Official Bowl Games Thread

The best team won in 2017, I repeat the BEST team won in 2017. If you think UCF was the national champion I have some oceanfront property for you in Boulder. I guess we’ll never know since the game didn’t happen but I can 1,000,000% assure you that UCF had 0% chance to win the CFP last year. No chance. I’m so sick of this discussion, somebody schedule the two for ****s sake. I can’t fathom anyone truthfully believes UCF can beat Bama or Clemson.

ucf would almost certainly get rolled in an expanded 8 team playoff. but, that doesn't mean they shouldn't have a slot.

here's the deal for me... the p5 conference champions all should get an autobid. if you have an undefeated g5 team that rises up like that, then give them a slot too. and, drop in a couple more p5 teams who are deserving and you have a legit playoff.

It's a silly thing to say, "schedule the two", when the games won't happen for 5 or more years due to the nature of scheduling in college football. UCF absolutely could have beaten Clemson last year. That Clemson team had issues for whatever reason despite their talent. For the record, there was no national champion last year, and there never has been, and it doesn't matter what the result would have been because the game didn't get played.

People sure **** on UW for not being physical, what exactly is Georgia's excuse?
They Lost their DC and a couple analysts.

After the media has made excuses for ND, I am tired of the admission standard argument.
It's the truth though. I'd be willing to bet that most of the Big Ten and Pac 12 can't even bother recruiting half the kids that play in the SEC due to academics. I'm a big proponent for setting a minimum academic standard for all FBS schools. I don't think it's some crazy notion to say that certain schools and in large part conferences are playing at a deficit when it comes to academics requirements.

Random question, has there been a single word during the broadcast mentioning MT taking the CU job?

For the record, Alabama won the national championship last year. Look it up. It’s in the record books. For the record.

I'll just tell you, certain conferences aren't going to be in favor of putting conference champs in automatically, and most fans aren't in favor of that either. You go to 8, you take the top 8. No auto bids, no G-5 fliers.

Wouldn't be PAC 12 refs if they didn't call a targeting. That first one was a targeting but probably wouldn't have been called in some other conferences.

Second one taking a shot at a sliding QB is automatic but looks like the guy hit him in the torso.

Ugly ending

P12 putting their stamp on this game. TB in the booth stating under his breath to just drop the puck and end this.

Just curious, not about the **** show officials not knowing what to do. Can you still kick a line drive at someone on an onside kick? If so, ****ing do it, the onside kicks now are garbage.

Maybe, but I don't care. After losing 7 straight I didn't think, well at least we have slightly better academic standards. Football players are part of the marketing department of a university, not the general student body, they should play by different rules. I don't care what the SAT score of our running back was, I care about how often he is in the endzone.

So, we're in agreement that the Pac-12 refs embarrassed the conference yet again?

Not a good look when the officiating analyst on TV is baffled by what you're doing on the field.

I feel like I’m living in some sort of alternate universe when every single bowl game I on ESPN.

I don’t know about the other SEC schools, but Georgia’s admission standards compare pretty favorably with most of the PAC-12 schools, Ave GPA 3.9, SAT 1280. How far below that standard the school is willing to accept for athletes may be different, but at CU I don’t think you can blame poor recruiting on admission standards.

My issue is that the NCAA measures schools on athletes’ “progress toward degree.”. Staying on track toward a degree is much easier in some schools than others because some schools offer less stringent degree programs than others offer. Not to mention the culture in some schools. Can you imagine a professor at ‘bama flunking a star player, for instance? So I don’t think it is a fair measure on the NCAA’s part.

Admissions Requirements:

NCAA Clearinghouse = 4 years of English, 3 Math, 2 Natural/Physical Science, 1 more of either English, Math or Natural/Physical Science, 2 Social Science, 4 more of English, Math, Natural/Physical Science, Social Science, Foreign Language, Comparative Religion or Philosophy
Total Core = 16

University of Colorado = 4 English, 4 Math, 3 Natural/Physical Science, 3 Social Science, 3 Foreign Language (some schools allow 2 w/ 1 Core Elective)
Total Core = 17

University of Alabama = 4 English, 3 Math, 3 Natural/Physical Science, 4 Social Science, 1 Foreign Language, 5 more "Academic" (basically anything other than physical education or vocational)
Total Core = 15 +

When comparing CU and Bama, the details also matter. The additional Math requirement at CU is a level of college prep that is above Algebra I & II or Geometry. With English at CU, many of the schools require 2 years of composition which is an additional requirement. Physical Science at CU (most schools) requires 2 years of lab while the NCAA only requires 1. Foreign Language is a difficult one and cannot be substituted with other subject matter (UGA, for example, allows computer science to substitute).

The big thing, though, which we don't like to talk about, is that these requirements change if a prospective student is determined to have a learning disability. Getting the NCAA to approve an EID is pretty easy, can adjust the initial eligibility requirements, lighten the course load requirements to remain eligible and allows for a lot more academic assistance (such as the the tests being read to the student, among other things). This ESPN article lays out some of those details: LINK. Of note in that piece was the following:

That's where Monk set up camp, working on papers and other assignments with what she estimates were about 65 learning disabled athletes. She tells "Outside the Lines" that more than a third of the football team, and three-quarters of the basketball team, had learning disabilities. FSU spokesman Rob Wilson did not respond to requests by "Outside the Lines" for information on the number of learning disabled athletes who were in the program when Monk left.

By comparison, experts estimate that 5 to 10 percent of the general adult population has a learning disability.

So, when you hear "SEC Style" with academic support, what it means is that about 1/3 of the team is declared to have learning disabilities. It's not so much about the initial minimum admission requirements, though those are a bit easier. The bigger thing is that there are so many EID student-athletes who take their tests in the athletic building with those tests read to them, have their writing assignments tutored (which they can verbally dictate to the tutor), etc. In essence, you don't even need to be able to read in order to pass your college courses and stay eligible.
