NEW Sling TV A La Carte TV

https://www.sling.com/?cvosrc=DRTV....paign=DO_LW_DR_ACQ_001000000T_SEP2016_DTCRO30

Don't know if this is some kind of re-launch. Orange plan is single stream while blue plan is multiple stream. Pac-12 Network is on BOTH plans.

Curious to see how Playstation Vue, DirecTV Now, and others react.
The weird thing is, they didn't really announce anything new - unless they added more channels as ala carte offerings. The base two packages are the same. I guess the point was to bring up they start as low as $20 when others are trying to make it start at $35 or $40.

Having a hard time understanding exactly what channels are on there. Is Fox News? I don't see it but can't believe it wouldn't be....what about local channels like CBS, NBC, etc? How do those work?

Huh? This is a step backwards, maybe. 3 months ago I signed up for the orange plan which allowed up to 4 streams. The difference between orange and blue was the available channels, e.g. no ESPN on orange. Is the only difference now the number of streams, do both offer the same channels?

How does a DVR situation work? Is there a SLING (tv box) that comes with this that you can use expandable hdd with? Also, how do you stream to multiple rooms or record multiple shows at once? Is there also a multiple tuner product?

I couldn't find it but what is the quality of the stream? HD 5.1? Any 4k content?

I believe its all cloud based DVR that has 50hrs capacity. I also think you can only DVR certain things...I don't know if sports are included in the DVR capability - since I know they restrict DVR capability to certain programming.
.
In related news - youtube recently launched a service that has numerous channels, allowing 3 streams (6 user access), numerous channels (though the Pac12 network is NOT included). They allow unlimited cloud based DVR of all channels (that is stored for 9 months). $35/mo. If they had P12 network, it would be the most attractive, in my opinion.

Well, that and the very limited market availability at the moment.
  • Available only in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and the San Francisco Bay Area

I am hopeful this will lead to an avalanche of local channel availability for ALL of the OTT providers, not just YouTube TV. The fact that NBC Universal announced recently that they will negotiate on a national level for all local affiliates is a great start.

So I tried Sling (to watch a bunch of NCAA games) and it is awful. the quality is mediocre. I could never get the dvr to work on apple tv, I'm still waiting for my call back from their support team, but the absolute worst part is their guide. I works okay on a cell phone, but I just want an old school guide for a bunch of channels that I can skip ahead 12 hours if I need to.

Basically, what consumers want is better pricing and individual choice with all the features we have right now for over $100 a month.

What that means for me, personally, is let me buy a very basic package on a service that provides all my local affiliates & PBS... and then let me pick & choose what I want beyond that without bundling while doing PPV on events outside what I pick.

Yep I'm tired of the ****ing bill for crap I don't even watch. Except they offer discounts I never see on the bill. I don't mean to be upset about this in a bad way but can you please put someone on the phone I can understand?

I'm a Sling subscriber mainly for Pac-12. Most of my other TV watching is done through Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now and Amazon Prime. I agree that the interface could use a lot of work. The picture quality has mostly been rock solid HD for me. Once in awhile it'll drop to SD for a second or two or the audio will get out of sync. I just back out and reload the channel and it fixes it. Also, no 5.1 Dolby Digital sound as of yet. Still, the price is right for me. No going back to overpriced Comcast or Dish.

Try Titan TV for a great TV guide. Works in a web browser at titantv.com and there are iOS and Android apps. You can create custom guides with just the channels you care about. I have mine set up to show Sling and over the air channels.

By the way, cord cutters should check out HDHomeRun for over the air. (I have the Connect version.) You hook an antenna to it and then the box streams HD channels over your local network. Works in conjunction with a great 3rd party Apple TV app called Channels that allows pausing, rewinding and fast forwarding. Channels has a great interface including a traditional grid TV guide. Also has full DVR functionality for a fee. (Requires a NAS or always on computer to store recorded content.) HDHomeRun also works with other apps on other devices. Silicon Dust makes their own apps for a number of platforms. I use their free Mac app occasionally. https://www.silicondust.com/support/downloads/

Quality? Quality is somewhere between god awful and absolutely embarrassingly bad. Any event that has more than 6 people watching freezes, pixelates and goes to probably the equivalent of 50P, its unwatchable. It won't load frequently and force closes often on 100MB. Had problems on windows, android, mac, iPhone, roku and Chromecast. I wanted to love it but it was so frustrating I had to get rid of it. Their customer service sucks and all they ever tell you is "it must be your internet." Seriously, get on Facebook there were TONS of people during the national championship livid about how bad it was. I found myself paying for it and then using the apps from the providers: AMC, ESPN etc.

Hard to tell from a cell phone but the entire game looked like this until I remembered I could use ESPN's stream. It was a blurry mess.

My experience has been just like Tatanka's and not like either of these. I would expect the issue is in fact either the ISP or the in home router.

The only time I have experienced OTT content as bad as you are describing is Netflix about 2-3 times a year around 6-7pm MT when the entire country is trying to use it. Not yet have I had that type of issue with Sling.

Nope, it's Sling. Use the AMC app? Perfect HD. Use sling? Won't load or looks like trash. WatchESPN app? Perfect. Sling? Trash. I have 100mb Comcast and their router, I also have an additional $150 AC router I use because it works better. On my MacBook the app crashes consistently, wifi or wired. The iPhone and android apps work fine for the most part but I'm not watching TV on my phone at home. The Roku works better than my chromecast but it still frequently slows down and loads. The biggest issue is that as soon as I try to send anything to my chromecast, it doesn't want to work. Wifi or hard wired. Sometimes it loads and is fine, sometimes it shows I'm about to cast but nothing loads. It's just been nothing but infuriating and they're customer service has no answers, they just blame you. They blame you and don't even have any technical know how to try and work through what the issue may be. When sling works it's awesome, which is 65-70% of the time. My thought is that they just have incredibly poor apps/internet integration and that trying to send anything to another device is just unstable.

There isn't anything wrong with ISP/router though. I have a 4K OLED and I use YouTube 4K, Netflix 4K, Vue, HBO app and I have ZERO issues. No loading, no buffering, no freezing,no pixelation, nothing.

If it works for you and others, great. It just hasn't been kind to me.

I haven't looked recently, because they don't have cable TV in Greeley yet, but CenturyLink had a basic package @ $35 that included the P12

Sounds a whole lot like my occasional Netflix issues that are isolated to just that one platform.
