New ILB Coach: Ross Els

This CA recruiting ties is being overblown. High schools don't put up some moat around their schools and keep college recruiters out unless they have ties to the coaches or programs. Chev, Adams, Hagan and... Mike MacIntyre, have all been recruiting CA for some time. Stop worrying about every assistant having these arbitrary recruiting ties.

Who saw the thread on the rivals main board?

Think about if someone came on here and asked us about Neinas.

Nebraska fans don't seem to be very good people to ask on the subject but who knows. Those teams won 9 games a year, recruited fairly well and they talk about them like the devil.

Solid experience as a coach which is a plus, though he's not coming into a situation with much to work with at ILB.

It sure looks on paper that our offseason coaching changes represent a net downgrade in the recruiting department, so hopefully that turns out not to be the case.

so, we now have @ 25 football coaches, including a 'director quality control -defense'. 1 for every 4 players. that's a bit obscene. what's the teacher/student ratio, 1 for 50? they should privatize the football team and stop pretending it is somehow part of the education business. CU could sell the naming rights to the private company - if Nike doesn't already own them.

18:1 student / faculty ratio at CU. Learn before you speak

Every assistant does not need recruiting ties, but do you really think it would hurt to have more So Cal ties? We are going after the elite players now.

He seems to a nice young man, but what the heck does the 'quality control/defense' guy do, and how many job titles did they rule-out, before picking that beauty?

"Quality Control" is a very common position these days all over the country. I'm not sure what you're asking. They're a level above the Graduate Assistants. They get qualified with the NCAA so that they can recruit (GAs can't recruit away from campus). They assist with the coaching. Generally, it's a position for a younger coach who is working toward getting named as an Assistant Coach. A similar position on a number of well-heeled staffs is "Analyst", which is more likely a veteran coach who isn't an Assistant and focuses on game plans & maybe mentoring the coaches but doesn't recruit. If we could afford it, I'd love to see Bernardi move to Analyst and then either promote Da Prato to Assistant or hire from the outside.

There are not 25 coaches. We have 10 coaches and 3 GAs (allowed 4) that are allowed to do on field coaching. Then we currently have 3 interns, 3 quality control (coaches that can't do on field coaching), 2 recruiting directors, a director of operations, an operations assistant, and two admins.

So like every academic department that has some office staff, and several TA's and RA's in addition to the professors and department chair football actually has some staff beyond just the main coaches.

I didn't say CA recruiting ties were irrelevant, just that they are being overblown. Once the recruiter's in the door and in front of the kid, it's on that recruiter and the staff to keep him interested and close the deal. We will see how the 3 new guys do in that regard.

It takes more to get in the door than just offering though. Either way, the 2018 class will tell a lot.

I can only speak to my limited experience at a very good, albeit limited P5 athlete caliber program, but if a program offers a kid, our HC typically doesn't impede any sort of recruiting contact. Can you elaborate a little more on what you mean?

Bernie, is that you?

In So Cal, Dallas, and Houston, you can be visiting the big time schools and offering several players a week, but so are a lot of schools. Past history at those schools go a long way, it helps to be on a first name basis with the high school coaches. For a school like Colorado which recruits almost entirely out of state, you really have to make the off-campus contact days count. You cannot visit every school in CA and TX (not to mention secondary areas like AZ, HI, and FL), previous contacts help narrow the pool. The contact days are huge because those might be the only time you get to see those players before an official visit.

New Mexico St for 4 years, Ohio for 6 years, Nebraska for 4 years. Purdue's defense improved from 111 to 91 in his one year as DC there. For a team that was a complete mess, that's positive. It's also better than CU's improvement from 2014 to 2015 under Leavitt. Significant P5 experience and coordinator experience. That's good.

Not so fast... Colorado was ranked 114th defensively in 2014 and 85th in 2015 under Jim Leavitt. Purdue went from 111 to 91. Odd comments in bold. How is an improvement of 20 spots better than 29?

Some additional math errors in your response: He was at New Mexico State for 3 years (it just probably felt like 4 years). He was at Ohio for 5 years, not 6. He was a NUB for 3 years, not 4. Fact checkers, ain't that a beatch!

I am on board with the hire. I believe having a DC fill a position spot is a strength and the fact that he can assist with Special Teams and Recruiting is definitely a bonus.

I would not put to much stock into what other fan bases think of coaches who are no longer at that school. What has this fan base said about Jim Leavitt since December? And he was probably the best DC in school history.

Yeah, especially when we now have guys that are connected in Kentucky, South Carolina, and Nebraska. Add them to cover all 5 P5 recruits that Colorado pumps out each year and who needs California or Texas?

You've taken so many Ls the past year about Mac, specific players, recruiting, and the program in general, that I'd just sit this one out if I were you.

Very important position along with analyst. So is Director of Play Personnel. Probably more so. Should not overlook this position/responsibility.

Colleges increasing mimicking pros regarding staff structure
