Grossnickle to kickoff? Why not?

He has a strong leg. He did kick in high school. Why not see if he can put the ball into the end zone on kickoffs?

Why not? If he can get 50% into the endzone and the rest NOT out of bounds, we win at least 1 more game this year.

Is this a done deal or a suggestion?

A suggestion. The guy is on scholarship. He knows how to kick. He has a strong leg. Our kickoffs suck ballzz. Utilize the players we have on the roster.

I hope this happens he definitely has a strong leg. But Im curious about why he hasn't gotten a chance in a game yet. I would hope if he was showing he could do this Embree would give him a chance.

Im not opposed to wholesale changes on st. Place kicker is covered. Now all we gotta do is fix everything else. Can we please find someone that wont faircatch a punt on the 4 yard line? I love Speedy as a player and we have to have him play well but Im just not seeing it on punt return. He doesnt look comfortable back there. Thats ok too, it's a tough job and it's not for everybody.

Has it been Oliver or Darragh who have been getting shots at kicking it off and going way short?

I'm not that pissed about the punting. I hate the rugby kick stuff, but the coaches are telling him to do that. I suspect it's because he got two blocked. Straight up punt the ball and protect him better.

Kickoffs are a much bigger problem right now, IMO.

That might be telling him to rugby style punt it but he's gotta execute it better than that. Wouldnt hurt to get the ball higher than 5 ft off the ground rugby style or not. I agree on kickoffs, they are a big problem. Also, Darragh needs to get the ball off quicker.

To be fair to Darragh, I believe he's been told to pick guys out on the rugby punt, and that is what he has done. That is ****ing hard. Too bad the other guys haven't been told or failed to look for it (thanks Makiri).

Jesus. Can we just have Castor kick down the middle? Would he not **** that up?

I could be wrong, but I think both Castor and Oliver have put the ball out of bounds on kickoffs at one point or another this year. Thus my suggestion about Grossnickel.

It really hurts momentum when you kickoff and the opponent ends up with the ball at the 35 or better.

My theory is that they keep telling Castor to angle his kicks. He ****s that up. Perhaps he wouldn't **** it up if he was told to kick straight? Also, Oliver has ****ed up the angled kicks as well. And when he straight kicks it, Ohio State returns it 95 yards cause he doesn't have the leg. So, Its either Castor or Nickle at this point.

So, just curious here and giving the coaches the benefit of a doubt, how has Grossnickle looked in practice? Does anyone know? Just playing Devil's Advocate, but wholdn't he be kicking if he was the best at it in practice?

Still dont understand why he didn't go after that! But that is one of the advantages of the rugby and why they have him keep it as low as possible.

So he was picking someone out to kick at like an onside? I thought he just caught it bad off his foot. In that case, it worked and the only one that reacted was the OSU player. No wonder Darragh was pissed after, maybe if I wasnt drunk id have noticed that lol.

Every down players have a general disdain for kickers. I understand that. Kickers (or a lack thereof) can make a pretty significant difference in a game, though.

I can't believe we have two kickers and two punters on this squad and we still can't seem to get the job done.

Hmmm.... Well practices have been closed for some time, but at the last practice I was at, Grossnickel was working on kickoffs after DO had beaten him out for the punting position.

Castor and Oliver were identical in their kicks and I said at that time, Castor is more athletic so at least he gives you a 11th tackler on the field.
Grossnickel was well behind them in kickoffs, but he had just started doing them again.

Thus, I'm pretty confident that the coaches saw this as a weakness early on and have given Grossnickel every chance to prove he can do it better.

Paging Matt Thompson (the one we like). Yes this is going to turn into a 3+ page thread about kickers but even more so than our offensive line issues and our inability to tackle the kicking game is killing us. Field goal kicking, not so much. And not to get greedy, but I'd like the other aspects like booming kickoffs and rugby punting being murdered permanently to improve.

Grossnickle needs to get this opportunity. Even if both Castor and Oliver have looked better in practice, Embree and Brookhart needs to send the message to the team and the fans that continuing to make the same mistakes will not be tolerated. That someone else will be given the opportunity to get the job done. Failure cannot be tolerated.
