Offensive Line

I'll be disappointed if there isn't at least 2 new starters next season, I've little to no belief of improvement with less. The O-line unit cost last years team in so many ways it proved that all of the skilled players on the field cannot offset the deficiencies of a sub O-line to win 6 games.

Without question the number one concern on the entire team. If we get good OL play we’ll be above .500. Average puts us below .500. Last year we were below average. Hope the new coach is a godsend. If I had to guess I would think something close to:

RT: Fillip, Lytle
RG: Sauvao, Lynott
C: Pursell, Jynes
LG: Sherman/Moretti, Tonz
LT: Sherman/Moretti, Vaughn

Depth is going to be tested. Fingers crossed that Moretti can progress more and stay healthy.

Just me, but at this point it’s a coin flip and would largely depend on mobility with the added weight. You need whoever is more athletic of the two at LT I’m guessing... Both have been putting on weight, but Sherman has added a lot.

Prediction. Pursell won’t start by mid-season.
That would be unlikely short of an injury or a grad transfer we don't know about.

As mentioned by someone else Pursell was one of the more consistent linemen we had. He is reasonably athletic for a center. His problems seemed to come when he got pushed by opponents who were bigger and stronger.

That happening this year assumes that he doesn't make normal progress in S&C this off-season. He was very young, a RS Freshman playing P5 football. In most programs due to the physical immaturity he would have been at most a depth chart guy but due to a lack depth he started for us. I fully expect to see him back this season stronger and being able to use his experience to his advantage. Jynes is very raw and despite being bigger is less physically mature than Pursell. Lynott is much better at guard, his time at center didn't impress.

Would people prefer sherman at OT or guard?

Sherman long term would probably be better off at guard. He seems to work well in tight quarters and lacks the ideal height and arm extension for a tackle.

That said for us we need him at tackle. He has better quickness and feet for tackle than the other options. A healthy Moretti (who isn't any taller than Sherman) played tackle in HS but until we see him fully recover from his nerve injury it will be very hard for him to effectively move laterally the way a tackle has to blocking rushers on the edge.

Multiple coaches have stated Purcell is one of the hardest workers on the team. He is very likely to continue improving for next year.

Prediction. Pursell won’t start by mid-season.

The only option to replace Pursell at center would be Lynott; if they feel that Sauvao and the other guards are better than Lynott. No way I can see Jynes, Paige, or Tonz jumping over Pursell on the depth chart there.

Would people prefer sherman at OT or guard?

Due to "replacement cost" value that puts Sherman at Tackle. All other factors excluded he would be a guard or even a center.

We have Lynott, Tonz, Sauvao, Kutsch, Moretti, Ray, and Roddick all factoring in at guard, with only Moretti out of that bunch with any realistic shot of moving to tackle.

The opposite is true at tackle with Sherman, Vaughn, Fillip, Lytle, and walk-on Schutack as our only options right now. You remove Sherman from that equation and that is downright scary.

Just me, but at this point it’s a coin flip and would largely depend on mobility with the added weight. You need whoever is more athletic of the two at LT I’m guessing... Both have been putting on weight, but Sherman has added a lot.

We probably need Moretti to move to tackle in any case. With Haigler gone there is a big hole to fill (not that he was an All-American; but he was at least average). Unless Vaughn and/or Lytle really surprise everyone.

This makes me feel a lot better about the season. OL was gonna have a lot of growing pains with such a tough early schedule.

Now let's find some beef on the DL

Whoa Boys that is HUGE. I think there should be more hooting and hollering and suggestive GIFS and "Welcomes" and all that.

I'll start......Welcome to the BUFFS!!!!!

Hambright changes everything for the 2019 season. Knowing we have a veteran OT who is good enough to start for a Top 25 type team and may have NFL athleticism solidifies things so much.

Hambright, Sherman, Lynott, Sauvao, AnotherGradXfer or Valentin Senn shocks the world.

Not counting on Filip to stay and the other non-frosh OT's are attritionable.

Not necessarily his job here, he is here to play well and hope to impress the NFL, but in addition to filling a huge hole in the line-up this is also a guy who is a veteran coming out of a top quality program with high expectations.

Even if he isn't a vocal leader (have no idea if he is or isn't) hoping he can be a solid influence on our younger guys about what it takes to win at the P5 level, not just play.
