering any of those schools. None add televisions or time zones. We'd be dividing about the same size pie 16 ways instead of 12.

Our only viable reason for expansion is to move east into new markets and a new time zone. I hear what you're saying though. I wish there was a way to gain absolute dominance over everything relevant in the west and forget about the plains states. For travel destinations, I'd go with Hawaii, UNLV, New Mexico and San Diego State. Not gonna happen, though.

SEC would love to get to 16 through Missouri plus ACC teams from North Carolina and Virginia. I don't think it will happen with VA Tech, though. My guess is that West Virginia ends up being the fallback option. They need someone the other schools can rip on for academics.

Ed McKechnie, chairman of the Kansas Board of Regents, said Monday night that the board has added conference realignment to its agenda Thursday. The meeting, which will be held in executive sessions with officials from both KU and K-State present, is roughly scheduled for noon but the time could change, he said. The Big 12 and legal options will be discussed.
"I remain confident the Big 12 will survive," McKechnie said. "In 10 years, I think Nebraska and Colorado will look back and regret leaving. The Big 12 has a bright future and a lot more to offer as a sum than its parts.

Why in the heck isn't the SEC targeting WVU?

Just seems weird.

I know you hippies think we are all the same kind of redneck down here but the Appalachian folk are a bit different. Nobody wants to go to games there. Current rumors say WVU has been declined by the SEC. WVU denies. B'ham News just said Mizzou is the 14th team and the barn moves to the east. SEC office denied that rumor. $20M says the SEC doesn't get anybody from the ACC. Bama fans are hoping to drop the barn as a yearly opponent and keep tuk.

I want Louisville and USF. Of course I live in Tampa and that is a bit selfish.

For those not familiar with me: barn=auburn tuk= tennessee university at knoxville

Charlie, when did you start offering translations for your cryptic posts?

To those who don´t know Charlie, if you think that´s bad, wait until he chimes on the coaching carousel.
