Mismanaged clock at end of first half

why do we continue to give gift opportunities at the end of the 1st half? Last night, CSU has 4th down at our 40 with less than 40 sec to go and the clock running. We let them run it down to 4 sec and run a risk free Hail Mary play. Luckily, we got a QB sack but we didn't have to give them that opportunity. Was I the only one yelling for HCMM to take a timeout with about 15 sec to go? That's enough time that they can't risk an incomplete pass and not enough that they can risk going for it on 4th down and have any time left to score.

This has happened a few times and I'm. It sure why Mac continues to let it happen. Am I missing something here?

That's definitely a good thought, and while I agree, it's tough to think of that in the moment, unless you have a guy in your ear telling you to do it.

Just seems like it's happened a few times. Mac talked during the fall about dedicating some practices on specific "game situations" and I'm wondering why this one hasn't come up since they've seen it before. Would be interesting to hear what his thinking was in that situation.

I mean, I'm just a fan watching the game on TV, but I was hollering to call a time out to prevent exactly what happened. While I'm sure Mac has a lot more to deal with in the game than me, I'm not the one getting paid millions of dollars, either.

With the ball on our side, if they go for it with 40 seconds to go and get a first down, how many more plays do they get? I doubt it's a scenario he and his staff are unprepared for. Or, maybe I'm missing something.

Just spitballin', but if you call the TO the other team has some time to draw something up to get the first down - stopping the clock in their favor.

Could have led to a scoring opportunity right before half, and some momentum for the 2nd half.

After thinking about this some more, maybe he's worried that even with 10-15 sec, they will go for it to try and get a first down which would be a higher percentage play, that could lead to a FG opportunity. Because if they fail, they know we will just kneel on the ball anyway if we don't have time to get ourselves in FG range or Hail Mary range.

So maybe letting the clock go is the right move because a Hail Mary is a lower percentage play than a short pass and FG try. Don't know. Just frustrates me to see us give them that opportunity.

Ok, for those of you saying it was the right call because CSU could've designed a play if we called timeout with 30 seconds left, let's remember it was 4th and 23 from the CU 46!

CSU wasn't going to go for it in that situation. Thankfully CSU's o-line bailed us out.

CU wasn't going to try to do anything on offense either way. So you want to open up additional options for what type of play the opponent can run in order to get points before the half? CU was getting the ball to open the 2nd. That situation was all about minimizing risk to get into halftime with a 17-3 lead.
And it worked.

The more I watch the second half, the more frustrated I get. No excuse to not get any points on that defense for an offense that's supposed to be all that.

That's how our coaches felt. About the first half, too. What I have generally heard through the grapevine is that they feel strongly that their plan to keep things very vanilla and be able to rack up points without giving anything away to Washington had no reason not to work other than poor execution by the team on Friday. I get the impression that CU doesn't have a lot of respect for CSU as a legitimate challenge any more as long as the Buffs don't play stupid. tifwiw, but my impression is that film room and practices will not be kind this week.

OL play was meh to poor most of the game. In hindsight, we know some of the reasons but this is supposed to be a no-excuses team. I hope and expect some team leadership to further emerge.

Someone else mentioned that the lambs continued to try 25-30 yard passes. Difficult distance to make a first down? Sure, but that distance seemed to be in their game plan.
