Embree's post game comments

I didn't listen to the post game on the radio but did hear some of Jon's heated comments. Then I listened to Mac's show yesterday and a caller asked him about Embree's calling out the players. Mac was pretty disappointed that Jon did so and felt like Jon would learn from it and not make the same mistake in the future.

Later, I tuned into CJ and Joel and caught the middle of a caller named "Dave" who was an older guy. He apparently is a former player and is still close to the program and knows a lot of the players. Dave was very angry at both Jon and Joel for blaming the players. He made some very good points and actually got Joel to backtrack, which is pretty impressive.

So, all that being said, I heard Embree say, on the radio this morning, that he blew it. He said that he was very emotional after such a tough loss and said things he shouldn't have. He said that future press conferences will be "boring." I'm kind of guessing that Mac and, probably, others took Jon to the side and had a talk with him.

I think the main point here is that this staff is in the early stages of the learning curve. Its going to take them a bit of time.

Oh, and "Dave" and Joel mentioned something about fist fights in the locker room among some of the players. Does anyone have any idea what they were talking about? Did that happen this year or in the past?

God, I hope its this year. Enough ****ing around.

Embree backtracked during his post-practice comments on Monday as well.

where these comments have the potential to really hurt the staff is practice. they may, in fact, only have a handful of reliable guys and maybe just 3 dozen or so that they will play in games. but, you still need to be able to run spirited practices and that means those 50+ guys who aren't athletic enough and who will never play have to stay bought in so that they can push the 30 guys who are going to play on saturdays.

coach made a rookie mistake. he'll need to walk it back with his players. the world isn't going to end. i think embree didn't realize the full magnitude of how sucky our program has become. it is really hard to imagine how far we've fallen, even from the time when he was on the staff for gb.

Embree is an emotional guy. So far he hasn't had much to bring out those good emotions. He's a green head coach and he's going to make some mistakes with the media and players. I'll take his intensity over Slick Rick's Kumbaya, and Hawk's zen mumjo jumbbo.

I think I said this on gameday... but imagine being a buff fan and living in afghanistan (without internet) for the last 6 or so years and then walking into the rubble heap that is CU football last spring. I mean, you hear about trouble, but you keep thinking, it can't be so bad, it can't be so bad... And then you are wading in it, and it is worse than you imagined.

We've all been desensitized over the years with the Missery losses and etc. Embrrito hasn't. How ****ing ****** must that feel?

"It doesn't affect us at all," senior Brian Lockridge said. "He's a straight shooter. ... He's a straightforward coach and like anything else in the world, you would rather have a guy who is straightforward than a guy who beats around the bush. At the same time, he's willing to go the extra mile to get us better and get us into the position that he wants.

I couldn't believe the rant Embree went on after the game. Saturday's outburst was just the tip of the iceberg of over-the-top comments to the media since Spring ball when he was out spouting that he was going to ask some players to leave. Followed by the "positives?" response after Hawaii. His sideline rants during the Wazzu game rivaled only that of Mike Stoops at Arizona.

He (and his staff) looked very amateur on Saturday and this does not reflect positively upon CU. Watching that sideline on Saturday (I sit in 109 on the West side) it looked like a circus. It was clear - there was no leader onthe sideline - that includes players and coaches. How could there be? The head man was ranting around, waving his arms and acting like a position coach. The whole scene really made me think they should have hired Mac with a 3 year plan to turn it over to either Embree or Bienemy.

I want to believe Embree is the guy. However, he really needs to work on his PR skills. Embree is the face of the program now. Not Mac, not the AD, not the SID, not Bienemey. Embree. The world can be burning to the ground behind him, but he needs to keep his cool. That's being a head coach.

This steady dose of vinegar he's been giving is cute for a while, but after two years, it will become very annoying to all involved - recruits, players, their families, the AD, media, alumni and fans. Sometimes a little honey is needed to pull everyone together. They need to circle the wagons. Stick together; shoulder to shoulder. Be Buffs.

