2019 NCAA Tournament Thread

LOL - that ball obviously didn't hit the rim.

I understand why they didn't overturn it, but anti-Duke truthers probably want to re-think their complaining about how lucky Duke was.

Edit: that wasn't a direct response to you, Luke
One angle looked like it did. The other didn't. It didn't have much to do with luck, imo. Duke made plays when they had to, I thought they were done.

That missed dunk was the key to the game. It was a 5 point swing, UCF could have salted that thing away...
That or the blatant charge by Zion that was not called, yet it was 2 minutes earlier. But what would the NCAA, CBS and ESPN do if Zion was out of the tournament???

Virginia Tech advances to the Sweet 16 for the first time since the field had >=64 teams. And the Hokies beat two private, religious-based schools to get there.

Life is good.

Now to make it three in a row over private, religious-based schools.

Thanks for pushing CU hoops further down the list for P5 schools with the longest Sweet 16 drought. TCU, Nebraska, who has never won a tournament game, and Northwestern, who has never made the Sweet 16....there might be a few others but there can't be many. Sigh

In all seriousness congrats to VT.

I've had the best opening weekend I've ever had, by far. I still have Ruckus breathing down my neck, though. Dude's about to hit 15 of the Sweet Sixteen.

Here's a question about Oregon and Irvine:

Both teams are double digit seeds, but are also West Coast teams who got to play in San Jose against higher seeds from the Midwest.

How was that rewarding Kansas State and Wisconsin for earning better seeds than their opponents?

Ducks are ****ting the bed. They went 9 minutes without a score. Then just hit two straight 3’s.

I don't believe the committee considers location for 4 or 5 seeds. Looks like they start to relax that principal for 2 seeds in favor of other bracketing principles.

Procedures for Placing the Teams into the Bracket
1. The committee will place the four No. 1 seeds in each of the four regions, thus determining the Final Four semifinals pairings (overall 1 vs. 4; 2 vs. 3). The overall No. 1 seed has the opportunity to select its preferred first- and second-round site and preferred region.
2. The committee will then place the No. 2 seeds in each region in true seed list order. The committee may relax the principle of keeping teams as close to their area of natural interest for seeding teams on the No. 2 line to avoid, for example, the overall No. 5 seed being sent to the same region as the overall No. 1 seed. The committee will not compromise the principle of keeping teams from the same conference in separate regions.
3. The committee will then place the No. 3 seeds in each region in true seed list order.
4. The committee will then place the No. 4 seeds in each region in true seed list order.
5. After the top four seed lines have been assigned, the committee will review the relative strengths of the regions by adding the “true seed” numbers in each region to determine if any severe numerical imbalance exists. Generally, no more than five points should separate the lowest and highest total.

That's all well and good, but it's still weird to me that the "reward" for two Midwestern teams is to play in the South Region against West Coast teams on the West Coast.

I don't really have a dog in the fight, and it maybe helped the Pac-12 have at least one team in the Sweet Sixteen, but to me, if they're doing these weird ass schedules where South region games are played in California, you could have a little more sensible seeding than that.

You're looking at it too simplistically. It's not just whether you're a 4 or 5 seed or not, but also how you're ranked against other 4 and 5 seeds. There are also only 3 locations where 4 or 5 seeds play.

The selection committee ranked 4 seeds as follows:
13. Kansas - Salt Lake City
14. Florida State - Hartford
15. Kansas State - San Jose
16. Virginia Tech. - San Jose

The selection committee ranked 5 seeds as follows:
17. Marquette - Hartford
18. Auburn - Salt Lake City
19. Wisconsin - San Jose
20. Mississippi State - San Jose

You can argue seeding, but I think they do the best they can with the locations allocated to them.

I'm wondering if teams are gonna play Duke like UCF did? I don't know if many can, really. North Carolina, Kentucky, and a few others can pack the paint and make them try to beat you hitting outside. Jones is a midrange or at the bucket scorer. O'Connell might become a very important player for them to cut the nets down. If they can have anyone semi consistent outside, I don't know what you do? Barrett and Zion can both get to the cup when they want to, for the most part. It's kinda weird even talking about this with Duke, they usually aren't short on players that can shoot.

No one else has a 7'6" guy in the middle to disrupt things. No one else has a coach who knows Duke's systems and Coach K's tendencies like Dawkins.

If Duke loses, it's going to take a team like Texas Tech that can play incredible defense and then needs a night they're hot from 3 while Duke is off.

I agree I think UCF was probably one of the more challenging match ups this Duke team has faced. I still can't get over how watching DeLaurier (6'9" 235 lbs) guard Fall looked like Askia trying to guard Josh Scott. That being said I don't think Duke is invincible and it wouldn't surprise me if Virginia Tech gives them a run for their money. On a positive note the lack of exciting upsets makes for a bunch of must see games to look forward to.

I think Duke will lose, if they don't have someone start knocking down shots. They hit some big ones, in that game. Teams are flat daring them to shoot outside. If someone catches some fire, good luck.

Having Zion Williamson healthy will cover up many of their flaws. Maybe even all the way to the finals. He’s that ridiculously good.

Zion is so good we don't even talk about RJ Barrett, who is likely the 2nd or 3d pick in the draft this year. RJ's an incredible player.

I was at a taproom yesterday where there were some Duke fans talking about the game, and they said "I think the real secret weapon is RJ Barrett" in the context of a Zion discussion. I thought, "Really? A Naismith National Prep POY and Gatorade POY, 5 star recruit, and likely top 3 pick in the next draft is a secret weapon?"

Must be nice I guess.

No word on whether one of the guys was Rich Kurtzman .

Yes. Barrett and Reddish are also both likely high 1st round picks. The drop from those 3 is pretty steep. That’s not a common Duke thing, though.

When I see all that Zion can do, especially his passing, it’s a crazy level.
