Name another BCS program that plays only a one game series on the road

I think Wash St did a few years back when they played Notre Dame and lost in epic fashion. Can't remember any others.

Name another BCS program that has no media contract for this season.

Name another school that has to pay off Dan Hawkins. I will take this over retaining Dan for another year. I think the payouts are about the same right?

Weirdest part about that was that game was played in San Antonio.

This is a unique situation to get some $$ given our situation. I love the big games, but we've got to give ourselves an OOC schedule that puts us in position to make bowl games more easily. Two tough BCS-conference opponents OOC is not what we need to be doing now or anytime through 2015, nor do we need to be playing HaVahEE or Fresno State on the road. Bowl games will bring appealing games too, along with more exposure and a crucial month of practicing. Let's get some Idaho's and New Mexico's on this bitch and save the LSU's and Wisconsin's for 2015

I'm sure there's other cases but it would take some thought and research. As CVille pointed out, the others are most likely a unique situation like ours or an exception due to a last-minute opening that came up on someone's schedule or something like that. There's also the few cases where a lower-tier BCS program will simply be willing to play at a big-time program without a return trip just for the exposure and/or payday like the WSU game you mentioned.

Just thinking off the top of my head, what about some games this year like USF at ND? KjSU at Miami? Cincy at Tennessee? Do these games have return trips?

I'm pretty sure USC won't be making the cross country trip to Syracuse next year. It probably won't be a popular opinion, but I agree with CVille on this one.

There is a return game for USC but they are playing it in the Meadowlands.

An article was written on this last year, if you care to chase it down there are several examples listed and many of them better than Wazzu.

Best reasoning I can pull from that happening was Catholicism = ND $$$ and their desire to do a game in Texas for recruiting purporses. Primarily #2.

I was there with some friends who went to ND, and the alamodome was loaded with ND fans. San Antonio may have one of the largest percentages of Catholics in the US as well - lots of families with historical origins from Mexico, which is largely Catholic. Fun trip. I'm sure Texas recruiting also played a big role.

Anyone know how much we typically make off of a home game? Just trying to figure out Bohn's logic in taking a payout rather then a return trip.

No.

The logic is that we both had an open date, we needed $$$ to subsidize our Big XII losses, and tofu was willing to pay us more than the going rate to play in the Shoe. There, most likely, is no room in either's schedule for a return game.

I undertsand it's about the money my point was if a typical home game nets us as much or close to the $1.4 million that OSU is paying us for this game then why take a payout for a (likely) loss. We could have gotten a return trip (both teams have openings in 2013 and 2015) or just scheduled a game against a different school at Folsom. I'd guess we make about $2 million per game on ticket sales then add food and merchandise sales to this. Don't know how much gameday expenses are though. Even if the OSU game is significantly more profitable im not sure it was smart choice becuase of the ramifications of on our record which then effects recruting, donations, future ticket sales, etc. What if we miss a bowl game by one game?

That is a valid point. I just don't know how much profit is generated from a "typical" home game in Boulder.

There is more to scheduling than just saying "let's play". Are our open dates on the same weekend? How many home/road games do we have in those seasons? Who do we play before/after? And, would tofu even agree to a return game? Maybe, maybe not, but if they did, the payout for this year would probably have been less.

This is where we choose to disagree. Any person who would donate money to a 7-6 team, but not to a 6-7 team with a loss at tofu is not really the type of "fan" you want anyway. A loss at tofu is not going to be the determining factor in CU getting to a bowl game. What if we beat tofu, but don't end up with 7 wins anyway. We lost to Hawaii - should we not schedule them in the future? Agreed, the schedule this year is brutal - but it is a one-time unusual situation due to the move to the Pac-12.
