Who is attending the Spring Scrimmage (game) on April 27?

Mekhi Blackmon looks like a good quick slot cornerback. He should play in the fall.

I do not think we are showing ANY of our actual offense right now!!! Not seeing the normal Jay Johnson type of calls. This is as Vanilla as it gets, which is understood.
Agree on both points. Mekhi Blackmon played very well. Well enough to be in the conversation for at minimum being in the rotation, if not starting outright. I may have missed it but I did not see a single play with the QB under center. All shotgun.

I think we ran about 5 plays all day in different formats. I bet we did not run any of the actual Fall offense, or maybe 10%. No under center, no fly motion, which is a staple of Johnson. Just lead Tailback, outside fly patterns and a couple crossing routes. Same play over and over. Does show how individual talent is, especially Mangham and Arias. "WIN YOUR INDIVIDUAL BATTLES" is what Coach Tucker said, and Mangham, Arias, Landmann, and even Mekhi Blackmon won their individual battles, which is what every guy needs to do. Montez was unfocused, leaning back, throwing backyard footballs???

I think the offense in game 1 will look very different then what we saw today. Tucker played it very vanilla, he will not show his hand. However, with a vanilla O today does not speak well for Montez. He should have killed it today.

Agreed, but how does Tucker view that? Different coach, different processes, Tucker said all positions are open for competition. I believe thats true.
Good point. This is only 1 of 15 practices. Plus fall camp means way more. I’m sure this performance is in MT memory backs. Still SM job to lose IMO.

I agree, Tucker still brings up the 1 bad monday practice when interviewed about spring ball. He obviously doesn't accept poor practices, execution, and effort. The part of SM that bothered me today was his poor footwork, bad mechanics. Today looks like he regressed. Throwing off his back foot, not stepping up into the pocket, when he knows he can't get hit! the backups took a step forward.

I agree Montez looked bad, but I was close enough to hear him and Jay Johnson talking. Sounds like a lot of the completely missed throws were guys running the wrong routes. He also got banged up a bit trying to get in the way on that trick play that was picked, not sure how much that affected him.

My take from the scrimmage:

Montez played like three-day-old flat soda. Just throwing without conviction and expecting the receivers to do the rest it seemed. Then again it did appear some receivers just missed the route

Both defenses showed up. Then the gold team offense kicked it into over drive. Noyer was solid, Arias and Mangham(sp) really showed some promise.

Stanley and Brown were the ones getting the black team offense across the stream. Nixon only seemed to do something once.

Landman was Landman, I’m glad to see that Taylor was looking good in his new role. Udoffia seemed to do good things. not to mention that JVD, M Blackmon and Wells May make some noise this year.

I think things are going to be WIDE OPEN come this summer. There is three months or so until summer camp starts!

Mangham looked like the clear #1 RB. I think we'll get more from the backups than we got from Kyle Evans and Bisherat. Probably Fontenot #2, then Smith, Davis, Broussard.

Noyer was the MVP. Disappointing to see Montez still throwing off his back foot and into double coverage as a senior.

Tony Brown is a solid player, but I'm still surprised he's ahead of Arias. Maurice Bell showed some things. Fantastic depth at WR.

As others have noted, that looked very much like last year's offensive scheme other than a couple of throws to the TE. Surprising after the talk of having the QB under center a third of the time and running some two TE sets. I guess they didn't want to show anything to the Rams.

I’ve never taken a kid or gone to the field before today. But all the players were so welcoming and friendly to my nephew. Really great kids out there, i appreciated that. Maurice bell was incredibly humble and Montez was great with kids.

You brought your nephew so the players would be more willing to sign your jersey? Did he get any autographs?
