Official Spring Practices Thread

I think it will be serviceable if Auburn transfer J. Johnson makes it here as planned. That gives you Johnson and Sami at the NT, an established playmaker (Mustafa) at one end, and a solid developing talent (Lang) on the other side. Not sure we won’t be playing more 4 man fronts, though.

Depth is definitely the issue. A few injuries and things on the Dline could become bad in a hurry.

Reinforcements should help a lot in the front seven. Depth will be an issue, but I think it can be serviceable as you said. We at least have known answers at several positions there.

The secondary just seems like a big unknown. If Chris Miller cannot stay healthy (which is a reasonable concern right now), who is going to see the bulk of work at outside corner? Who are the starting safeties?

Agree. I have Abrams’ and Miller penciled in as the starters. With a healthy Miller, that’s a decent combo. Without Miller, i guess Udoffia or Wigley are the next men up?

I think Hypolite will be the strong safety (3 defensive snaps in 2018 I believe). True frosh Perry at free. That’s just scary experience, though. I’ve been following Colorado football for 30 years and can’t recall a single time a true freshman started at safety. You don’t see it often for a reason.

Not spring practice related, but loved this

I have to say, I believe the reference that the not-to-be-spoken-or-seen-ever-again colored uniforms were in use from 85-87 is incorrect. I was an undergraduate in the early 80s and they played with them nearly every damn, nauseating time. They teased the black jerseys maybe once or twice in that span for nostalgia before realizing...“huh, people actually like these”.

Can't disagree with that. We can't afford many, if any, injuries up front. If that happens with an unproven back end, trouble definitely lurks.

I expect that Mehki Blackmon is in the hunt. He played well at the end of last year after they burned his redshirt.

He will make Miller earn it.

And at safety, I continue to hear good things about Isaiah Lewis. Except on this board, where he has not shown well on s few clips. But my understanding is that at practice, he's a playmaker and assignment correct. So I won't count him out

Blackmon is getting work at nickel.

Lewis gets a lot of work during practices and then never actually plays. Maybe that changes this year, but I doubt it.

Safety is going to be an inexperienced guy in a new defense regardless of who it is, so I don’t see a reason why Perry isn’t a legit option. Also think Udoffia and Hypolite will seriously factor in

That tweet is incorrect. They ditched the Blue in 1985. IIRC, they wore the blue uniforms from 80-84.
They ditched most of the blue. They still had the awful blue stripes on the arms until '87 or '88.

Hypolite is a likely starter IMO. Udoffia can be a decent depth piece, but if he is starting... yikes.

I think Howell and Adam mentioned Isiah Lewis in their last practice video as someone to look out for.

Point is, though, the secondary is a big question mark. If youre a Buff fan, the DBs are the position group that keeps you up at night.

Well, I had been hearing he's a threat at CB. Perhaps also getting some work at NB, but I'd be surprised if he wasn't working at CB

Certainly we can't afford injuries, but there are a few more players to consider as well...

Don't forget Janaz Jordan will also join in the fall as a true junior. He is 6'4 305 and can play at any of the three spots. Dante Sparaco has also bulked up and despite being a walk-on is talented enough to help out the three deep this year at rush DE after Lang and Finau. At the other DE spot and at DT/NT, one or two of the true freshmen could easily factor in as a backup/rotational player. In fact it wouldn't be bad thing to help spread the class out some. Alot of the transfers and incoming frosh DL are very versatile and will really help the multiple looks we will run.

Doesn’t Dante have to sit a year?

Good Points.

The numbers might be there come fall for the front three, but it will not be a deep group this year. Need the starters to hold up like 2016.
