Coach Michalowski is off to an encouraging start as a recruiter.

CU Buffs adding grad transfer offensive lineman

After high school, Hambright played two years at Garden City (Kan.) Community College. As a freshman, he started the first two games at defensive line before moving to offensive tackle. Garden City's defensive coordinator that year was Brian Michalowski, who was officially announced as CU's new outside linebackers coach on Monday.

The connection with Michalowski, who was originally hired by CU last month, played a role in Hambright's decision to transfer to CU, according to a source.

It seems like there are a TON of non-coach members of the staff- way more QC guys than the last staff. Is it possible that MT had a larger assistant pool with which to work but elected to spread it around to a larger staff rather than going with more expensive hires?

I think it's clear that he's decided to spend money on staff size over high dollar assistants. Whether the total pool is more is up for debate or someone to do the math.

If I had been advising HCMT, LC and RG I would have said to build the personnel infrastructure. Whatever the org chart looks like for your blue sky scenario of how CU Football needs to look might be, create that. Then, if the budget only allows that you hire lower cost people who are getting a 2nd chance or a 1st big opportunity with a P5 program, that's what you've got to do. But lock in the job titles so that's in place just waiting for raises & upgrades as revenues increase (and expenses like FHCMM's salary come off the books).

It's a reasonable strategy with some built in risk management since hopefully the additional staff limit the risks presented by the lower level assistants. That said, you will have a higher miss rate on assistants. Get a bit unlucky there and the staff will be overmatched.

For sure. To do this effectively, you also have to be much more willing than FHCMM was with replacing people who aren't starring in their jobs.

And that's another budgetary issue as well. I know we should have the last ex-assistant salary off the books next year, but MT and RG are betting that MM gets a different job next year.

That’s why I like that he went familiar with some of the lower level staff (overall, I wish there was more diversity). He doesn’t have enough time to teach everyone what he wants from them. Some of these guys need to be able to hit the ground running (and help the newbies learn as well).

Not sure this is true? We had an offensive (Da Prato), defensive (Taye), and ST (Thompson) QC last year too. There seems to be more recruiting staff and the added S&C guy was a nice addition but I don't see that affecting his assistant pool.

Hmm- I thought I had heard there were 2 other QC guys but I may be thinking of the recruiting assistants. It’s my impression though that the support staff is larger. I could be wrong.

That sounds like a good plan, but do you know if that is what we are doing?
Are we actually adding support staff positions, either for analysts, recruiting or academics? So far I have just seen new guys replacing old guys, not adding any new positions.

Not sure. I know that changing and expanding the organization was the main thing that Kirby did at UGA. I'd assume that HCMT learned from that.

Anybody have any info on Helm? Haven't been able to find anything.

Looks like it was a double typo and his name is actually @ReedHeim
Howell - Heim comes to CU from Tulsa, where he worked last season as the director of high school relations and recruiting. Prior to Tulsa, he spent the 2017 season at Richardson (Texas) High School and four seasons (2013-16) as defensive coordinator at Division III Hendrix College.
A 2000 graduate of Austin College in Texas, where he was an all-conference linebacker, Heim has also worked as a graduate assistant at SMU and Baylor and spent four years (2003-06) as a defensive assistant at Virginia Military Institute.

Bryan Cook is a head scratcher, given he's been on the Offensive side for years.
Peagler has been with Johnson for a long time now.

seems cool, but coaching interviews don't do much for me. All the stuff he's saying is fine, but it depends on how we're doing when coaches say stuff. He mentioned winning everyday (BEST TUESDAY PRACTICE EVER) and doing the little things well. I sure remember another guy saying similar stuff. It's all good if we win games.

This dude needs to coach his position and recruit like a machine. He can sound like Coach O for all I care if he does those things.
