Best wishes to the track and field teams tomorrow and Saturday!

If the goal for all of us is to strive for improvement, from the article at the end of last year's championships (http://www.cubuffs.com/news/2016/2/27/210753862.aspx?path=track), "Both the men's and women's teams recorded their highest finish at the MPSF meet. The women's placed fifth with 50 points, while the men were ninth (31)." (Actually- that quote doesn't look quite correct. Official results, and even the stats at the bottom of the article, show the men ended up 10th with 38 points.)

Hope both teams can work off last year and improve in points and final position.
(This might be more likely on the women's side, as they have more returning scorers. The majority of the men's points last year (23 out of 38) were in ONE race, the 3000M, and all those runners were seniors. So, they'll need some up and comers to spur the charge!)

Looks like some VERY good results so far, highlighted by wins in both 5000 Meter races!

A few select tweets-

One more tweet-

Edit- Per the live results, looks like women's pentathlon is actually now finished and Maja Wichhart-Donzo, only a sophomore, finished in 7th place. Congrats to her!
(For the team, 7th place earns 2 points.)

With just a few events left to complete today, I scanned through the live results, and looks like both teams also earned points in the 200 meter sprints-
  • Junior Rajon O'Quinn earned 4 points with her 5th place finish and
  • Sophomore Duane McClurkin Jr. earned a point for finishing 8th.

We seem to be scoring well in a lot of events that we didn't used to do a thing in. Am I off base here, or does the T&F program seem to be rising to a much higher level than it was only a short time ago?

A few tweets from sprints/ multi-events Coach Malone related to her athletes' day 1 results so far-

And, per the below from Coach Malone, the women evidently just won the Distance Medley Relay (DMR)!

Always a/ the highlight race for big running fans during indoor season, I believe the Buffs usually don't even compete in this event. Great to to see the WIN!
(I believe it's a relay race where 4 separate racers run legs of, in order- 1200, 400, 800, and 1600 meters for their team.)

Also, per live results, looks like the men earned 3 points with a 6th place finish in their Distance Medley Relay.

(Looks like the coaches' used the men's race to give some of their young runners some good experience, as 3 of the 4 were freshmen.)

Official results in the women's DMR. (Extra nice/ promising for the future to pick up the win with all freshmen and sophomores running!)

The investment in the new IPF appears to be paying off. It's great to see CU's distance runners dominating the 5K, which shouldn't be a surprise.

The sprints and relay results are what jumps out. As are the number of PR's.

Isiah Oliver is a speedster.

And, not to be left out with the skiing and tennis teams competing, looks like the competition has also started for the track and field teams in the 2nd and final day of the MPSF Championships.

Just eyeballing a couple things, looks like the team has started off a little slower than yesterday-
1) In the 1st heptathlon event of the day, assume Isaiah Oliver must have had a rough race. in his signature event, the 60M hurdles, he only came in 10th out of 14 in points earned. Fellow Buff Andrew Ghizzone did finish 4th in points in this race, so had a better start today. Hope both can finish strong in the last 3 events.

2) In the women's mile, the Buffs don't earn any points, with none of the 3 freshmen representing CU finishing in the top 8 (Oregon had FOUR finishing in points, including the winner, Katie Rainsberger FROM Colorado).
Note- 2 of the 3 Buffs in this race were also part of yesterday's winning DMR relay , so already have made a great contribution this meet. (Wonder if they had time to fully recover?)

So, looks like the Buffs finished with a solid 5th place finish for the women (same as last year), while the men accomplish a MPSF best ever finish of 6th. Now, time for those who qualified for NCAA's to get ready for that, while for the rest of the team members, I assume it's time to prepare to welcome the sun- it's only a couple weeks until OUTDOOR season starts.

Also, congrats to John Dressel- he contributed with another CU individual win!

SEATTLE, WASH. — The University of Colorado track team claimed the men's mile and the men's 3,000 meter titles with Ben Saarel and John Dressel, here Saturday at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships.

TEAM SCORES
The men recorded their highest MPSF finish in school history as they came in sixth overall. The highest previous finish in the MPSF by the men was 10th from last season. The Colorado women tied their highest finish in the MPSF Championships in fifth place. Last season the Buffs finished fifth as well.

QUOTABLE (Head Coach Mark Wetmore)
Both teams were a little higher in team scores than I expected. We were higher in team points and quite a bit higher in our placement than I expected. Overall I am pretty pleased.

We started the day with points in the men's heptathlon, Andrew Ghizzone has always had a great second day and today he moved himself up into seventh place overall. For him, he had a really good hurdles and as usual a good vault and then he won the 1,000 meters to move himself from 13th place to seventh place.

We had some good points in the mile with Ben Saarel adding another victory for us. We swept the distance events on the men's side with the mile, 3,000 and 5,000.

Kaityln Benner was a big point scorer for us in the 3,000 meters, finishing second with a time that will end up in the top six or eight all-time for CU.

Lots of small points which is great to go along with the big distance points adding up to team finishes that I am really happy with. And we added a few people who will go to Nationals so I am overall pretty pleased.
