Coaching Staff

I guess I just don't understand the chicken little complex that surrounds CU football fans.

OMG, we have to pay out $10 million dollars to fire our coach!

Umm, it's about $3.5 million a year for 3 years, and it's offset by other earnings.

OMG, some of Jimmy Sexton's clients get Sweetheart deals with no offset clauses!

We have legitimate reporters with inside sources that are telling us there is offset language.

OMG, what if the offset doesn't include the stipulation that the fired coaches have to look for a new job! What then?

JFC, grow a pair of balls and quit inventing things to worry about.

Reliable sources are telling us that the AD has the budget to fire MM if it's deemed necessary. Quit imagining every possible negative and let RG do his damn job.

The offset language is against media jobs or just coaching jobs?

I have to admit if we lose Les Miles to Kansas I'm going to be pretty upset. Rumors have swirled for the last few years that he might be hired at CU and that RG had been in contact. If Kansas grabs Miles I don't see a big name coach on the market that would be better than another year of HCMM. A big hire would help salvage recruits/prevent transfers etc. A small G5 or coordinator hire will set us back 3-4 years if it works out. This has to be a big hire or it probably isn't worth the buy out in my mind.

Jesus dude, settle down. I never said that he didn't have the money to move on, all I said is that it is a ton of money for a program like CU, which it is and that it would have ramifications for the next couple of years for the program, which it would.

This is the original contract that was signed before RG. Did RG add anything in the new contract?
The new contract details are in the Amendment at the end. I only skimmed so I could have missed something, but I didn't see anything about the buyout stuff as it pertains to the extension. Not sure if that has to be part of the Amendment or not. AllBuffs lawyers, make yourselves useful.

Honestly I think the biggest hurdle for RG in getting rid of Mac will be having gone to bat for him throughout the whole Tumpkin episode and Mac’s ensuing extension then trying to dump him a year later. I have faith in RG and this is something ADs have to do, but it’s probably a difficult discussion with administrators.

From Howell's chat:

Can you clarify the buyout situation for us? How much would it cost to fire Mac, say, next Monday vs after the season? Is there offset language? Will $$ prevent RG from making a change?

Howell: No, I don't think money will prevent a change. The buyout is nearly $10 million. I don't believe it's really much different between doing it a week from now as opposed to three weeks from now. However, MacIntyre is also obligated to seek another job. And, if he gets another head coaching job, the money he makes there offsets what CU owes. So, for example, let's say MacIntyre is fired at the end of the year, and he's $9.75 million. But, he gets hired as the head coach at, say, Tulsa, for $1.5 million per year. That's $4.5 million over the next three years, which means CU would owe him about $5.25 million

Just read through it. I didn't see anything in either contract about reducing the payout if new employment is found...

Lol so what scenario do you think he's fired in? Seems like the only one you've kind of left open is if he gets blown out in all 3 remaining games.

7-5 minimum for him to stay. That's what Howell said after the OSU debacle, and he's stuck with it.

Howell today: HCMM is not coming back at 6 and 6.

RG won't have any difficulty with that discussion. He was protecting his employee.

After the Tumpkin situation, MM was the reigning P12 south champ and the AP coach of the year. 2 years later, he will have presided over at least one, maybe 2 losing seasons in a row including a complete collapse after halftime of the homecoming game. **** changes, man.

Macintyre will need to look for further employ. If he is a HC in college or HC/asst in NFL, that contract offsets. TV or college asst does not offset.

$9.75 mm paid out monthly over a few years is fun.

Right now, I would be in for Les Miles. Recruits would not leave him, and staffing options would be solid. His offenses suck for some reason though? Maybe he keeps Roper as OC/QB coach? He does know how to get defenses built up though, which is where CU could make a name for itself.

Roper as an OC under Miles would never score a point. I do not get people's insistence on Roper being anywhere near our offensive gameplan, he's a horrible OC and it's the entire reason he's our QB coach.

Seriously.

Why would a hiring a coordinator set us back 3-4 years?

if 80 year old herm edwards can come out of a 40 year retirement (yes, i am exaggerating) and claim 2 upsets of ranked teams in his first season coaching a middling talented p12 team, i don't see why ANY good hire at CU wouldn't be able to hit the ground running, whether it is a p5 coordinator, a g5 hc, or LES MILES.

Les is too old, IMO. But, if he came here, he would need a rock star OC. He had Gundy at OSU, Jimbo Fisher at LSU. After Jimbo left his offense became hit and miss. Plus, he was always suspect in clock and game management.

RG is a fund raiser, shown to be a decent organizer. Has never hired a coach for a major sport. Mixed reviews on his hires to date, but generally I've liked them.

Les Miles is a moron and washed up.

I’m off, for some reason I thought that all went down last off-season not 2 years ago. Oops.

If Larry Fedora is the offensive coordinator, I'd be on board with this.....but I'm not hearing a lot about him leaving UNC right now, and **** no to Kurt Roper staying on in that capacity. Here's where I'm at on the assistants-Chev is a damn good recruiter, and I'd like to keep him in a role similar to what he had before Lindgren left. Got an open mind on Kwahn Drake and Darian Hagan, but that's about it. Howell also said today he thinks RG would favor a younger guy-Blake Anderson or Littrell?
