West Virginia to the Big 12?

I read some Big12-2-1-1 AD pimping this move talking about them having better fans and more money to spend on athletics so them being clearly superior to Mizzery. Made me smile, I don't think the big12 gets how tv negotiations are going to work. Trading NU and CU for nothing, then replacing aTm with TCU (huge down grade from a following stand point) and now dropping a team in the St Louis metro for one from Morgan town? No one is going to pay these guys decent money for that sort of a conference.

From ESPN, can you spell leverage:

The Big 12 still wants Missouri to play in the conference next season, as to not open the possibility of television renegotiations if the league were to drop to nine teams. The conference feels comfortable at 10 teams but still will consider 12 teams in the future, the source said.

Looks like Mizzery may leave for next to nothing.

You're ****ing crazy. They have UT. The center of the college football universe.

Sorry about that, got a little carried away, how could I forget they have 2 teams people care about, and 1 huge media market

As opposed to say the SEC, Big1G, Pac-12

They're pretty safe for the time being. The Big 12 has a decent contract with Fox that isn't going to go away, and their contract with ABC/ESPN is up for renewal in a couple years.

They have lost some good media markets with the loss of Denver and St. Louis. West Virginia does help the league get into the Pittsburgh / Washington DC area, which are new markets for them.

Expect the Big 12 to go after Louisville next. That would get them to 11 teams (-aTm, -Mizzou, +TCU, +WVU, +Louisville, +???) with one more team to still be decided. I think Big 12 would really like to add BYU - but I still say that is a logistical / scheduling nightmare.

I cannot imagine too many current Big 12 fans having any interest in a road trip to Morgantown, West Virginia. 1,400+ miles from Austin to Morgantown.

Pittsburgh is 80 miles from Morgantown, I think the tv market will be fairly limited. DC is over 200 miles from Morgantown, extremely negligible tv market. I don't see what West Virginia brings outside of guaranteeing a 10th team to satisfy the current tv deal.

West Virginia is a long frickin way from any conference rivals.

I'd add Cincinnati and Louisville if I was the Big 12.

Makes the most sense, and pretty much destroys the Big East so that the 27 month requirement and exit fees are not an issue.

No way! Bailer will sue. The gold & green bars have more lawyers than a kick return team.

this is a great thing for Oklahoma. If you combine an average OSU, OU and WVU fan you have a full set of teeth.

wvu v. kjuco state: it will be an epic rivalry of toothless cousin ****ing retards. i can't wait to watch it all enfold.

This is a desperate move on WVU's part. Look at their travel schedule. Four trips a year on flights that take about 2.5 hrs, with total travel time over 4 hrs each. And another trip every other year that is almost as bad (to Iowa State). I think this could be the worst travel schedule in the country excepting Hawaii of course.

If I were WVU I would have tried to play match maker between the Little10 and the BigLeast. Combine the two and you'd have 15 teams. Then add Boise and you are good to go. A crappy mish mash of TV markets, but money wise I don't think it would be any worse than what they get right now. They'd be stuck with per team TV revenues below that of P12, ACC, B1G or SEC, but they'd finally be stable. It would also put a lot of pressure on the B1G and P12. By not going for the big solution and instead adding only one team that signals to me that the Texas/Okie Four Stooges cabal is still looking for the exit somewhere down the road (say in 5 years time).

Best move wvu really had. Not ideal. But not bad at all, at least for now. Big 12 is not going to last...then they'll join the sec for the super conference era

Weird potential move, but WVU is desperate and I can't blame them for wanting to get out of the Big East. For the record, there are far more WVU fans in the Pittsburgh market than Pitt fans. Saying WVU opens a presence in the DC market is a major stretch. Sure, they've got their share of alums with the DC metro being a transient area, but it's Terps, Hoos and Hokies that are the most common alums/fans in the area and thus the ones that get the media coverage when they decide to take a break from the Redskins

Whether there are 59 fans or 5,000,000 fans, it is a market not previously exposed to the Big 12. There is some value there.

WVU is also competitive in multiple sports, which will only help the league.

Just think how much love Bob Huggins is going to get when coming back to Manhattan. That will be an entertaining game.

They should love him. He made them relevant in just one year. They've been pretty good ever since, too.

Anybody else think the B12 actually salvaged themselves? Losing NU, CU, aTm and MU has to hurt, but TCU and the hillbillies actually aren't that bad of a replacement....they are at least the athletic equivalent of CU, MU, aTm.

MU > WVU, despite the texas-based Big XII "source". however, most MU fans have claimed over the years that STL is more of a Big Ten market than Big XII. losing STL isn't the end of the world, imo, but WVU for MU isn't a step up for the XII Minus.

^^^^^Well, that may be true. IMO, the B12 qwas never going to lose their BCS AQ wiht UT and OU in the fold, but adding WVU and TCU gives themfive, and sometimes six respectable FB teams (UT, OU, Okie Lite, TT, TCU and WVU).