Oh agreed. If this goes on for 2 years, I'm gonna be pissed at him. But this year the team NEEDS it. No more beating around the bush. Plus, it does serve to get rid of the guys who aren't buying in.

If you have seen JE coach a practice, you know there is more to him and this staff than ass chewings. Ya, they get on a guy who ****s up... but when somebody does something good, they are right there talking him up. Media meltdowns aside, I'm not worried about this. Now, in two years...

The team might deserve and need Embree's rath right now, but doing it publicly and stewing on the sideline doesn't help recruiting. Momma's don't want their babies to play for that. Hopefully, Mac coaches Embree on this before some of our national TV games.

I don't understand Embree always talking about how the team lacks talent and only has a couple of good players but then turning around and saying that they lack confidence and they have to expect to win rather then just hoping to win. He's giving contradictory messages.

I see what you did there, omitting vital information.

That's the bad side to getting an emotional coach. When things are going great, he can be an inspiration. But if things are going badly, you can get some nasty moments out of him. And those can hurt a team as well and hurt moral. He is going to have to learn to control that anger.

Just want to make sure that I understand this. We complain about five years of Coach Hawkins because he didn't show enough emotion and you couldn't beat a straight, honest answer out of him. Now we complain about Embree because he shows emotion and provides straight, honest answers? Obviously I understand there is a happy median, and hopefully Embree will get there, but for cryin out loud folks, give me a break.

After 4+ of watching DII on the sidelines looking uninterested at best, but mostly dazed and confused, I welcome Embree's rage.

This team spent far too many seasons getting hugs and orange slices.

I agree with the others that said if this is still happening in year 2 & 3 we might have a bigger problem, but right now Embree gets a pass from me.

Does Embree have mentors (other than Mac) in college football? Does he have someone he could go spend sometime with this summer and get some tips about being the head coach? I really do hope so.

When I was a student at Iowa, Bret Bielema was just getting started under Hayden Fry after graduating from Iowa. In those days, Hayden had one guy on the staff that was designated to be over-emotional. That guy was Bielema. Bielema coached special teams then and would go absolutely ape sh!t on every special teams play. If something good or bad happened - he was meeting the troops midway on the field to either congratulate them or set up residence in their earhole until they were on the sideline.

Now, to watch Bret Bielema today, he is as stoic as can be on the UW sideline. A pillar that will not get rattled regardless of the score or what is happening from play to play. He got a lot of help along the way to get to that point. Fry, Ferentz, Snyder and Alvarez.

Obviously, Embree doesn't have the luxury of that type of progression. I hope he has some network out there where he can go and learn or pick up the phone for advice. More importantly, I hope he is open to some counsel.

Here is a link to Bielema's progression: http://thegazette.com/2011/09/29/perception-%E2%80%94-not-facts-%E2%80%94-keeps-wisconsins-bret-bielema-from-earning-respect/

Mike Shanahan and Bill McCartney. Both seem to be pretty successful coaches.

What? Are you gonna cry now? Cry, cry for me crybaby! Cry!

Coaching tactics and demeanor are always brilliant when the team is winning and utterly crappy when they are not. There's no "right" way of doing it.

Embree took responsibility for his own actions in this case and he'll figure out how and what works for him as he moves forward. Anybody who thought we were getting a seasoned and polished HC wasn't really paying attention.

This from the guy that thinks it isn't possible to lack talent and confidence.

Obviously it's possible my point was just that if Embree thinks the team lacks confidence and he's trying to fix that then he probably shouldn't be telling the team and the media everyday about how they lack talent and only have a couple good players. He's sending contradictory messages.

That's a fair criticism but the way I have heard Embree put it is because we're not as big or as fast as some other teams, the players need to understand that they cannot afford to make mistakes. Which isn't quite as contradictory as you make it sound.

The players deserved to be called out. That said, so did the coaches. I love Embree's anger and emotion - I just hope he can translate it into a better product on the field at some point.
